I think the coolest thing about Denmark is the general equality mindset. I like to see girls approaching boys on bars when they feel like. This is really cool. Southern countries don't have that. :( Thumbs up for Denmark.

I'm American and my dad's side is Danish. I have a "-son" name. This was rather eye-opening. 1) in a wide-open public setting as a bus or even Starbucks, I am very quiet and disinclined to engage w strangers. I've noticed these tendencies in my family as well. 2) growing up we ate tons of licorice for some reason. There was almost always licorice somewhere in our house 3) My dad was an avid cyclist: he biked across a large part of Southwest America in the 1970s. 4) Danish goal setting: I have never been an optimist. We definitely have our feet planted on the ground. When I think re it France and England had tons of Enlightenment philosophers; most of the Danish guys: Kepler, Brahe, later on Niehls Bohr, were scientists. HC Andersen's stories are not happy. We keep our feet pretty well planted on the ground. Sometimes too much so. Also, she speaks excellent English. And I think Denmark tried to sell Greenland to the US at some point but we passed. Is that accurate?
@landersen81733 жыл бұрын
Veeery late with an answer. No, The US wanted to buy Greenland during WW2 but we said no. Did sell the American Virgin Islands though. Used to be the Danish West Indies.

The Jante law goes You're not to think you are anything special. You're not to think you are as good as we are. You're not to think you are smarter than we are. You're not to convince yourself that you are better than we are. You're not to think you know more than we do. You're not to think you are more important than we are. You're not to think you are good at anything. You're not to laugh at us. You're not to think anyone cares about you. You're not to think you can teach us anything. (keep in mind that its not an accentual law)

Kelly Louise Killjoy Nah, it's just about not being an arrogant egotastic type.
@KellyLouiseKilljoy8 жыл бұрын
So if: You think you're special. You think you're just as good as everybody else. You think you're just as smart as many other people. You think you're just as good as many other people. You think you know just as much as many other people. You think you're just as important as other people. You think you're good at something. You think people care about you. You think you can teach someone something. - then you're an arrogant egotastic type? No. That is healthy self-confidence and self-esteem - and arrogance does not come with a healthy self-confidence and self-esteem. Arrogance comes with the exact opposite.
@DanishCamp8 жыл бұрын
Kelly Louise Killjoy Of course you should believe in yourself and have all those things, but the original idea with the Jante Law derives from Hybris and ancient philosophy. You can bend those to think that people should listen to you cause you: know better than them how to do things, people should always care about you when you walk into the room, you think you are best at something even though there's always someone better, just because you think you are important you feel you can interrupt an important person speaking, just because you are good doesn't mean that you're better than others, just because you are smart it doesn't mean you are smarter than any others, you think you are special and therefore feel like you deserve a special treatment better than others. This is the true nature of it - it is about being humble. If you're feeling threatened by the Jante Law that's simply because you feel hit and can't take criticism. Stories of how you shouldn't be a boaster is present in all cultures and I personally think it's a good philosophy.

Cameron A. Unless you're brave as hell you meet them in places where you would naturally find a common talking point. Like if you're in a class together, if you're at a nightclub, if you have common friends, if there's something common to talk about. Whatever you do, do not let your intentions be known, even if you're asking for a phone number, telling that it's a date or that your interested in a relationship makes it awkward and make them run away with their tail between their legs. I admit it shouldn't be this way but sadly it is. If you've openly said that you want a person they'll loose interest in you. But Danish dating aren't easy. Good luck :p

It's is true about the cold beer. However we also drink lukewarm beer, varm beer, stale beer, even beer way beyond expirantion. I don't believe our happiness is as much about low expectation, as it is about a sense of security and safety. University tuition is paid by tax, as is healthcare. So you can get an education and a heart transplant without being tens of thousands of euros in debt, which does put a smile on your face. Kelly is right about complete strangers in public though, I always assume they want to sell me something. I believe this is a unique Danish and American trait. I just recently got back from a 6 month stint in New Zealand, and even on the streets of Auckland-NZ's largest city, total strangers will stop you to ask how you are. They do this in Australia aswell, but in New Zealand they actually wait for an answer! So strange but also quite refreshing :)

People not crossing the red light when there's no one around (e.g. 4:00 in the morning) is a stereotype of Canada too. Because Canadians are so polite and obedient.

Yet another video from a Dane that points toward a lack of aspirations among the people being a main reason for what they consider happiness. So far this is universal in the almost a dozen vids I've seen so far.

Yeah, as danish we eat oat flakes for breakfast, rye bread(using a sourdough and seeds) with sliced/pasted meat toppings for lunch, and for dinner depending on who it is some mix of potato, rice or pasta with pork, chicken or beef. We have a lot of bakeries so bread is also common at breakfast, lunch and dinner. We also love hotdogs, Germany our neighbor is constantly making sausages so us being part of that culture is not weird. I love Remoulade which is basically blended piccalilli(a relish of chopped pickled vegetables and spices) with mayo

We have remoulade in the states, though it's not that common. It's superb on fried calamari.

By the way. The reasons for people in Denmark in particular, and in Scandinavian generally, to have an elevated level of happiness, has been scientifically studied. One article, starts the conclusion like this: "It is clear that the welfare state is positively related to happiness. But it is not all welfare states but a particular kind of welfare state that is most conducive to the subjective well-being of citizens: the universal welfare state. This welfare state, however, seems to be connected to two other important social features: the level of social trust and degree of corruption. One can say that, empirically, countries tend to cluster so that countries with large and mostly universal welfare-state programs also have low levels of corruption, a high degree of social trust, and high levels of happiness and social well-being." rothstein.dinstudio.se/files/Social_Resarch_Happiness__Welfare_State.pdf

In Poland people eat potatos almost everyday too. And one of our cities is facetiously called Potatoland. And once we had one girl from Denmark, we thought "hurray, someone with who we can drink!". Aaaand she was drunk after one shot and one glass of champagne xD

There are always a chance, that completely blond parents can have a child with brown hair, the thing is that if a person is brunette with absolutely black hair he is highly likely not Danish ethnically, the more correct sentence will be non emigrants Danes have bright hair from blond to dark brown

Its so true! My sister and I realised that when we visited Copenhagen. The people hardly jay-walk even when there are no vehicles on the road lol
