you're right but also you can do what I do in larger recording projects -- record dry and reamp through the reverb pedal which can give a ton of flexibility in post but if it's not a super special reverb sound you can't get from the pedal (like OBNE Dark Light, CBA Mood, etc) just use a plugin. You'll get really close

Great way to go about it. Another way I go about things is to just noodle around with all my pedals until I get bored and take a sick nap.

I commit the effect (any effect) if it is part of and integral to the riff. Like if I have a delay repeat that is playing into my riff (like the Edge, U2) I commit. Or a phaser rate that spins in a way that my riff plays off of it (like Lightning Crashes, Live) I commit. Or if I want the effect to sound pre the amp input, I'll commit.

I went on a long rant about how I always record my modulations because I almost always prefer them before distortion - but it was a bit of a ramble so I cut it. 😂

your b-roll at the very end sounded like you were speaking the language of The Sims haha. Just because of that and because this was the second video in a row I have watched of yours I'm now devoted to your channel and will be following you like a blood hound on the trail of an escaped convict. I will be commenting and liking way more videos from here on out. Toodles.

I was REALLY happy with the tone of that take. It's not as raw sounding as what he played back then but I dug what the Wren and Cuff Tall Font Russian did there.

My solution is a half way of yours, I always record a dry signal and a wet signal with what I think sound good and my vision in my head ... if it sounds like shit, I mix and master the dry signal with plugins. Reamping is a pain for a home studio and an amateur

What I've learned is that guitarist use reverb too much. Most of the times at least. The reverb effects gets becomes somewhat exaggerated in the mix. Most of the times I turn the wet signal down and it sounds way more awesome. All of your sound examples are very wet. Try dialing down to a minimum. Big difference.

I think that when reverb should be used is when reverb becomes almost a different instrument, shoegaze reverb is a perfect use of reverb. Subtle reverb effects I think sounds better as a delay.

I think my feelings on this depends on the situation you're in and the kind of music you're recording. My biggest issue is that I find it especially off putting trying to record some parts dry if I've written them with the effects present and I've also found I've not often needed a reamped clean track cause I'm generally happy with the sound I've gotten from the pedals and it feels like I'd be making sideways moves. That might just be a me thing though. I also think it depends on the standard of the sound/effects that's being recorded in the first place. All in all, essentially I'm just saying it depends on your preference and how you like to work which I think is the thrust of your video too? Interesting topic for sure.

If I’m being entirely honest I feel like a lot of these points carry if you take the onus entirely off the producer to make good decisions in their commits By the time something heads to a mix engineer, the producer mix should be working and if it isn’t, then production probably shouldn’t be done. In the case of small reverbs like springs and small plates, it may never be perfect, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be interesting In the case of big verbs, in all likelihood that’s the voice and the part. I think taking a dry take as a safety is a good call if you’re paying for studio time and need the safety net, but if you’re planning your production process well, the vision should be clear enough that that dry take should rarely be necessary in my opinion

I only record with my reverb pedals when i do a weird ambient pass through the song and then I automate the volume later to make it pop out in the right moments!

The only thing stupid is the title of this video, but at least unlike many clickbait videos it does give the viewer some idea of what the video is about. The smart thing is understanding that there are many ways one can go with recording and finding the path that works best for you and the music that you are recording. I play electric guitar and don't even own a reverb pedal but I do have two nice rack reverbs that I use during mixing, an Eventide 2016 and a Lexicon Reflex. If I played and recorded surf type guitar I would certainly own a Fender tube reverb unit and would use it with an amp and commit to it on the recording but thats not the style of music that I play. I do use overdrive and fuzzes in front of the amp and commit to them without recording an unaffected clean signal as I have no desire to do the re-amping thing. Just realize all of your options and find what works best for you and if you record with effects but aren't confident doing that then consider recording a second dry track as a "just in case" emergency backup plan.

I find it amusing you had to use a 30 year old example considering no one’s given a damn about the rock genre as a whole in the musical mainstream since that example blew his head off 30 years ago. Giving KZbinrs shyt over their sharing on how to record at home is just dumb.
