Dan Lok has prob the best WC instruction on here.. so many Sifu do not teach all the details.. and if you are not doing the WC hand tools with the right structure exactly they wont work. Very Good

On the mook jong this is fine, but for fighting a live opponent, especially if they have boxing experience, what they say at the start of the video is not ideal. The bong sao needs to have some variable distance if it is to transition to the tan sao quickly in a single action, trapping off the jab.

Usually when i bong Sao i have side stepped over to their side. It's way to easy at this point to push them, or come through and hit. Train bong Sao always with a shift or step over and you will dominate. Standing still or stepping back or stepping forward with Bong Sao will not get you far. Bong should always be done with a shift or step to the side. Great video!

I have to admit, this was, infact, very helpful. I taught myself years ago by studying James Y. Lee's book on Wing Chun, and through picking up Bruce's movements in his films. But I was executing a couple things a bit wrong; they DID work when I sparred, because I strengthened the muscles that are used, but when I applied the proper technique, I noticed an improvement to the forms efficiency.

Great video ...I am just in the process of learning these moves. I like the way you relate it to a real fight. When I am learning that is what I ask my Sifu alot. How would an opponent attack me ...how do I use the move to attack back etc. You explain it very well and demonstrate it brilliantly. Helping me in my lessons!! Thanks for posting can see it all the way in Canada!!!

I agree what Dan said at the end that even the most simplest things can be not really that all simple, simple is just a word to make it easier and much less troublesome on what you do and put into that one thing your focus or achieving at but its just there so that you still have the strength to do so which is why i love JKD and Wing Chun in terms of how it has affected my life for years and how dedicated i am to see those results that will keep me moving forward eventually

Bong sao (wing of the crane) is a transitional movement. Anyone taught basic wing chun would know, that we use it to move with. It puts you off to the side so you can LOP SAO (grab) it’s not done to look cool either. We use it to switch hands in collecting. It’s also a catastrophic shell like Dan said. No choice? Bong sao. It’s also a block that can throw a KOP JARN or PAI JARN elbows. We have RIGHT SIDE BONG SAO and WRONGSIDE BONG SAO. If you’re southpaw. Your right arm isn’t a good BONG because it leaves you open on the bottom line and from his backhand. Using a LEFT hand BONG on a right hand punch is called RIGHT SIDE BONG. But this is not encouraged. It isn’t a square block. Use it as a HELPING HAND.

Thumbs up again. With bon sau I like to feel like I am unscrewing a light bulb, the intent and force goes forward, not up. Your shoulder and lat muscle, powers it and keeps your body in sync. Good point about angle, just like with tan sau, if too little it collapses, too extended and you lose the protection and also risk joint injury. Also we were taught to keep the arm about level with our shoulder so there is good structure behind it rather than just trying to ‘muscle’ it. The bon lap da drill seems to help train reflexes and response. I like at 5:40 you talk about a startle reflex, bon sau and wu sau, as a good quick defense, then attack. This also helps with a side or blind attack. As far as a straight attack I prefer a man sau, biu or pak sau, but if you are surprised at close range a turning bon sau can help deflect the strike, as long as your body turns with it. One more thought I had is that when a lot of pressure hits the bon sau you can fold around it and elbow strike attacker as you pivot (like at 9:23 area) or hit with hand as you show, ‘go with the flow.’ :)

I like your vids! I have my take on bong sao. The way you do it and its maybe the right traditional way but if you look closely, the hand, fingers and wrist is weak and easy to break when it get hit in a fight. I believe in bong sao the way boxers do the peek a boo defence and deflect and attack. But good...do your thing...good luck.

Going through this playlist again to see if Wing Chun is right for me, and I have two questions. You emphasize precision a lot, and it looks like the margin of error for these techniques is very small. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but I assume that in the unpredictable chaos of a real-world fight the margins of error are already tiny. So the questions are: Would it be better (at least for a beginner like myself) to try to mitigate this by learning techniques that are more forgiving? And, is there an inherent benefit to techniques that require extreme precision that I am unaware of? Thanks in advance, and thank you for sharing your knowledge with everyone. Much respect.
