The way MLS is set up on name rights, it's good they never did. Be it, they jump around now, Cosmos still exist with leagues being closed, if they sold over to MLS, if MLS ever closed, so would they more than likely.

I was a season ticket holder for the Timbers 1975 -77 and only gave up seasons tickets because I took a advancement at work and had to work evenings and weekends. I have followed them since day one and they actually did things right. They gained the loved of the city and they are still huge today. Some of the other teams should have followed their model.

@@kramcherryp197 what happened to NASL 2 was teams kept on leaving the league and in this case moving to MLS or USL championship and NASL 2 wanted full rights and responsibility to the league as an independent and wanted full sanctioning from the us soccer federation to compete with MLS division 1 sanctioning while retaining division 2 and NASL got moved to 3rd division while USL championship became the official second division, and NASL only had 4 teams left when they lost 4 , and they were required to have 12, and they were trying to get everything back physically and financially from the us federation and from the MLS with Don Garber and from the USL and also Ricardo Silvas plan to put pro rel on the United States with a media rights deal never worked out, and then Ricardo silvas plan to force it on the us with Dennis Crowley teaming up with him never worked out .

NASL was my first taste of ever seeing soccer as a kid (back in the 70's). There were a lot of dry spells where I couldn't watch any games, but I never lost that love for the game. When MLS picked up the ball I was hooked from the start and never looked back.

You know soccer in America goes as far back as baseball. In the '30's it was on the verge of breaking out. Then the Great Depression hit many of the clubs folded. They were mostly amateur's anyway. Add in competing leagues trying to control the USSF. The American sports fan looked to baseball and American football. The interest in soccer faded until the British invasion of the '60's.

Fun fact. The MLS fan base is so strong and passionate out west is because generational fandoms from the days of the NASL. Teams like the Sounders, the Timbers, the Earthquakes, and the Whitecaps retained their history and thus legacy. Like Brian Schmetzer who's dad played for the NASL Sounders.

My view of the NASL was from the vantage point of the New England Tea Men. They were sponsored by the Lipton Tea Company, wore the Lipton corporate colors of red and yellow, and were coached by two decent ex Manchester United players who had been lucky enough to have survived the plane crash, Noel Cantwell and Dennis Violett. Your report never mentioned them by name, although you did slap up their rather attractive logo once, in the shot of all the league logos, That's probably justified. The squad was mostly journeymen from the English lower leagues. They did manage to beat the Cosmos at least once at their rented digs at the Patriots stadium in Foxboro. Mick Flanagan, from Fulham was their big scoring threat. They played very unmemorable football. moved to Fort Lauderdale, became an indoor team playing at a hockey rink in West Palm Beach. where I saw them play the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. Their Tea Men's crowds were mostly close friends and relatives, and me. Aside from a victory against the Cosmos I can't think of any other accomplishments worth noting. I did get to see Pele, Beckenbauer, Best, Cruyff at less than their top form. I wanted to see the league succeed. I wish someone actually connected to the NASL felt the same way. I also remember seeing Eusebio and Tony Simoes play for the Minutemen at Quincy Memorial Stadium when the Minutemen were a semi-pro team. Sad.

The Tea Men didn't move to Fort Lauderdale...they actually moved to Jacksonville and became the Jacksonville Tea Men....by the way you should have included the effort by NASL to play indoor soccer and try to compete with the Major Indoor Soccer League.....! Even the Cosmos played indoors!!

I am an Englishman ... I am coming up to my 59th year so I remember your N.A.S.L. we in Great Britain had a Saturday Sports programme called World of Sport, within it we had a football feature covering our football league, it was called On The Ball we would get a 5 minute feature on your N.A.S.L. it was looked upon as a figure of fun ... You are right on the reason's for its ending, I remember feeling sad for the football supporting people in North America when it ended. Your M.L.S. has better foundations and its bound to grow and prosper. I was happy to see The World Cup in The U.S. in 1994 and Very Happy to see it across North America again ... Its Great to see The World Game of FOOTBALL establish itself in North America!!!

I agree with your reasons why the NASL tanked; it was a different time for soccer in the United States. However, many forget that the Major Indoor Soccer League helped bring down the NASL. Owners at the time felt that playing indoors with higher scoring and lavish promotions would appeal more to an American audience. When the MISL began in 1978, the NASL quickly created its indoor league. Chicago, Cosmos, San Jose, Minnesota, and San Diego jumped ship from the NASL to the MISL towards the end. Indoor soccer is just a tiny spec on the sports radar today, but that was not the case in 1984.

As a young teen I attended San Jose Earthquakes games around 1974-78. Spartan stadium (SJSU) was packed with around 20K a lot. I saw Best, Pele, Cryuff, Chinalia, Beckenbaugher, The Quake's Americans were Mark and Buzz Demling and maybe the GK. We had Steven David, Paul Childs, Ilia MItic, Johnny Moore, and of course George Best, when he showed up! I think Parviz came from Iran later. Great memories. Now I watch strictly European Soccer. It's soooo much better than MLS.

I was born in 1968 and raised in the Oklahoma City area. In the mid seventies, the only professional soccer available on a week to week basis was a program on PBS called "Soccer Made in Germany", which highlighted games from the Bundesliga. When ABC picked up NASL games in the latter part of the seventies, it was like Christmas for me! I couldn't wait to get home from church to catch Giorgio Chinaglia, Rodney Marsh, Johann Cruyff and the rest of the legendary foreign players who had made their way to the NASL. I was around ten years old at the time...so I didn't really mind that the majority of the teams played on turf. I found shootouts to be incredibly exciting! (although I've since come around on that) Even though the NASL was one of the best things about my childhood, at the very least I'm glad it can be used as a model of what "not to do" as it relates to a league's survival. I wish nothing but complete and utter success for the MLS! (as well as the "beautiful game" in general)

The footage you can see of the "so called Los Angeles Wolves" that was the English football team called Wolverhampton Wanderers playing the "so called Washington Whips" they were the Scottish football team called Aberdeen ... many British teams (as they do now) went over to America in the Summer time (out of our season) as we play August to May to promote The World Game in The States.

The increase in high school soccer was a direct result of the NASL. In Atlanta, the Chiefs required that all players be able to speak English, and also had a good number of players from Africa (Zambia, Ghana, South Africa, etc.). Phil Woosnam mandated that the players did as many clinics and camps as possible, which resulted in in an explosion of high school programs, and more importantly, youth and adult leagues. The same kind of thing happened in Dallas as well, especially after Ron Newman went to the Tornado from the Chiefs.

as a Brit i think your being a bit harsh on the 35 yard line rule....................unlike other yank ideas that suck like bigger goals (not great for goalies at ANY level and Sunday/pub/school league level defenders) and no ties in league games or for two legged cup rounds (3 points for wins 1 pt draws in league and away goals rule in cups sorting that issue out.) i thought it was a good idea and almost all the euro players who went over said it stopped the defenders pushing up the offside traps up so high thus spreading out/giving more space for the midfield players....which is providing there is no goal hanging(which is the whole point of the offside rule to prevent!) can only be a good thing for soccer.... remember this was before the back pass rule,the tackle from behind=foul rule and also when level with 2nd defender was automatic offside instead of onside as case is now. basically i am saying the nasl was trying to make soccer slightly more attacking with one rule which fifa achieved slightly better with 3 rule changes! Also remember back in the 70s most nasl games were on the old style astro turf....not great for entertain soccer its like green concrete! or playing basketball on grass! its just not easy on the body and the bounce is not perfect! unlike modern 3/4g astro which is great for 95% of soccer............. like you said the 35 yard line came in handy for shoot outs...which i see as being no better or worse then pens....problems with pens is 85-90% end up as goals problems with shoot outs is more are saved then scored plus in some instances a goal being legal or not can be hard to rule on when its close to the end of the 5 second time limit... same when it was 6 seconds with mls.................the one american idea soccer definitely needs to bring in at least at pro level is a time in play clock instead of continuous clock to stop all the time wasting...........other then maybe the last day of the epl league season when all games finish at the same time it would be an improvement to have two 35 minute t.i.p half's (then maybe going up to 2 40 half's) which would see a slight increase in goals/play in most matches...and you can still keep the old 90 minutes continuous clock for all amateur games for ease of use/lack of tech for most of the worlds games.

Wierd times. In ‘79, Detroit Express’ coach preferred to run things from up in a pressbox and typically called down his commands to one of his top players like Brian Tinnian. They made the finals in 1982 at least. The Express had to play at the old Pontiac Silverdome with full Detroit Lions football field markings on that oldstyle hard AF astroturf!

The 1986 world cup was originally supposed to be held in Colombia but it was moved to Mexico. If the US bid for that world cup had won, could the NASL have survived and prospered with the exposure?

Hadn’t even considered that. Wish I would have though because that’s a great question. I think it could have prolonged the life of the league, but I think eventually it would still go under. The USMNT really wasn’t great, and I’m not sure they would have escaped the group stages. So the excitement would have still been temporary. And unless the league really made an effort to develop American players, and if they made an effort to find more investors that were willing to stick around long term, I just can’t see them lasting forever.

CONMEBOL doesn't need us, we do a 16 club tournament with 41 countries while they do a 47 club tournament out of 10 countries. They're interested in making the sport is fine and good and giving opportunities to all their nations. CONCACAF is not. Merging both in my opinion would hurt CONMEBOL.

I grew up watching the Sounders in the Kingdome! I was devastated when they folded. I liked the 35 year line offside rule. It opened the midfield. Defenders could not play at midfield, because a fast attacker could get behind them easier without having to worry about being offside. The point system was also interesting. It definitely led to more attacking play. Cosmos definitely killed the league. Other teams really did not stand a chance. It is like MLS teams vs MigaMX teams in CCL play today.

It wasn't that unusual at the time, the Anglo Italian Cup used a similar set up, two points for a win, one point for a draw and one point per goal. Well, they did until 1972 when Blackpool beat Lanrossi Vincenza 10-0 and making the rest of their group meaningless. The French League for a while gave a bonus point for winning a game by 3 or more goals while the Bulgarian League experimented with no points for goalless draws.

Major League Soccer's New York teams, I think, are cursed to never win ANY tournaments because they refuse to use the "Cosmos" name, image, likeness, and history. I call it the "Pele Curse". San Jose and Seattle already have a grassroots "Heritage Cup" for their NASL roots. Portland and Vancouver are waiting for other classic brands to join MLS before partaking in it.

Thank you for finally going off the reservation a little bit. It still felt like one of your videos nonetheless. Here's a couple thoughts: 1. Did you intentionally pronounce Pele's name wrong to upset NASL fanboys b/c that simultaneously feels like something you would do and apologize for. 2. At the end you said you hope the MLS moves past the single-entity model while acknowledging how it's helped MLS survive. Is this signaling at the long awaited video on Pro/Rel? 2B. If we're going to partly blame the Cosmos for the failure of the first NASL and also hope for the end of the single-entity model in MLS don't we need to acknowledge an open system will lead to NY and LA teams becoming super teams like the OG NY Cosmos were trying to in the OG NASL? It seems there's some circular logic us American soccer fans are never willing to acknowledge there.

Sa happy MLS is succeeding, but as someone who has experienced attending both leagues, I can tell you the NASL was far more exciting, and entertaining. shame it didn't last.

Luckily US got the World Cup in 1994 which help made MLS.
