When shooting in log, try increasing the exposure/ISO to deal with noise in darker areas. Depending on the log profile, some cameras benefit from being as much as two stops overexposed which would typically be unacceptable for general photography. It sounds counterintuitive, but many log profiles start at higher ISOs to increase dynamic range, specifically by capturing shadow detail that's often black or too dark to have color information with non-log or lower dynamic range footage. If the shadows are underexposed in a log profile, there's no color detail to work with so if you try to increase shadows or manipulate shadow colors (that weren't captured) you get noise and splotchy colors as seen in your example. In a slightly overexposed image (where the highlights aren't blown out) your shadows will have much more color and detail, giving you more information to grade in post.

what do you in very high dynamic range scenarios, like flying a drone from inside a building into bright sunlight? if i want that transition to be as smooth as possible, do i sacrifice detail in the shadows (lower exposure)?

I watched 3 other videos before yours, and you had the best and cleanest setup/explanation. You say what settings you landed on and why, like setting the max iso to 400. So many people say to lock it at 100 and even with an ND the bright spots can get blown out. Good stuff, thanks!

Agreed! I really think the HDR color profile on the GoPro12 is better than the GP-LOG (especially noticeable in the sky/clouds). HDR just makes thing pop more....only difference would be on Aspect Ratios. Think those could vary from time-to-time depending on your needs. 😎😎 Always interesting seeing what others like to shoot!

On hdr u can only record in 4K when u are in 8:7

As a gopro subscriber i got $100 off, got my hero 12 for $300 + an extra enduro battery with their current promo. Hero 12 def has better battery life than hero 11 but pretty much software update

So, with HDR enabled you can only do 4k @ 8:7 (can still do 5.3k@ 16:9); shutter speed is grayed-out and set to "auto"; you have no control over ISO (the camera sets the range to 100 min, 1600 max) and color only allows "normal" or "vibrant" - Is this acceptable, or would using "standard" instead of HDR and use the manual settings outlined herein? I'm not currently proficient using log files.

I wouldn't recommend a variable nd filter with a wide angle lens like a gopro. It's a combination of two polaizing filters. A polariser can darken a part of the sky so you often end with a dark corner in your image. Easy to fix in a photo, harder in video😅

i have been having a weird problem with my gopro 9 where no matter what it will not let me view upside down. I tried horizon lock, land scape all sorts of combinations.. I just want it to lock to the camera, so if i fly upside down it shows that,, but mine shows right side up no matter what.

that is not why hpllywood uses 24fps. It is because it was the lowest FR that they found they could get away with. And film was expensive so less fps = less film Other than that the advice is solid *Update* i strongly do not recommend recommend auto wb and the fact you use natural picture profile tells me why you think its ok. If you plan on submitting this for a job then the colorist will hate you with a passion cause a changing wb is a nightmare to grade

Why is all of this not about fpv but recorded video played back later ?? Why is it so hard to find information about actually live view fpv ?? I dont care about editing the picture to look good later , I only care about hiw it looks live .. how to transmit it to goggles and make stuff work
