Holy shit! This was my iPod! A friend emailed when he saw my name in the video, and that's definitely the music I had on an iPod. Blaster the Rocketman is a dead giveaway. I must have sold this at a garage sale (without the dents) 10 years ago or more. I wonder how it made its way to you. Awesome.

The foam trick is critical. I just helped a friend who thought his 4th Gen Photo was gone (had the sads). Found online that the OG hard drives sometimes just needed a bit of pressure on the hard drive connector because they easily could stop working. Proud to say I was able to crack it open and pop a pice of pelican case foam inside and it instantly started working. Thanks for the inspo, good look with the foam, and thanks for a sort of basic guide here.

What I've noticed is that some "broken" iPods, particularly 4th generation ones and Minis need to be connected to Firewire or and older dock in order to have enough power to charge the battery and spin up the drive, especially if it has sat for a long time.

Funny story: I've been binging DankPods videos for the past 3 days and this is the oldest video I've seen thus far. What I find interesting is watching the evolution of a KZbinrs persona. The first few years they're usually pretty much themselves, and as they experiment, they find that leaning on inflections, accents, or cadence (see Dolan Dark or Chills or whoever) will be more entertaining for viewers. Then I start thinking about the juxtaposition of the on screen persona and when they have to "turn off" and eat dinner with the family. I'd be the nerd to try my hand at it just to document the development process... except I'm not creative enough. Anyway, what I'm trying to say is: Love to see the difference between 2020 DankPods and 2023 Dankpods. Good on ya.

I used these same cheap parts to upgrade my daily 3G a while back. All was well until one day, due to circumstances I won’t get into, it suffered an 8 foot fall onto concrete. It continued working for a minuet before it had a panic attack. Being a student, I didn’t have time to sit down and properly fix it, so in the middle of a math test I used my student ID card to pry it open and found out the whole drive slid out of the socket. TLDR I should have used a bracket of some sort, and yes it worked after plugging in the drive. Had to reseat the battery however and the clock was never accurate after doing that. It would always go fast no matter how often I set it manually.

Fool proof method: Use one of those cheap hard drive adapters, buy a better SDXC to CF adapter (Digigear makes a good one and it's on Amazon for $14.99, MUST THE AN SDXC VERSION), buy a SanDisk 128GB (or lower) MicroSD card that comes with a full size SDXC card adapter (don't format it, just use it straight out of the packaging), assemble everything nicely like shown in this video, reset iPod (Menu + Center) and as soon as the screen goes blank immediately press and hold Menu and Play/Pause to enter disk mode. Then plug into a WINDOWS computer (IDK why it has to be this way, but trust me) with iTunes installed on it from Apple's website (not the Microsoft store), wait a minute and open iTunes and it'll prompt you to restore the iPod, click restore and let the computer do its thing. The iPod may ask to be plugged into a wall charger after restore (the computer's USB port isn't sufficient for some reason), you'll only need to connect it to the wall charger for a second. Then your new flash modded iPod will boot up and you can do your happy dance. You can then continue using it with Windows, if that'd your preferred platform, or plug it into your Mac (my preferred platform) and it will read the iPod no problem, you can re-restore to be Mac formatted with Finder in Catalina or iTunes on older versions of MacOS. I discovered this method through A LOT of trial and error and have flash-modded at least 50 iPods and this is the only method I use now and it works EVERY TIME. I've wasted hours of my life trying to get my Mac to read an iPod that's just been flash-modded but not yet restored, Disk Utility, formatting 100 times with every file type imaginable, and my results were mixed (mostly failures) until I finally figured this method out. Hard Drive adapter to CF for 4th gens: amazon.com/gp/product/B00S6AK592/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 SDXC to CF adapter: amazon.com/gp/product/B00EPMWT1M/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1 MicroSD card and SDXC adapter: amazon.com/gp/product/B015IYWJWO/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 The hard drive to CF adapter will be different depending on what model iPod you're flash modding, but the second two items can be used regardless of the iPod type, as long as it had a 30 pin dock connector at the bottom, so no 1st or 2nd Gens. I know this was a long-winded post, but hopefully it will prevent headaches for others in the future and maybe even DankPods himself! Cheers! Love your content, DP!
