First time I'm hearing this. Song is a blast. Holy crap what a picture this song paints, taking you through a fantasy game inning by inning. Feels like the kind of exercise you'd do as a kid at school imagining the wildest game your brain can think of with all kinds of twists and turns and a dramatic finish where your team wins just for your amusement and fantasy. And if you watch enough games of your team, you'll see all of it play out in real life eventually.

In 1962 I was nine. My older sister bought the single and we played this record a thousand times. We lived in the San Fernando Valley and were Dodger fans forever. When I listened to this my lips automatically started moving and singing along. I didn't even think about what the words were! Somethings you just don't forget! And I'm glad the Dodger/Giants rivalry is coming back!

I'm so glad this is here. My father, Herbert Baker, wrote the lyrics with Sylvia Fine, Danny Kaye's wife. The wrote it -- I think -- for the Danny Kaye Show. My dad, a New York native, was a huge Giants fan, but Danny liked the Dodgers.

Thank God for Danny Kaye and the entertainment I watched on tv as a child and the impact another one of his songs from my childhood of the 60's was "Mommy I want a drink of water" but this is and rightfully should be the LOS ANGELES DODGERS THEM FOR AS LONG AS THERE IS A DODGERS BASEBALL TEAM IN DODGER STADIUM !

Wow!! I was a studio singer for nearly 60 years and my first steady gig was in the group of singers on Danny’s TV show. One day we were standing around the piano and Danny broke into singing this. I knew every note of it and chimed in. He loved it

Hi! Thanks for this info about your Dad and these so clever lyrics! Did he tell you what a difficult man Danny Kaye was? I was in the backup vocal group on his show for a few years and he was really nasty. I left that show to spend 6 glorious years on The Dean Martin Show….absolute heaven! Danny was simply a not nice person. He hated what he perceived as people’s weaknesses. He was horrible to Harvey Korman, who got his start on Danny’s show and was very nervous. Danny was plain mean to Harvey, trying to throw him off at every opportunity. I was so happy when Harvey, a genuinely nice person, left Danny and went over to the Burnett show where he totally got to flourish. RIP Harvey! Carol was just lovely. Why do some celebrities insist on being assholes!! Danny wrote the book.

I was a Dodger Fan way back in 1962 and I had that record on a 45. I also met Danny Kaye there at Dodger Stadium. I was almost 16 then. Sadly All of the dodgers mentioned have passed except for Sandy Koufax. And the Giants too (Cepeda passed June 28, 2024). I stopped being a Dodger fan after Sandy Koufax retired in 1966. And I don't like sports much anymore but I am almost 78 and will soon pass. But life goes on as it always has. Be Kind to Animals and try and be kind to the planet.

Wow what a trip down Memory Lane this is! This was out in the early 60s so we’re talking omg nearly 60 years ago! I was just starting out my career as a studio backup singer and was hired for my first steady gig as a member of the vocal group on the weekly Danny Kaye TV Show. One day we were all standing around the piano and Danny had the rehearsal pianist play this and he started singing it. Since I knew every word if it (my family loved it, we’d always sing it on the way to Dodger games) I joined in. Danny was delighted and got me up to sing it with him in front of the audience. I was 19.

The biggest fact and irony is this song was released in 1962 when the Dodgers Faltered and the GIANTS WON THE PENANT! Dodgers were so much more successful in Los Angeles than Brooklyn! The key to the record is the cadence of the names. Not the logic of the game.
@elainechubb9712 жыл бұрын
I agree on the cadence of the names--and the snippets of traditional and popular songs of that era are charming. "Dem Bums, dem Bums, dem dry Bums" cracks me up every time. But in fact the logic of the game is faultless--or at least Kaye narrates what makes baseball sense in men on base, how many outs, etc.
@Maxwell190113 жыл бұрын
One of the highlights of my recent trip to Los Angeles was singing this song word for word with two other guys on the bus back from a Dodgers game when the song played over the public address. @suemcs Actually, in the 3rd (rubber) game of the 62 playoffs the Giants came back with 4 in the top of ninth to win 6-4 and take the series. (I looked it up). According to Wikipedia, admittedly not the most reliable of sources, this song was a hit during that same regular season so the inspiration couldn't have come from that series. . . .unless there's an error there. . . can anyone else remember? I couldn't find a release date for this song. . .Thanks!
@elainechubb9712 жыл бұрын
When I first heard this song--I think on "Baseball's Greatest Hits, a wonderful compilation--I was inspired to look up every name in the Baseball Encyclopedia, and I think 1962 is the only year it could be, given the players on both teams, plus Durocher as third-base coach. Maybe the song inspired the Jints!
@bobbilse12 жыл бұрын
Why would you say that? It was very plausible. Haller was starting catcher and Hiller was the starting second baseman. Miller was often put in to close out victories and hold leads, particularly if Jack Sanford was the starter.

One of the worst trades the Giants ever made was trading Stu Miller away after the 1962 season. In Baltimore in 1963 he saved 37 games, I think, while the Giants died for bullpen help.

Isn't it ironic that this song was requested of a New York radio station by a New Yorker?
@JayBassoon6 жыл бұрын
Maybe not so much when you consider that the Giants and Dodgers were both NY teams not long before the song came out. (Hence Danny's plea: "Come on you Flatbush refugees!" - Flatbush being the section of Brooklyn where Ebbets Field was located.) Admittedly, around 6 decades have passed since then.
@elainechubb9712 жыл бұрын
New York had mourned the relocation of both Dodgers and Giants from the city to California. No true National League fan in NYC would switch allegiance to the d**n Yankees! But 1962--the year this song came out--was also the first year of the Mets (full name: Metropolitan Baseball Club), and at last the Dodger and Giants fans had a team to root for, however bad they were as an expansion made up of the most expendable players the established teams could spare for the draft for the new clubs in NYC and Houston. I became a baseball and Mets fan in the 1980s and older fans still remembered the original teams. I met a woman who was at a game when Jackie Robinson stole home ... And in the 1980s big Frank Howard ws a coach. Oh, and a restaurant I passed on my way to work in Union Square (NYC, not SF) had a huge mural over one wall I could see through the picture window of a World Series game between the Dodgers and Yankees, at Ebbets Field. It showed Gil Hodges in his home run trot between first and second. That was a real game; I looked it up! Whole field laid out, as seen from behind home plate. So you can see theDodgerswere not forgotten.

There is no such city as Brooklyn. Brooklyn became part of the city of New York on January 1, 1898, according to the terms of a new city charter approved by the state government in Albany. According to the rules set in 1876 when the National League was founded, no city was allowed to have more than one team. After 1/1/1898 the Giants and Dodgers were in violation of League rules and continued to be until both teams left for the West Coast after the 1957 season.
