I'm glad you had fun. I work at a theater, and dealing with the crowds last night was really stressful and tough. Then one girl coming out of the movie to go to the bathroom offered me a friendship bracelet, and even though I'm not really a Taylor fan, on a tough night that actually surprisingly went a long way in making my night when I was in a pretty down place at that point. Sometimes we forget how sometimes a quick, simple gesture of kindness can really make a difference in someone's day

Who’s to say you aren’t the face of a person who would go see the Taylor Swift movie opening night? I went and I’m a 30 year old Black guy who grew up in government housing in New Orleans. Taylor Swift is a great musician who makes really complex songs if you actually listen to the albums. I loved the movie. I also went by myself. However, I’m going again on Sunday with my fiancé and her friend.

Sounds more like they were judging everyone who went to see it, as they were too cool to be part of the popular trend, and was just expecting that he would be like 'hell no' and they would bond over being too cool.

LMAO! She's not a great musician and she does NOT make complex song. Most of her songs have the most basic CGAmF chord progression and one-note melodies. Her lyrics are juvenile and lack wit. It's okay if you enjoy it, but let's not pretend she's Freddie Mercury.

While I’m not a fan of Taylor swift I agree whole heartedly that I hope this starts a trend. Being able to give concerts and live shows a way to reach people who can’t see them due to budget or geographic reasons is great.

That being said it is super problematic that we are living in a time where an *average* person can (with few exceptions) not actually afford to go to a live performance because Ticketmaster is outright evil and the financial model for these kinds of concerts is insane. I’m just shy of 60 now and saw live concerts featuring the biggest music names *in the world* and did not need to mortgage my house or donate an organ to go. In fact I was able to pay for all those concerts without any meaningful financial harm. The fact that we have been reduced to releasing a movie so ‘regular folks’ can see a concert tells you how screwed up the system is.

John Green is a self confessed Taylor Swift fan, so you shouldn’t feel out of place. I agree entirely that there should be more live experiences filmed. I have a little collection of live musical theatre DVDs and have had great fun introducing family and friends to them. They really can capture a bit of the live magic.

Dwayne Johnson too, he lip sync "Shake It Off" in the very first episode of Lip Sync Battle aswell as did a voice cameo in Taylor Swift's The Man music video. Woody Harrelson even attended one of her concerts with her family. Same goes to Ethan Hawke, Marcus Mumford, Lin Manuel Miranda, Miles Teller, David Harbour, Billy Joel and more. So men being a massive Swiftie doesn't need to be ashamed of themselves

@@BryanCostner Male fans are absolutely not the problem. People who think Taylor Swift is only for teen girls and look down upon this phenomenon are the problem. The tour has generated a multi-billions dollars economy, but because it’s “teen girl bop” it’s not taken seriously. Just like Barbie, Twilight, and rom-coms, etc. Pop culture with a female targeted market is instantly knocked down a peg. 🙄

@@BryanCostnerIt’s sad that we even feel the need to rattle off male fans so other men don’t feel ashamed, isn’t it? Nothing against you of course, just the fact that it’s even necessary. For the most part, girls and women can be fans of any music, movies or games whether it’s targeted at them or not and it’s not a big deal, whereas a lot of guys still feel ashamed to like entertainment geared more toward ladies-and sometimes these things aren’t even necessarily geared toward ladies but it’s just the fact that it features a woman at all!

I went to a 10:25 pm showing last night so it was a little more subdued (there were a few mega fans screaming and singing along). but the most unexpected thing I saw there was in the row in front of us, there were 8 people in the late 50s to mid 60s - not with any young people, at a Taylor Swift concert movie at a 10:25 pm showing! I was stunned. They weren't jumping around or singing out loud but they were there. Taylor has fans of all ages.

As someone who’s been a fan of Taylor for close to 15 years, this feels like the *definitive* Taylor cinematic/film experience. (it’s not the best. That title goes to 2020’s Folklore: Live At Long Pond Studios documentary/concert movie hybrid) The film captures everything that I love about not just Taylor but her fans as well. All the energy, the magic.. yeah, this was my favorite theatrical experience in a LONG time, probably since Avengers: Endgame back in 2019. As for theater employees being negative/judgemental towards you for feeling “out of place”, I just want to say that Taylor Swift fans, while they can absolutely be intense, can also be some of the most kind, welcoming and accepting people (they can also be some of the worst, but every community has its bad apples). Taylor’s music is for everyone. I stand by that, especially as a 29 year old straight white guy

Theater worker here. Many of us are working really hard to give the Swifties and everyone else a good experience this weekend. It's been crazy and yeah, I'd say more guests fit the criteria of being less-fun to deal with than others. But, for the ones who are kind and are really just here to have a good time and be kind to our staff... I think it's awesome. There are bad people and good people in every large crowd that exists, and I TOTALLY understand the frustration a lot of theater workers are dealing with rn because, yeah, a lot of our guests for this have been rude. But to judge you before you even walk into the theater, simply based on your film choice just SCREAMS insecure to me. Everyone should feel welcome.

Big Swifties here. We went with our whole family last night and had a blast! My husband and I are in our late sixties, our son (31) and our daughter and her husband with their 2-and-a-half-year-old son he loves Taylor too and he made it through the whole movie. He loved dancing with everyone, it was the cutest! My daughter and our girlfriends went to the concerts 2 times as well. It was great to experience it from two different places in the Sofi stadium and then get to see her up close in the film. I loved in the film seeing her expressions on her face and you can also hear her voice better as well. There is nothing that compares to hearing live music and fans singing along but the film was special for so many other reasons. We loved all of it and there is no one that compares to her. Songwriting and lyrical genius on top of being the best at keeping her fans entertained and involved with her in a way that makes you feel that you know her personally. It's a gift.

Dan just hit the nail on the head I say this not to brag, but me & my wonderful girlfriend went to the Eras Tour when it came to MetLife Stadium here in New Jersey and I cannot stress what an incredibly fun experience that was. It was full of love, positive and joy of people gathered to share their love of this genuinely great music that means so much so many. Whether you like her music or her public persona or not, you absolutely cannot deny how big of a star she has become for good reason. Her music is catchy, timeless and universally accesible, anybody can enjoy her music and the commercial and critical success and cultural impact of The Eras Tour is proof of that. It was the biggest "you just had to be there" thing I've ever been a part of and I'm glad this is now in theaters so more people who couldn't see it can experience it too and see exactly why Taylor is as big as she is

I love her early albums and watch her music videos, but I was underwhelmed by her as a stage performer- she doesn’t really dance and she basically has a few hand gestures and moves. Her music videos are fun and the stage design is exceptional, but I think I would have enjoyed more if it was just her and her guitar or piano.

@@brianng8350 I guess I can understand because she herself doesn't relatively do a whole lot, but I still believe that even tho she may not dance like Michael Jackson or sing like Freddie Mercury, she more than makes up for it in charisma and stage presence and making sure every single person in the audience, even the ones in the back are having a great time and feel connected but if that's how you feel I'm gonna knock ya cuz Ed Sheeran is just a man & his guitar and the audience at his stadium shows also have a great time

@@sebbyskywalker That is my point - I rather she do an Ed Sheeran kind of concert - just her vocals, lyrics and guitar and/or piano -catering to her strengths like a small private session, but for thousands of people. But I can understand she is drawing out the big crowds and big money and some people are looking for a spectacle even if it is not her strength. The dancers were fun and the stage design is 100% immaculate, but all these is not really her - she is a composer and singer, first.

Concert movies are a great idea. I've been to a BTS one almost 5 years ago, and it was very fun. The crowd was loud, they sang all the songs and did fanchants. Dan is absolutely right: for many fans this is the only way to experience a concert. Some of the girls at my screening were literal children (11-14) and they didn't even know these concerts came out on DVD and Blu-Ray, and even those who knew couldn't easily afford them. More musicians should do this, and I would absolutely kill to see Broadway shows the same way.

The last time i went to a concert movie was Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert back in 2008 which was 15 years ago (yikes, i feel old 😂), i was a huge Hannah Montana fan (still am) at that time and enjoyed Miley's Disney Channel days so i'm definitely looking forward to this after 15 long years not seeing a concert movie in theater, should be exciting 🙌

A group of 14 of us from in their 20’s to me at 74. We pre partied with signature LOVER cocktails, and friendship bracelets in Taylor inspired outfits (My husband wore a “Swifty in Training”.. 😀 We danced, sang, clapped and traded bracelets with others. We all Loved it! Very fun night and a wonderful memory to share!❤

I wonder if this is Taylor's response to Ticketmaster. If they're going to gouge the audience for ungodly sums, she's gonna put on a show for the price of a night at the movies. If that's the case, that's awesome! That's how you show you care about your fans.

She was definitely pissed at ticketmaster and with good reason, they initially told her they could sell the tickets with no major inconvenience, that did not happen so this concert film could be a response to that but also Taylor has always done this with her tours, she filmed her first tour The Fearless Tour, then put out the 1989 World Tour with Apple Music and in 2018 put out the reputation Stadium Tour with Netflix but this is the first time she's releasing in in theaters

When I was a kid working in a movie theater, we would never judge anyone going to see anything. There's enough room for everyone's preferences. Also. Most Broadway shows are actually recorded in the library of Congress. However, it's not for commercial release and you really have to be an academic or researcher to see it.

Awesome that you reviewed this and enjoyed the experience. As much as people could cynically look at this as the rich get richer, I agree that I think it’s great that it provides many more people access to what was a very expensive experience. My wife has mobility issues and going to a huge concert like this would certainly be a difficulty, but going to a filmed version would be much more reasonable in every way.

I went to watch it today, as a pretty big Taylor Swift fan myself, and I had an absolute blast! It actually made me a bit emotional to see you articulate your thoughts on Taylor as an artist so well. She's often villanised in mainstream media, especially in male-dominated conversations, and it makes me so happy that you have been so open to experiencing it, and enjoyed it too!

As a huge concert fan, I have greatly enjoyed when concerts are recorded and edited into a production. Not every artist can muster the money for that, but a couple I enjoy have. Some even have VR concert experiences haha.

Fun facts of the concert: 1. each city and individual night got 2 different unique surprise songs 2. Every night also had different outfits (she had multiple outfits within each album) 3. Taylor added songs onto the setlist depending on the opener as well as replace some songs on the setlist with other songs. 4. The song Marjorie in the evermore set is about her grandmother whom was an opera singer and at the end of the song you can hear a snippet of Marjorie singing. 5. The movie took an hour off of the real show so some performances and transitions into the eras weren’t shown unfortunately. My favorite was the folklore intro where she poetically spoken the song seven with the moon slowly moving down and landing on the folklore cabin 6. After she re-recorded speak now she added long live onto the setlist and played it with the same guitar from her original speak now tour in 2010 (this wasn’t shown in the movie but the song is used for the ending credits because the song is about her love for her fans)

I would like to include that the overall consensus of her fans like folklore and reputation albums the most. Additionally, the albums lover, folklore, evermore, and midnights never had their own tours due to Covid. Her last tour took place in 2018 for Reputation which is available in full on Netflix.

Totally here for the monologue at the beginning. Mainstream artists and their fans will always get hate from people that like to think they’re above what’s popular. Everyone knows that people who are actually cool don’t have to try so hard to be different.

I had a similar experience when I recently went to the Babymetal Dethklok concert in LA. I drove up to the parking attendant to buy my $45 parking pass and she assumed I was looking for the exit to leave because I didn’t look like a typical heavy metal fan even though I had on a Babymetal t-shirt. I like K-pop too even though I’m not their target audience. I’m not Indian but I love Indian movies and music. Wish people didn’t feel the need to classify everyone based on looks, age, etc.

I went with 3 moms and 11 girls age 11 and 12. For one of them, it was her first film in a theater. She is a refugee from Afghanistan. I hope she doesn't expect to get up and dance during her next movie. For parts of the show, the entire stage area between the front row and the screen was filled with dancing kids. That was my favorite part. I am also a middle aged man who remembers the year 1989. I'm not a Swifty, but I do generally like her music and I enjoyed the show. I like her fights against predatory contracts and monopolistic practices more. But she's also a very good prolific songwriter and an amazing producer.

I’m so happy you’ve had a great experience at the cinema with it (sans the employees who were completely out of line). As to recorded performances, National Theatre in UK films and distributes A LOT of their shows, or shows around West end. It did pop into Charts a couple of times for limited release, the Prima Facie release with Jodie Comer was a big one, and Fleabag a few years ago was also HUGE - I was still working at a cinema back then and it sold out all 5 screens it was on, and they were our biggest ones. Then they upload it on streaming or VOD, I discovered a lot of great plays this way. Hopefully more concerts do this as well, I’d love to be able to relieve some of my faves

I went on Thursday, surprise opening night, and the people at the theatre were nice, but also seemed to be bracing for the worst. I overheard one of them say to a customer that they knew it would be busy, but all the swifties were being nice, hopefully that continues. I used to work in theaters (I worked Frozen release 😭) and I'm a stagehand now, so I got to set up a little for TS when she came through my town. I'm also a fan of her music, so it was a really special experience for me to see the movie.

We were able to share our friendship bracelets with a younger fan heading into the theater after us. Turns out it was her birthday and the theater celebrated with her. Haven't felt that kind of positive energy in the theater in a long time. How do we get this kind of community to the next "Award Season" movie?? If nothing else, to save the theater experience

It's so lovely to hear Dan had a great time watching! His enthusiastic description was a joy to watch. And it was nice to learn the audience was so interactive and engaged. ^^ I'm not a fan of TS, so younger me would have (unfortunately) reacted the same way as the theater staff did. But I've been in fandoms for a long while now, and I've learned to accept that people will like what they like, so just let them enjoy what they like. I hope those two will learn the same.

Well, Dan, that was an excellent review. I just saw the Eras Tour movie tonight. I must tell you that if you are not the face of the target audience, I moreso. I am an 83 y.o. retired medical doctor and psychiatrist, only loosely familiar with her catalog, but very impressed with her talent, her hard work, and her genius. I wouldn't say that I became one of the Swifties tonight, but I am going to listen to her music and pay close attention to her career from this point on. I too was a little baffled by the barrage of F-bombs and S-bombs in a PG-13 movie, but I agree with your assessment of how they got away with that. Incidentally, the average age of the audience I was with was probably 11 whereas 78% of her fans are in the 18-34 age range. I was there alone and was the only male present and I enjoyed watching the concert very much.

I'll always think that a HUGE missed opportunity of the pandemic era was the decision to not release Hamilton theatrically, and just send it straight to streaming. It would have been so interesting to see how it would have done at the box office - I think it could have competed with what will be huge numbers for the Taylor Swift movie this weekend.
