Space shuttle Enterprise was the first orbiter built however it never went to space since it lacked key components to make it space worthy such as a functional heat shield and engines. There was 6 shuttles they go in order Enterprise OV-101 Columbia OV-102 Challenger OV-99 ( Challenger was originally built as a Structural test article and was later converted to go into space as it was deemed too costly to try to convert Enterprise for space flight plus she lacked most of the systems necessary to go into space as it was . This prompted Nasa to choose Challenger over Enterprise as she far enough along in her test fazes and completeness and was considered easier to convert for space flight over Enterprise. Challenger was also slightly lighter than both Enterprise and Columbia due to advancements in technology and building procedures at the time. ) Then there's Discovery OV-103 Atlantis OV-104 then Endeavor OV-105 Endeavor was built as a replacement for Challenger using Structural spare parts. It was never intended for there to be 6 shuttles as Nasa felt it had it's work cut for them just trying to maintain 4 flight worthy shuttles with the 5th non flight worthy shuttle being Enterprise. So with the addition of Endeavor later on after the Challenger accident this officially brought the total to 6 space shuttles but only 4 of them minus Challenger and later Columbia which reduced the fleet to 3 were actually flight worthy vehicles. Just a tid bit of history for you.

@@rowansanderson3132 The Russians made more than 2 Shuttles. Probably at least as many as the US not even counting the subscale "spaceplane" (around the size of the US lifting bodies) that MiG manufactured and tested. They have one of those spaceplanes at the Russian Air Force Museum around Molina which is a suburb(?) of Moscow. Buran, the flight vehicle, was destroyed by partial collapse of its hangar in the early 2000s. The Germans bought and restored another test vehicle (same general spaceframe design as the Buran that orbited) that flew with jet engines to simulate landing. Its main difference from the Enterprise was that it COULD take off and land on its own power (I think; I'm not sure about the takeoff part). The particular German museum that owns the Buran test vehicle has a lot of Russian hardware in its collection including a surviving Tu-144 posed with a Concorde. It's the only museum where you can see the 2 SST types together. There are still pieces of 2-3 more partially finished Russian shuttles in the old hangar area in the Kosmodrome (?) in Kazakhstan. They're covered in dust and bird poop. They'll never do anything with them. The Russians are even worse at leaving their old junk rotting around the place than we are. I've think the Russian authorities moved most of the launch activities to the eastern part of Russia at another site since they have to license the old launch facilities in Kazakshstan.

This NASA/space line from Bandai Tamashii Nations was criminally underdeveloped. They released only four models (Apollo 11, Space Shuttle Endeavour STS-100, JAXA's Hayabusa probe and Apollo 13) and all of them knock the absolute pants off any space-themed models available elsewhere for commercial sale. The limited run and subsequent rare nature of each of the pieces has also skyrocketed the price over the last 5 years or so, although thankfully looking on Ebay it looks like the price is dropping slightly). If I had my way, I would have expanded the line into several other sets. These would be on my shortlist: - Apollo 7 w. Saturn IB - Skylab - Saturn V first two stages with orbital workshop with a Apollo CSM for the display) - Space Shuttle Columbia STS 1 - always loved the white ET - Space Shuttle Atlantis STS 34 - would come with the awesome IUS booster within the payload bay along with a folded up Galileo probe for display - Space Shuttle Discovery STS-31 - would come with HST - Titan IIIE with Voyager 1 or 2 - Delta IV Heavy (maybe with Parker Solar Probe) - Atlas V (with maybe a mini Perseverance Model with Mars scape or with New Horizons probe) If Bandai even did one of these options ... I got two of these because a buddy of mine I loaned him 1100 dollars and he couldn't pay me back and he had two of these brand new in the box never displayed ever both of them and they are worth alot of money. The boxes was wrapped in a vacuum sealed bags and they are thick plastic bags that you vacuum with a vacuum cleaner ment for storing clothes and stuff in it and so the boxes are mint no dent or ding in the boxes. Any idea on how much they would be worth I know they are probably worth at the least 800 per model. I got one built and displayed in its own case that is sealed and virtually dust proof only dust that can get in is if there was any dust that got on the model while assembly and then that display case is in my larger model display cabinet that is also dust proof. Other one I'm keeping in box and packaging and it has the original plastic wrapper around the box as well and never been taken off. I love the lights on the base in launch setup gives it that iconic look and looks amazing in the case I got it in cause the case has a solid black background and when I light it up it pops and looks beautiful

When naming the space shuttles you always wanna name them from oldest to newest (*COLUMBIA,CHALLENGER,DISCOVERY,ATLANTIS,ENDEAVOUR*) endeavour replaced challenger. They originally wanted to get enterprise and make it space worthy but it was cheaper to just build a new one. Also endeavour is the lightest with Columbia being the heaviest this was important because Columbia was handicapped by her big butt. Endeavour could go a lot further. Columbia couldn’t go to the ISS really because her weight.
@sidv46152 жыл бұрын
post STS-107 Columbia (OV-102) was supposed to go major overhaul to reduce the weight and fly to the ISS for a couple missions atleast since around that timeframe one orbiter (Endeavour) was undergoing major maintenance and NASA couldn’t support ISS missions with just 2 Shuttles (Discovery and Atlantis)

The oldest and most unique of them all, Enterprise the first ever Shuttle built but wasn’t sent to space. She was attached to a boeing 747-SR46 because it was only used for an “air atmostphere” thingy WITHOUT engines. She was also sent to space without any equipment of rockets and the fuel tank by maneuvering the shuttle to space obviously with it’s rocket engines [I don’t know] before coming down to earth landing to the runway without engines. She doesn’t have any landing gear brakes just like all the Shuttles, actually she uses a parachute to slow down [It lands smoothly].
