I'm from 2000s internet, so when I hear "Computer Virus", I always think of some form of malicious program, code, e.t.c that utterly destroys your system from the inside out. It can be super fast, super slow, but the system becomes unusable as that's what I always was taught they could do. It could also be something that just generally makes using the computer an extreme pain as things won't work, random pop ups block your work, all that good stuff. Too bad "Computer Virus" today means some dumb ransomware or Crypto miner. Maaaannn....

it is possible that the reason why the mouse buttons got inverted is the virus is switching the mouse settings from right handed to left handed. You can change the hand orientation in control panel so it will invert the mouse buttons so left handers can use a mouse properly.

That gibberish text is "mojibake" and you can search on that term. On your Windows XP image file get Asian language support installed. I'm pretty sure back then it was called "big5" since that desktop background is traditional Chinese. It says date of death 2003 and something about a demon star coming down,probably a quote from an anime. You install fresh every time from disk without an image? That's got to take forever. Get a laplink and back up a fresh image so you don't have to do this.

This talk about messing with co-worker computers made me remember the time when I was an intern and along with another inter, we learned that the PCs at work had a keyboard shortcut that would rotate the screen. So, when a friend of ours (another intern) was away from her desk, we went and flipped her screen upside down and let the computer sleep. She was already having a rough day, and when she saw the screen upside down she was so over with it that I kinda felt bad while laughing. We immediately showed her how to fix it, but boy, her reaction was gold.

I had a virus at the computers at school which would replace files with shortcuts and hide the original file somewhere else. I don't remember if there was any payload

the one with the anime girl is likely just a dropper or a tiny bundle of joke programs and not an actual variant. not sure though. i once dl'd something similar (that was on the wild not too long ago btw!) on a VM and it just dropped a bunch of fake installers in my documents folder that it attempted to load at the same time

I suggest that you use disk backup programs like wimlib, Acronis True Image, Norton Ghost, or AOMEI Backupper, to backup the entire OS partition so you don't need to install Windows every time a trojan/virus deletes critical files. It could be a lot faster than reinstalling Windows.
