It is so uplifting watching you two lovely youngsters (to a 70+ year old you are still babes!) making your boat into a lovely home. Happy (most of the time) to roll up your sleeves and work hard to achieve your goals without expecting others to do it for you is commendable. 👏👏 It also warned my heart to see a father passing on his knowledge to a son who happily listens. Fantastic job painting. But one thing I would have done differently is when you use the roller tray to hold your paint wrap it in cling film. Then pour your paint in. When you have finished you can remove the cling film and you trays will be nice and clean and won’t need washing out

I would suggest checking with the manufacturer of the rust convertor, that it's OK to apply primer over it, without keying the surface, and before it's fully cured.

It does advise 24 hours before re coating & we unfortunately only left around 12 or so - will see how it holds up but it's likely we'll re do parts next summer. Good learning curve if anything!

@@DanniandJoe I have found its pretty much impossible to get paint to stick to rust convertors, as when fully cured they are glossy and need to be keyed, and when not fully cured, solvent venting will prevent proper adhesion. From your perspective, if the paint starts to come off, there might well be a need to go back to bare metal again. Hopefully it will not cause any issues, and there will be no need to do it again.

Awesome job guys you should be very proud and £10k saved ‘kerr-flippin-ching’. The boat looks magnificent, love the colour. The effort required was enormous but you didn’t give in and remained cheerful throughout because you have the big picture. Yes that would work! We’re going to make sure the paint doesn’t fall off over winter and look at getting our sign writing. Would love gold letters and red shadowing funnily enough

So much respect to you guys. I feel your pain. I'm 75 now, live near the sea in Cornwall and my water time is now on a kayak. About 30 years ago, in the Midlands, I bought a small 25 foot narrowboat and did what you did... on my own. Difference was I had a house to go back to each evening 😉 Love your vids and your portrayal of showing stuff as it is. Keep up the good work.

Yeah, unless you have a black belt in addressing all of the trouble spots, it is best to leave it to the professionals and make sure you get a written warranty.

A Wagner airless sprayer would have been quick and given a really good finish...Overall you can't complain you've done a good job considering the conditions were less than ideal as well as time being an issue.

When taking off all the paint you’ll inevitability be stripping 95% that’s perfectly solid. You also risk creating a lumpy surface that needs a skim of filler to level the finish. I would have flatted the whole area with a DA sander using wet discs. Then checked everything very closely for rust blisters and taken them out with a grinder and treated for rust. Finally fill and prime.

Not sure if it came across on screen but the amount of rust spots coming through covered almost the same area as the paint itself so not worth the risk of not taking it all of and starting from scratch. It had only been painted a few months before we bought it as a rush job to help sell it and the amount of rust that had came through in that time was crazy.

I did wonder about the recoat times quoted on the Dulux - is it solvent or water based . mammoth task, well done. Never in a month of Sundays would I approach it like you two! I would schedule the roof every 2 years, sides probably 3, decks as appearance dictates, only apply masking when you are about to start painting, and remove while the paint is wet. and at least 24 hours, preferably more between coats. Which would mean I would be forever painting the damn thing!

Yes they’re definitely hindered in the colder weather. It’s solvent. Thank you, ideally we can do the same now, schedule the roof in a couple of years and sides after that etc as definitely less daunting that way!

Great job folks, FYI the dew point is the key to painting steel, you can use an electrical device or a whirling hygrometer to determine the dew point.

Wow! That colour is amazing. I'm not a great fan of green guys but this is fabulous. I hope the white roof works for you too (it does look brilliant), but a lot of boaters, (including myself and hubby) go for cream as when you cruise in sunlight it glares so much. If you drive a nail through the valley in the paint can edge it will allow the paint to drain back into the can. When you put the lid on, it will reseal the can and keep the paint from drying out.
