But some viruses destroy the operating system completely when it's activated. So I don't understand why they only activate on certain date. If they would activate every day then it would be sure that the virus gets the job done. If the virus activates only on 4th of december for an example and the computer isn't used on that day the virus has to wait another year to get a new chance to destroy the OS.

Karpaneen They wouldn't have had any chances to spread. Mostly they spreaded via floppies back then. Immediately destroying the system would not be beneficial to spreading, because you would instantly know, where the virus came from and could get rid of that floppy. If it stays stealthy, you wouldn't notice anything and just work as you normally would, and everytime you give a floppy with an executable to a friend, their PCs would also get infected and so on. Having one PC's data destroyed one year later is still better than never being able to infect more than one PC.
