I love the blending of cultures. A nostalgic irish song played on a tranquil instunment from africa. It really makes me appreciate things when I hear this :)

The kalimba box acts as a "Helmholtz Resonator", and the resonant frequency changes as you cover and uncover the sound hole. There are also sound holes on the back that I cover and uncover with my fingers (you cannot see them), so if the sound has vibrato when you do not see my thumb covering the front hole, it is from the back holes/fingers.

@libertyisbest You are welcome - I was just watching this one last night and enjoying it - pre-thinking where my thumbs would go to play this, instead of PRACTICING - usually I think of recordings as "Oh, I 'm sure I could do better" - but was pleased with the result on this one in spite of the errors, which you might not even detect. -Mark

Chloe - when I have a lot of gigs, I paint my nails with super glue. ALSO, some types of kalimba have rougher tines than others. You may be able to smooth the tines with a dremmel tool. The Kalimba Magic web site has a "How to play kalimba" page, and "Thumb nail Care" is a page off of that one. Good Luck! -Mark

Sharon - this kalimba was probably made in the 1970s, possibly 1960s. I have owned it since 2005. Originally, 5 tines were painted (standard Treble, key of G, low note of B)... but I scraped the paint off and repainted it like an ALTO - with 6 other tines painted, and retuned to put the key note in the bass note.... ie, similar to the one you just ordered... except yours is in C and this one is in Bb.

@soapychowder I am the main person out there who is writing out music for the different kalimbas. I don't sell the 7-note kalimbas you are referring to, so I don't write music for them. HOWEVER, I have written a book for the 8-Note kalimba, and have written a free download for a 6-Note pentatonic kalimba, which you can use if you tune the notes right. IF you go to the KalimbaMagic web site, there is a search window in the upper left corner to help you find these resources. -Mark

If all tines were plain silver, it would be so easy to get lost. The colored tines help me keep my place. For example, the root note - Bb - is located on the longest tine (right between two red tines in the center), an octave up on the red tine in the middle of the left, and two octaves up on the far right red tine. Will send you a link to an article on this. -Mark

The Treble goes up to D4, the Alto goes up to G3... so the Treble has 4 notes higher than the Alto. 13 notes are in common. -M

Do the higher notes on the alto not sound as good as on the treble (because of the smaller body)? Or does that not effect the sound of the notes?

Real Question : I have no nails, it work?
@kalimbamagic9 жыл бұрын
toto321456 Nails help you with the "glissando" - ie, dragging your nail over 2, 3, or 4 adjacent tines to make a chord. I estimate 10-20% of kalimba players play with their thumb flesh and not their thumb nails. They get calusses over the course of about a month, which will not be painful. There is another option - Alaska Piks are guitar finger picks made of PVC, and XL size can go on your thumbs, but you need a little bit of nail for the pick to slide under.

@kalimbamagic Thanks, one more quick question, I'm trying to decide between getting a treble or alto hugh tracey. What's the relationship between the octvaves of the two. For example, is the highest note on the alto, the lowest note on the treble? I really like the trebly sound of the treble, can I get some of those high notes from the treble on the alto as well?
@gaiuscassius11 жыл бұрын
There's something truly magical about this instrument. Reminds me magic boxes a lot :). I've been thinking about getting one of those this year. 17 notes is enough to play covers and get a decent expression and character?

Hi I went to go look at the tabs but it has 3 options, Treble, Bb treble and alto. I know I have a 17key Kalimba in the key of C so not sure which one that is
@kalimbamagic5 жыл бұрын
The Bb Treble Tablature will work for your 17 Note in C - the notes at the foot will all be a whole step low, but the positions of the tines will all be the same as for your 17-Note in C.

The wah-wah effect sounds when you're not doing it with your finger over the hole. Were you miming the whole time?
@kalimbamagic10 жыл бұрын
There are two little holes in the back also, and you get the deepest wah wah when you cover and uncover both front and back holes. No, I could never play this song (or any others) exactly the same way twice.
@karli348 жыл бұрын
+Stemma3 In addition to what +kalimbamagic wrote: If you slowly shake the Kalimba left and right while it sounds you will also hear a wah-wah like effekt. In particular when you do it in front of a microphone. The cause is that you change the "running length" of the sound waves from ther origin to the "sensor" (microphone or your own ears, for example). The "running length" of the sound waves become stretched or compressed depending on how you move the Kalimba. This is not unlike a car's engine noise which seems to sound higher while the car is approaching you and lower when the car drives away.
