I’m still amazed how everyone fails to mention the Simple food project. Way better food and the only somewhat affordable freeze dried food out there. $152 x month for a 60 pound dog, no other food can match that. also it’s actually part of the Susan Thixton 2023 dog food List! While only 1 of the foods mentioned in this video made it in!

Pretty good food, slightly high on fat and carbohydrates, which I'd mark down for. Your price point is very good. Peoples evaluation criteria is different, but thank you for awareness to this freeze dried raw dog food option.

@@DanScott1 thanks Dan for taking the time to respond. I think you make great videos. Apologies if it was understood otherwise. What I meant to make a point of was that you, as well as other people in different platforms failed to give the viewers an idea of how much this foods actually cost to feed x month out of fear of them being discourage from buying. But I believe if done properly with pros and cons it can actually encourage people to make better decisions for their pets in for their wallets. Personally, I can get behind giving my 60 pound dog 16% carbs for $152 vs 2 to 6% for $475- $760 but everyone is different. I don’t work for The Simple food Project, nor do they pay me to say this! Some herbs and dietary supplements may help you excrete water (diuretic) and help with sodium and water retention. Examples include dandelion, ginger, parsley, hawthorn and juniper. I particularly like dandelion but advise you see a holistic vet to supervise use. How To Find A Holistic Vet If your pet gets a fungal disease like Valley Fever, be sure to seek out a holistic veterinarian who’s familiar with thesefungal infections. That’ll be the best person to help you with natural remedies. You can find a holistic vet at these sites. Many will do phone consults if you can’t find one locally. The Academy of Veterinary Homeopathy (AVH): lists homeopathic vets but manypractice other holistic modalities too. Pitcairn Institute of Veterinary Homeopathy (PIVH): vets who’ve complete homeopathy training with Dr Richard Pitcairn. Like the AVH list, includes vets who practice other holistic methods. 5-6 nuggets daily. Great idea too, well done for transitioning diets. Go slow and small the first week or two so your dogs gut eases into new gut flora for new foods. Can always use a good soil based probiotic to help the transition and then just the nuggets after it's finished. Again, start small at 1/4 dose first few days and build up: amzn.to/3yoURqU

Couple more bits of important information about Small Batch and Steve's Real Food For Dogs: Small Batch adds bacteriophage to their formulas (the frozen raw that I think is the exact same recipe as the freeze dried) and Steve's uses High Pressure Pasteurization (HPP) (for their frozen which I think is the same formula for the freeze dried-- For most companies that offer a frozen raw and a freeze dried raw, the recipe and prep is the same-- The freezer dried version just then goes through the preservation step of freeze drying). Many raw feeders do not like the idea of HPP as it is yet another step of processing that takes the meat another step further from raw. For others, it is the in-between compromise that allows them to feed uncooked meat that has been sterilized. Raw feeding purists argue that the natural bacteria in food/meat is good for a carnivores immune system and GI flora (I'm talking about common bacteria and not pathogenic bacteria) and that sterile food is just downright unnatural and therefore unhealthy longterm. Primal is also HPP. Bacteriophage is bacteria virus. Yes, there are also viruses that infect bacteria and kill bacteria so adding viable phage to raw meat is a way to lower the bacteria load. My concern with adding a lot of phage to raw dog food is that it is then added to the dog's GI tract. No one can imagine that this does not wreak havoc on the GI flora over time. In addition to Small Batch recently changing all of their recipes to included a copper supplement regardless of the fact that their ruminant recipes contain beef or lamb liver which naturally high in copper anyway which I think is very bad (see my comments below) I think it can't be good to feed a food with added bacteriophage. Just something to be aware of when deciding what to feed. Small Batch is a good company in general but I will share that when I queried them recently about their addition of copper their customer service guy gave me a gaslight, unscientific explanation that was unsatisfying. That ended my use of Small Batch.
@DanScott12 ай бұрын
Thank you, yes these changes creep in. I've heard the HPP arguments nand the added copper, all for extra cleanliness but at what cost. At some point I'll have to research any possible data on results of this but I imagine its sparse. Please let me know if you come across any, its appreciated. At some point a video on the suppliers of HPP and copper free raw products next may need making.

Hi Dan, Thanks for making this video. I have been watching several videos on what I should feed my 16 month old black lab. She has been on Wellness Complete Puppy food/kibble for the most part. I was supplementing with Farmer's Dog Chicken recipe which she did not do well on - it gave her loose stool and made her itchy. I then just supplemented with pumpkin and or sweet potato. In any case, she needs to transition off puppy kibble and of course I want the best for her. I am a little confused on the freeze dried foods. Are these meant for her main meal or do you need to supplement with something like a grain. Or are these used mostly used as toppers to a kibble? And if so, is there any kibble that you would recommend? Thanks in advance! Michele
@DanScott111 ай бұрын
In a nutshell Michele, it can be used as a complete meal but your dog is big so maybe cost is an issue. What's needed for dogs is high quality proteins, organs, fats and very low carbs (hence the itch!). I think your better getting my ebook, Feed Your Dog Better as it will help you understand canine nutrition so much more completely and 3 diets to coose from: healthydogforlife.com/feed-your-dog-better-book-by-dan-scott/ As for a low carb kibble, the winner is Ketona (making a video about it coming out soon): healthydogforlife.com/KetonaKibble Nows a great time to feed a more fresh food based diet as the dog is young. And please, No more vaccines, high carbs, vet drugs or medioca pet foods.

It's 25% protein, 15% fat and around 40% carbs, so high in carbs! Reasonably natural additives. Don't be fooled by the raw coating, were talking sprayed on.. it's kibble. All in all, it's ok but high in carbs. I think dogs are better off with low, under 10% carbs, as they are inflammatory to dogs. You could of course go with fully freeze dried foods, here's an example: Bixby Rawbble Freeze Dried Raw chicken - amzn.to/3YH6GVD It's all perfectly fine to feed raw, just transition slowly so your dogs gut gets used to it and add some soil based probiotics from the beginning: amzn.to/3yoURqU and start them small and slow the first week.

Hello Dan, I am so happy to find you. Is it possible to have a consultation with you? I have so many questions to ask you. One of them - I am trying to figure it out which freeze dried raw food or frozen one to feed my French bulldog. I have been making him a homemade natural lean ground beef with organic vegetables and touch of oatmeal for a long time. I add Adored beast health gut probiotics, Liver tonic and Phyto synergy for his allergies. It doesn't seem it helps with allergies but defiantly its great for his gut, his poop is good, coat is good and no vomiting. I just started to add a little of Steve's Real Food freeze dried fish after I watched your video. He loves it. I used to add to his homemade food a cup a day of Primal freeze dried beef pronto, it was a right decision, because his meals were more complete and not lucking any nutrients, but I think it made to lick his paws even more maybe because it has more carbs then his body can handle it, as you mentioned in your video. He is constantly chewing his paws especially in the middle of the night or the first thing in the morning. I do not know what to do anymore. Maybe I should try a new protein, or any supplements? I would appreciate your advise. Thank you. Yelena

I've ventured down the freeze-dried road with my 16 year old mutt. Over the past couple of months, we've been forced into a scramble find food our dog would eat. At the moment we're feeding a conglomeration of senior dry kibble, freeze-dried food and topping it all off with cheapie pouched cat food. We went through lots of combinations, due to our dog just not eating. No matter how high the quality, if he won't eat it, quality doesn't matter. 🤓 Anyway, that brings me to my QUESTION... Do you have any plans for 1. Air-dried food reviews or 2. Air-dried vs Freeze-dried foods?
@DanScott1 Жыл бұрын
No plans at this stage. Air dried food is still using heat while freeze dried is still fully raw. So freeze dried is going to be better nutrition but air dried is better nutrition than kibbles. Oh and canned or pouch food is better than kibble also.

Here's some help for the condition, including arthritis: This is unfortunately, an irreversible condition but you can maintain improved health and a better lifestyle. Maintain a healthy body weight and keep the dog lean. Feed a fresh food protein based diet and leave out carbohydrates. Keep the air the dog lives in clean ie no smoking, air freshners or incense. Gently detox your dog to clear the system and replenish. This is important to de-stress and clean the filtering organs. Use Detox Gold for Dogs: shrsl.com/3uv5t Gentle Detoxification & Elimination Support: Essential detoxification support for dogs: Essential detoxification support for dogs Support for the immune system Supports vital systems of detoxification Helps to reduce oxidative stress Promotes long-term health and vitality Use environmentally friendly cleaning products around the house. Keep the back yard free of pesticides. Use a body harness for walking not a neck lead. Add the following supplements to meals: Glucosamine: amzn.to/3wIWbVl 500mg per 25lbs dog weight. You can also feed some beef trachea: amzn.to/3HI06HC, chicken, duck or turkey feet. A chicken foot is 400mg and 1oz beef trachea about 1400mg glucosmine. Bone broth: amzn.to/38AZ3uX also contains lots of glucosamine. Antioxidants: shrsl.com/3uv18 help slow ageing, boost immune system strength and slow free radical damage, while stopping inflammation. Colostrum: amzn.to/3H79rad Green lipped mussels: amzn.to/3sZnTfN excellent for the arthritis. Freeze dried greens: amzn.to/3cOgzLu Bluberries Quality Omega 3 oil : amzn.to/3vDdtjX is helpful in controlling inflammation (arthritis), hormones and aiding immunity. A good probiotic: amzn.to/3g0mPkE for maintaining better gut flora health. Manuka honey: amzn.to/3GBzc4Peases coughing and soothes the throat plus it's antibiotic and antibacterial and antimicrobile. 1tsp per 20lb dog weight. Try adding some to warm water to drink several times a day. Don't use vet antibiotics, use turmeric: amzn.to/3laPqtc, oregano oil: amzn.to/3ulnF1T, olive leaf: amzn.to/3JLX5sm or fresh garlic. Don't use vet drugs, vaccines, suppressants, steroids or NSAIDs. Feed a mostly fresh food diet.

@DanScott1 Жыл бұрын
Lately there has been some research that says the loric acid in coconut oil is not so healthy for dogs after all. More needs to be done on this, but there you go. So I'm more cautionary on adding coconut oil now. MCT oil made from coconut oil is still a great idea though. If these freeze-dried foods are rehydrated in a crock pot on low until the correct hydration is reached, would the cooking on low destroy the nutrients? Can supplements like green vitality, omega 3, 6 oil, glucosamine/msm be added in?

Yes, plus some fresh foods like eggs, canned sardines, fine chopped part cooked veg which means less kibble. 50:50 is best but reducing kibble 30% and replacing with fresh foods is excellent. And add soil based probiotics: amzn.to/3yoURqU start small and slow to begin with so they get used to it but great for balancing digestion. If there's gastro issues flaring up use L-glutamine powder - amzn.to/34wiNOn 5g = 1tsp in half glass water, add to meals or water bowl or direct, quickly settles gut issues for relief and is safe. You can use it too, I do, plus dogs.

If you could brush a little daily, then neem bark powder is great on the paste as it stops plaque build up, I know, having used it for years myself: amzn.to/2ULzroL Can also rub on with fingers. ie coconut oil on finger, dipped into powder, then rub on. I noticed the bite which was a very odd square? shape swelling, so i wiped it with some salt water and then dabbed it with some cider vinager water mix, it seemed to be going away but it hasn't, although the swelling went down it is now the size of a 10pence and red and feels like a ten pence piece is under the skin? like its still just slightly swollen, i wash is with salt water and put some sudo anticeptic cream on it, I am just wondering what you would do? Hi Dan, Just came across your channel, and I’m really hoping that you gave the answer to my pups issues. Bindi is a special case, having been diagnosed with SARDS in 2019. @@mannyaparicio7139 You could mix them and have two different food options for variation. Then take out 20% of the meal volume and replace with a raw egg or two. Steve's is excellent but be aware that their beef formula freeze dried raw contains approximately 45 mgs copper per kg Dry Matter and their "Lamu" contains 80 mgs copper per kg dry matter. To put that in context, the AAFCO minimum is 7.3 mgs/kg dry matter and recently, veterinary experts wrote AAFCO and begged them to set a maximum copper of twice the minimum. So, if the experts believe that dog food should stay in the 7 to 14 mgs copper per kg DM then going 5 to 11 fold higher is not good if feeding this food daily. Please read up on excess copper in commercial food and how it is hurting dogs and do not use Steve's Lamu and only use their beef formula diluted into homemade food or in rotation with lower copper entrees.

Just want to mention that to help others if they’re considering making the switch. Feeding your dogs “real food” will change your dog’s life for the better if you’ve feeding them kibble. I have a dog with IBD and started feeding raw food, he got constipated with bone so fed him tripe and he went the opposite way with dirrohea and blood. The vets pf course recommended a hydrolised diet. The issue is its put me off raw food following the upset tummy because i was convinced a bone was shredding his bottom and the raw had given him a bacterial infection. Issue for me is where do i go now with his diet? I dont trust Purina and the likes for good reason
@DanScott1 Жыл бұрын
I think you got off on the wrong foot and easily done, done it myself. A dogs gut houses a certain kind of bacteria used to the incoming diet, so when the diet changes, the gut biome has to change but that takes time, hence the IBD. And the older the dog the bigger the change and therefore the slower we must go when transitioning from one diet to another. That's why your dog suffered with constipation/infection, his gut wasn't ready for it. So change slowly over 1 month, adding 25% of new food to old food for a few days, seeing that it's ok, then adding more until one month later the dogs diet is the new food only. Always add this soil based probiotic: amzn.to/3yoURqU but again, start it small ie 1/4 dose size few days, then more and so on, you get it. Raw green tripe is good food for dogs actually, 100% assimilated. I did however give him a worming tablet a couple of days before the dirrohea started and now I am wondering if that was the trigger rather than the food 🤔 Thank you so much for your help, he's currently on a bland diet to settle him and then I have to start all over again 😬
