iirc this was just a duet not a drum off. they're both equally great in their own bands and genres. of course Carey is gonna play better for the most part because he's been drumming longer. Personally i think everyone in this killed it. amazing performance from everyone.

Yeah Bran is not young at all. Mastodon has been around for over 20 years and they were all in good bands before that. Bran most likely has been playing just as long as Danny maybe a few years less but at that point that doesn’t really make a difference. Years have nothing to do with skill. As far as Joey from slipknot he’s just a pudgy little fuck who just does really fast single stroke rolls and double bass. Any drummer who takes it serious can be doing that stuff within three years of playing if they practice. All that said I fucking love Danny and Bran a lot! Somewhat different styles but both masters at what they do!!!!

Every drummer has their own style, Danny is extremely rhythmic/poly-rhythmic, while Brann has simpler grooves yet faster and more complicated fills that he does at a more regular time. Both are good in their own way.

This was really cool to watch. Also, this in no way completely captures the ability of these two masterful drummers. They are both among the best of all time. Before you judge, you need to know both of their bands and how they play IN those bands--their "style" if you will. Those of you who say Brann is "over-playing", you don't understand how he plays then. He LOVES the snare fills. You think he is over the top when really this is his style of playing. Danny likes to lay back much more than Brann does and it shows in this drum off. The drum solos were fairly equal with a slight edge to Danny. However, overall neither one really eclipsed the other. Just a nice little drum off. These two are very much each others equal, and if you think that idea is ludicrous then you obviously only listen to one band and don't know both Mastodon and Tool very well.

I think a big difference is also how they built their style. I think (and IIRC he himself stated) that Brann is heavily influenced by 60s and 70s drummers and a bit of jazz/big band drummers, he uses a lot of ghost notes, fast fills that are focused on just one or two drums, and a more dynamic approach in terms of volume. Danny on the other hand plays in a more modern, metal based approach, and I think his biggest strength is playing around with time signatures and still having enough control and power to make a very heavy back-bone to a thicker more metal-ish sound. Both are nuts in their own regards of course.

No i disagree with you, i loved brann as a drummer until i saw him live. Ive seen mastodon upwards of 10 times live, and everytime its the same. him overplaying to the point where he fucks up constantly not coming back on the one. just like he's doing in this video. he's not even letting Carey get a chance. every 4 measures brann does some dumb ass fill. I would agree with you that danny is a top drummer even though i dont like tool. but i LOVE mastodon and would say brann isn't even in the top 100
@johnttmills
@johnttmills 6 жыл бұрын
Donovan, I totally agree with you. These drummers are both at the "top of their field". However, they play differently. Either one of these drummers "could have" played like the other one. Carey is typically more a-rhythmic and "sensitive" and Dailor is typically more "fill the gaps and drive it home". As a fellow drummer, I love them both.

For all those complaining why Brann is showing off on the snares so much. It's not showing off. It's just what his style of music is. He played very snare heavy. Listen to Mastodon records and you'll automatically know. The Wolf is Loose, I Am Ahab, Hearts Alive, Mother Puncher. Just some examples.

Both of these guys are really accomplished drummers, not sure why people are yelling at eachother trying to compare them. These guys have totally different drumming styles, just like their bands have totally different musical styles. Brann's style is very fill-heavy.. the fills themselves aren't always crazy, but the way he weaves in out and of them is. Danny is more groove oriented, playing off the bass more than the guitar. In shear number of actual drum hits in the same time signature, Brann will always play more, while Danny gives it more space. You can't judge these guys by this one jam...they both did pretty well.

As far as "whose better", I think you can't pick because I've heard both drummers do shit thats just totally mind blowing. In this performance Brann Dailor shines because this is what he does, super fast fills and just kicking ass. Danny Carey's doing some stuff under the surface that you have to listen for. you are one of the luckiest guys on earth. quick question tho, is Danny really into the occult, because every shirt he wears always has some occult symbolism, I see it on his t-shirts, on his drum set, the way his drum set is set up is clearly using sacred geometry, I can see it. referring directly to Alister Crowley and the Hermetic occult. I see it in his pictures, and in his hand symbols.its like hes obsessed, its even on his snare and on his gong, he even has a Enochian board in his concerts. Setting that aside though, he is one of my all time inspirations, its because of Carey I realized that human beings can in fact, be perfect. His dumming is absolutely perfect, so perfect its like magic. and its such an inspiration. which is why I said, you are one of the luckiest guys in the world to be able to work with the greatest musician of all time. What do you do ?

Brann is a drummer. Danny is a percussionist.

Well, Carey, to an observer that looks at intricacies and complexities, is phenomenal. The people in the crowd were probably just looking for showiness, but he became technical and non-linear at one point. He is meticulous and expansive, and has done some very intriguing stuff with his drums throughout his career. Brann Dailor is ferocious and fast. I guess you could say both are proficient (exceptionally). But yeah, Carey really is a true percussionist.

I do believe that Danny Carey took the cake on this contest. Yes, Brann had fast drum fills that sounded very good, but Danny Carey plays to the music, and develops fills that are appropriate to where the music is going, and he also compliments each instrument while doing so.

It seems like Danny is just playing a straight beat through most of it, which really sucks because we all know that he is an absolute machine of a drummer. Seems like he just let Brann go with it for most of it.

yeah i get you, the new albums took so time to grow on me, (crack the skye and the hunter) but now crack the skye is one of my favourite album of theirs, and the new album is pretty great, the hunter is not the best one but i couldnt say its a bad album, i loved various songs on that album, just not as much as blood mountain and leviathan, and remission. but still, i love these guys to death
@kaibrainard7227
@kaibrainard7227 10 жыл бұрын
No, Crack the Skye was good, it was The Hunter and Once More Round The Sun I was talking about. Crack the Skye was really mellow and cool, but The Hunter and OMRTS weren't experimental or interesting at all.
@chrisb5902
@chrisb5902 10 жыл бұрын
I agree Kai but another way to look at it, I think, is that even though Crack the Skye was arguably their most "experimental" album (with Blood Mountain and Leviathan being closer to what you'd identify as prog metal and even just heavy metal in the case of Leviathan) but it was certainly not their best I don't think. I would say Leviathan is their best, though I love them all. I don't think experimenting is the only reason Mastodon is great but you're still 100% right about the newer albums not being experimental.

Danny is the star of the show here, but Brann is such a pleasure to listen to. When i first heard this years ago I felt like Carey held back but Brann was mediocre - years later on I can say Brann was profoundly locked into groove and pocket doing his awesome thing. He hit all the cues musically, exchanged parts seamlessly with Carey. Such a sweet video. Sometimes all you live for is the perfect pop of a well hit snare on the apex of a groove.

Dailor clearly was leading this act. He was spot-on, with all of his fills and amazing speed. I think Danny Carey (and I'm a really big fan of his) is not cut out for these kinda rhythms and styles. His focus was more on the cymbals and trying to play around in a polyrhythmic fashion. Dailor kept a steady beat (as progressive and odd he may be on all of Mastodon's records) and was on the top of the entire things. Even towards the end, Carey was looking at him for the cue to the finish off.

I think that keyboardist used to be in the WWF tag team The Nasty Boyz. I don't know if he is Knobbs or Saggs. Further more Danny is a beast of a drummer no doubt but Brann edges him out in my opinion. Not by much. He is just a more all around great drummer. Danny outside of Tool doing 4/4 normal music wouldn't be anything super special. Brann on the other hand is going off at all times in all time signatures. I can cover Tool songs and most others but the way that Brann plays is very hard to replicate. It is a style unto itself.

I don't play drums, but when i program drums i'm more influenced by Danny's style. The way he pronounces parts is just incredible, very elegant. Brann on the other hand has this kind of devouring gnaw like all the time. Just chewing it up. He's definetely the Bone and Muscle behind Mastodon. Seeing both of them together is pure awesome. For you in the comment section comparing them who's better : There's no better, just different. A good musician can coil back his playing and give the other instruments some room. Ever try improvising with someone, who just won't shut up? It's awful, worst if it's a drummer who can't hold a groove, and really annoying with a guitarist who blares chords and disharmonics non stop. Bass players don't seem to have that problem. I'd really love to jam with Brann and Danny, shit would be awesome. Fav drummer of fav bands !
