I should have given this shout out, and great thanks, to Dan a couple of months ago but believe in "better late than never." In a comment reply on this thread I asked if I could send photos about a problem I was having with a fan. He graciously agreed and after a few emails Dan got everything working again. I had called customer support several times and they sent free replacement parts but did not tell me what he did, to get my fan working. At the time my area was having 100゚ days, so the fan was important and needed. Dan did not have to share his time so freely but did and I'll always appreciate it. Thanks to him I'll know what to do if the problem happens again. Thanks Dan!

Nice video! I was installing a new fan last week, and inadvertently pinched one of the common wires coming out of the capacitor when installing the light kit to the switch housing. This popped the breaker, and now the fan won't spin (but the lights still work). Could I have damaged the capacitor, or is there a fuse that potentially could have been blown? Looking for an easy way to test this so I know what I need to do to fix it. Thanks!

Recently my SMC ceiling fan quit working. The low and medium speeds do nothing but the high speed only makes motor hum. It's not the capacitor, I've checked it for microfarads but I think it might either be a bad reversing switch or a bad winding in the motor and I need help identifying which wires to test for continuity.

1. What model is it 2. How many wires come from the motor coils? 3. Why not just bypass the reverse switch and see if it works?
@showingvintagefans
@showingvintagefans 6 ай бұрын
It's a model DC42 from 1990 and I believe there's 4 wires, blue and white that goes to the reversing switch, red that goes to a capacitor, then the black wire which is connected to other series of wires that go to the reversing switch. @@dspiffy

Good video. I have a ceiling fan that I replaced the pull chain switch on and it stopped working. I can hear it turn on but it doesn't spin. Any advice? Could hooking the wires up incorrectly cause that?

Your fan is Hunter Augusta Five Minute Fan. It's either bearing issue or capacitor issue, probably capacitor issue. The way to check is to try pushing the blade with your hand and see if it spins freely. If it still takes more than few seconds to stop then it's a capacitor issue. It might only have one capacitor box or two capacitor boxes. and if it has two capacitor boxes, the one with two wires going to the chain switch is the issue. If it's only one capacitor box, then that obviously is an issue. Make sure you replace it with same exact uf capacitance rating and same or higher volt rating.

I have a ceiling fan that when i tried flipping the switch the fan would rotate slowly for a few seconds then stop completely. From here I would try to mess with the reverse switch and see if the rotation would work the other way. None would work. Then the other day i tried it again and heard a slight static buzz then it stopped. Do you think my capacitor might be out? I free spin the fan and it feels fine. I even flip the switch amd felt the fan blades and i feel a slight vibration when the power is turned on. What do you do think my issie would be?

@@dspiffy Thank you for replying so quickly Dan, I was surprised. Can you give me any kind of guess as yo what kind of information you would need? From what I remember, the part was small and not rectangular, What I replaced looked like a pull switch in the video but the fan chain still pulls easily. Whatever it was that I replaced got the lights working again but then the fan wouldn't. It was pretty difficult doing this without taking the fan down by myself and I'm wondering if there's something on the part I put in that did not get connected properly. I just replaced exactly what I took out. You may not be able to reply so quickly this time time but I thank you for whenever you can. I'm sure I can do this if I just know what to do.
