Used a shield turn 1, then used smart snipe. The main issue with Shield is that it puts a giant blue target on you, and is largely used as a knowledge check for your opponents or simply a stalling mechanic, rather than relying on your own skill. If you were climbing, in a tournament setting that allowed shields, or running through the single player campaign, then it might make sense to use the item. However, when you queue into a lobby with level 100, three star players, who typically wait to ensure you actually want to play before starting the game, and then you use Shield on Turn 1, you aren't being strategic, you are just wasting everyone's time.
