There’s a line in the anime, when he’s hired to kill the devil Bradley, that says it really well for Dante’s character; “sorry sir I can’t complete your request. I can’t fight anything that’s not demon. I don’t see a demon here”. He says this after seeing Bradley concerned about his lovers father and is healing him. He doesn’t see a devil when a devil shows compassion. He sees it as a solely human trait.

Maybe. I remember one of the LN or Manga implying that Dante was and after a fashion still is a death seeker. He's a guy that after his trauma wanted to lie down and die, that's part of his reason for always looking for bigger and badder opponents and his recklessness, but eventually he came to realize that there are other things and other people to love in the world and so he's grown beyond his initial reaction which was the reflection of Vergil's desire to cling to life no matter the consequences and seek power so as to never feel the way he felt then ever again.
@SuperLuis2252 ай бұрын
This was perfectly reflected in an episode of the anime "Not Love" where dante is hired to kill a demon, only to discover this demon has fallen in love with a human. So dante rejects the hit, and protects the demon and his gf while they leave town. You can sort of see it on his face when he realises the situation he's facing, that he relates this to his own heritage

To be honest.. Vergil beats Dante once in DMC 3 (Top of the tower) and once in DMC 5 (right after his revival). Dante beats Vergil twice *as Vergil remembers*, since he forgot the whole Nelo Angelo fights (Portal in DMC 3 and Demon World in DMC 5, battle at the Qliphot was a tie as we see it). Ergo, as far as Vergil remembers its literally 2-2, theyre *even.* But Dante remembers the fights as Nelo Angelo, knowing that hes up in wins.

I love that Dante falls back to his demonic nature due to sheer ignorance of what a "real human" is. What I mean by that, is that you should compare how he acts with how Nero acts. Dante knows (maybe actively, maybe subconsciously) that he's a demon and basically unkillable. Nero on the other hand, while also being demon blooded, grew up as a human. So Nero naturally tries to avoid getting impaled by a giant sword, Dante just goes "here we go again".

Ironically enough, Dante's humanity (and even Vergil's, to some extent) is also responsible for their flaws. Whereas Vergil's fear and jealously led to him wanting more power, Dante's obsession with Vergil blinded him. He was convinced killing Vergil was the ONLY solution, only for Nero to prove him wrong. There's no doubt in my mind Dante intentionally overplayed his injury after Nero bitch-slapped him. At this point, he realized his error and realized Nero was the only one who could end this battle and REACH Vergil. I got very emotional when Dante chose to stay by Vergil's side at the end of DMC5, BTW. It's the ultimate resolution for BOTH characters. Because of Nero, Dante no longer has to leave Vergil behind (which was the source of Vergil's fear/anger). Vergil also changes - he no longer pushes Dante away. Hell, the man smiles when he tells Dante they got all the time in the world together now. Personally, I'm excited by this change of events. I want to see how their relationship unfolds from that point on. If Dante's motivation to fight comes from family-related ties, then him having his brother back (and a nephew he can officially confirm now) must surely have an impact on his way of thinking and career as a devil hunter. Conversely, if Vergil's desire for power came from a place of wanting to be protected and loved, then imagine how much his views will change now that he has someone he could protect and love.

Notice at 8:20 that Agnus doesn't ask "What is it that humans have?" but, rather, "What is it that demons lack?". I think that angered Dante. That all he (Agnus) had been writing wasn't to grow into a better human but a stronger and less human demon. Just my speculation though
@ascapedgoat84625 жыл бұрын
You might be happy to know that in the Agnus scene, Dante IS referring to compassion. It’s stated by Nero when the defeated Sanctus Dioblica cried out to the sword of Sparda, asking if he’s not worthy to wield the power. “I never payed attention to those sermons, but I DO know that Sparda had a heart. A heart to love another person. A HUMAN. And that is what you lack!” -Nero to Sanctus.

Great analysis. I've always believed that the Devil May Cry games have better stories than they are usually given credit. Another thing to about Dante is that initially he didn't care about his demonic heritage but with each game he grows to respect his fathers legacy and heritage. Not a full embrace like Vergil did but a growing respect. (Spoilers for DMC5) 5 also brings this full circle by having Vergil finally learn to respect his human heritage through his experience as V.
@ChampionAnalysis5 жыл бұрын
I believe that is one of the reasons why their rivalry seems less intense by the end of the game. The both of them fought on a ideological level too (V's whole thing about fighting for their justice). I believe they have more of an appreciation for each other's perspective (this assuming V's appreciation for his humanity returned to Vergil when he fused). I also get the feeling that they both are secretly happy to have each other again at the end of the game after Nero beat some sense into Vergil lol this is more to go into for the Vergil analysis coming up. I think the reason is because, in DMC1, the story is pretty mediocre. One moment from the anime I like pointing to is episode 4 when Dante is moments away from Belphegor being free to escape into the human world and he jumps right in there to shove it's stupid face back through the gate. He could probably get a really good fight at taking on yet another demon lord but knows it might be something powerful enough that he can't guarantee the safety of the city. Despite being perpetually bored and disinterested in that series, he still puts the lives of humans ahead of his own excitement if he can.
@lucaswibisono13164 жыл бұрын
I think its Episode 3 btw. Episode 4 is where Lady and Trish first met. But yeah, i really like that episode overall. Since this is probably the first time that Dante actually denies a mission simply because the demon he wanted to kill become very human. Usually he denies missions because either he's too lazy or just generally not interested until someone said demons.
@a.z.pantera55775 жыл бұрын
Despite being a very human individual, he does have this innate thirst for battle from way back when he was fighting with Vergil. Despite being in pain after losing his brother to the demon world, he suddenly revels in slaughtering more demons when they show up. "This is what I live for. I'm absolutely crazy about it!" So fighting demons is not only a personal mission, but also a pastime and outlet. When Dante and Vergil head to the Underworld to seal the portal and all is said and done, they're just dukin' it out having fun beating the shit out of each other. Not for any grand reason anymore, but simply to settle a score and have time as brothers in the best way they know how.

I love the parallel between Dante and Vergil in the scene where they are stabbing themselves, Vergil wanting more power sees his human side as his weakness and uses Yamato so separate human from demon ... all while facing away from his family portrait. Could it be that part of Dante blames Vergil for their mother's death? "The thing you don't know is, she tried to save you, too. She kept searching and searching... Until it killed her." Fleshing out this pivotal moment in their life really added so much to their rivalry and it feels much better now. Let's just say that in DMC 3 they were both too young to understand why they hate each other so much. What do you think of the moment Dante just rushes to fight Vergil when he shows up for the first time while he takes his time to talk to Urizen? It's an interesting thing to discuss. Some people have criticized it as bad writing but I think there might be something more to it. Anyway, nice video. :)
@ChampionAnalysis5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching :D I do have a Vergil video planned so please feel free to subscribe for when that comes out. I'm thinking of speeding the production on that one since this one did so well compared to my other videos. As for that Urizen moment, I think the setting was emotionally triggering for Dante since it was their home. Dante acts so cool and aloof, like nothing bothers him, but I bet he did feel something overcome him a little. Making him talk about that time to Urizen, who he thought was just Vergil still at the time (while keeping his aloof persona up of course). That's what I think anyway. It is an interesting encounter since in DMC 3 they were just filled with so much angst rather than actually trying to talk about that day. Even Vergil started to think about that day to himself more while he was at the top of the Qliphoth.
@NikolaBg355 жыл бұрын
@@ChampionAnalysis And the other weird thing about that scene is he just lets V finish off Urizen. The only way I can justify that moment is if, again, some part of him knew who V was all along and wanted to see real Vergil back. That reminds me of another inconsistency. Before Dante stabs himself with Rebellion he knows that Yamato has power to separate demon from human which would imply that he knows about what happened to Vergil. But, he wasn't around when V told this story to Trish. I avoid to read into things but I think this story has depth and it really pisses me off when most of the journos discount it as silly B action movie schlock. P.S. I don't think you should rush your next video because it will not necessarily translate into views/subs if you make it quicker. Just do your best to make a quality content and good luck. :)

It's pretty great, and it's surmised in his theme Subhuman, the songs lyrics describe Dante pretty much fighting his inner demon so that it won't get loose, and the only thing stopping it is the things he experienced and went through growing up with his mother and family life being destroyed by mundus and his legions, as well as Vergil disappearing for nearly 20 years before the events of DMC 3, and having him embrace his demonic heritage, however, in order to protect an save the ones he loves and holds dear, Dante needs to unleash the very devil in him to do just that. Sweet video man. The series deserves more credit then it gets with the story. Sure, it’s corny as all hell, but it’s all there. The anime sheds a lot of light onto his humanity as well because of how it shows him depressed. Aimless, bored, and destitute, he only comes alive when he’s embracing his demonic heritage and slaying creatures. Characters like Patty help to break that vicious self destructive pattern. He keeps making himself into a loner but the reality is that he *needs* company otherwise he goes into a downward spiral. Trish even has this scathing motherly comment about how he is eating waaaaay too much pizza. He’s a seemingly simple character but because everything around that character ties in so strongly he becomes a lot deeper than many give him credit for. Either way, sweet vid man.

While this video was pretty stellar, I have to say that neglecting DMC2 (despite how most feels about the game itself) is kinda unbecoming. Seeing Dante dark and brooding because he had once again is the cause of his brother demise. Dante shows some genuinely human moments and his cold storic personality greatly reflects off of Lucia's who is a demon who thought she was human her entire life. The same aloof attitude Dante had in 2 carried on in 4, but he was most def more cheerful once he found out his brother's momentos (Yamato and Nero) was the center of attention.

Until DMC 3, Dante denied his demonic side to some extent, while Vergil embraced it. Vergil thinks that their mother died because she was too weak. Dante knows that their mother was strong, brave and caring. Thus, their character traits. Man, I love this franchise so fucking much.
@My2Cents.iF79342 жыл бұрын
8:26 EXACTLY dude! Compassion for others is exactly why Sparda's bloodline is so powerful. The Dark Knight himself became sympathetic to humanity. Even if he was only Mundus' general in the beginning, once he gained that compassion, he was able to overpower him and seal the Hell Gates. Dante, as half a human, has more compassion than a normal demon ever could. With Rebellion in hand, he was able to unite the compassion of his human half with the destructive power of his demon half to unlock his Sin Devil Trigger. Nero, even more human than his uncle, regrew his whole ass arm through the power of him wanting to keep his family intact, and then singlehandedly overpowered both of the twins.

I was never under the impression that Dante isn't a righteous person. From what I recall of a interview with Hideki Kamiya he wanted him to be the "Clean Cut hero" I believe. Which would explain why he's so different in personality in that game writing wise
@ChampionAnalysis5 жыл бұрын
Dante definitely isn't very on the nose about his righteousness as traditional heroic characters are.
@sageoverheaven4 жыл бұрын
Nah, he wasn't very righteous even in 1. Only reason he took Trish's job was because she looked like Eva, and this is consistent with the DMC novel by Goikeda (overlooked and vetted by Kamiya), where he is almost completely driven by his need to avenge his family. Dante's second battle theme from DMC3 (Divine Hate) has a reference to the novel in the lyrics ("from the angst of lost memories, a just revenge to cure misery"), and DMC5: Before the Nightmare flat out canonizes nearly every part of it.

Meeting Lady really was the moment where he really started to become the legendary devil hunter Dante and failing to help Vergil no doubt left a parmanent mark of guilt on him. Good stuff.

Another interesting point is that after the events of DMC 3, for some time at least, Dante actively dehumanized himself. He refused to let himself be the human he is. "Are you crying?" "Its only the rain." "The rain already stopped..." *"Devils never cry."* Then in DMC 1, he reinforces that statement, but including himself as human. "Devils Never Cry...tears...are a gift only humans have." And in the DMC Anime, he refuses to kill a demon posing as a human after that demon shows compassion and kindness for the human race, saying "Sorry, I cant kill anything that isn't a demon, and I don't see any demons here." Defeating and abandoning Vergil in the Demon World really fucks with him it seems.

Dante is super interesting. Him and Yu Narukami rank as my top protagonists. Dante is a neutral character it seems by his actions. He doesnt give a shit about justice it seems more like his own selfish motives. At least at first. Then it comes to dmc3s events (the first in the series timeline) and he begins to embrace his family. His father. Until the end he never once said "my father". Seeing Lady really hit with him. The more he interacted with her he gained love. Not romantic but to his family. And to humans. He then began to realize what he wanted. And how to empathize. Thats when he really began to embrace his humanity. And he began to gain power. And for the first time actually beat vergil. It was accepting that that makes him superior. Hes going with what he finds fun. Less serious than he was at the start of dmc3. Its a sign of his growth. Even after all his growth tho he never once decides to be a justice seeker. He has nothing to prove. But he is willing to help those who ask for his help. Which is literally the purpose behind his shop. And why imo his shop is the biggest testament how hes more human than demon. Its a place for help. Something he never got. The feeling of helplessness he had when his mother was murdered carried with him. And he used it to empathize with a collective people.

3:50 But Dante is hero *and* did heroic acts. Dante in DMC3 has started off bitter, no care for anything and living for the sake of living. But he developed towards the end of the game. Even if we put aside the literary definition of a hero (the main character in a literary work), family is a grand value, it's worth fighting for. Heroic doesn't just mean fighting for something abstract like greater good, justice. It means sacrificing yourself, taking a responsibility for something greater than yourself.

One major flaw in your analysis: Dante is involved in all kinds of demonic events, be it family or just in general. He's a professional demon hunter ffs. The games just choose to tell the story of his family because they're key events in his character development. In DMC3 Dante didn't give a shit about his family, but it's until he met Lady he realized why it's important, and began to actually care for his brother. The anime miniseries explores his life outside of his family fights. Family is an important theme in the games but the heart of the whole franchise is about humanity.

I have a thought, it involes Dante's shop itself devil may cry i don't know if anyone else though of this but the shop itself may have a symbolic value besides the fact of how character's question if devils cry since dante cried for Vergil. It could rather be a symbol for the series as a whole as we constanly see Dante in debt only ever seeming "to find a job" when a game comes out. A good example is DMC5 as we see the shop with the lights out and Dante just sleeping in it as he hasn't had a job in a while, which could be seen as how we ourselves have not had a game in years. Which could indicate that while Dante gets "jobs to keep the lights running" we get "games to keep the series running". Just an interesting idea I had.

I don't think Dante being motivated by his family means he's not a hero. Peter Parker is motivated by Uncle Ben and the hand he had in his death, but he's totally a hero. Plus neither Dante nor Spider-Man have a habit of doing big soapboxes about justice and all that. His conversation with V in 5 as well as the anime imply that he's done plenty of big jobs that didn't involve his family. He's clearly not devil hunting just to survive either, given the state the shop is in in 5.
@c-red46375 жыл бұрын
I mean I don't blame Dante for ignoring lady in the beginning, she did pop a cap in the guys head after being saved from most a likely drop to her death.
@kjlop144 жыл бұрын
Video is crafted well, but I feel like it sorta misrepresents Dante. Dante is more than willing to help people out for no benefit to himself. In the anime, he takes on multiple jobs for no pay. When someone has a demonic issue, and they are too poor to pay, he takes on the job anyway. Dante is also shown just staying in contact with clients after a job is done. He even saves the world from a demon with absolutely no connection to his family, and takes care of an orphan with no tie to his family In the dmc5 novel, dante is revealed to be so poor because he sends money to a family who lost their father, who he use to work with. The games are so closely tied to his family that it might be hard to separate his kindness from his family, but dmc3 makes it clear that dante awakens to a deep love for humanity in general. His family's involvement is *definitely a factor* and dante definitely values his family heavily, but his family is not his sole motivation to save the world

Also, I still hate Dmc2 just as much as Capcom does, and after 3 came out I knew for sure that 2 was barely canon. It got like 2 second of images and like no mention in the DMC5: History it DMC. I mean Dante saw caring and compassion as his life was destroyed, Virgil saw loneliness and weakness as he was helpless to do anything and probably felt abandoned, made very known when Dante told him their mom tried to save him too.
