One thing that has always piqued my interest about the Divine Comedy, and thus the 7 Deadly Sins (and several of the Virtues, for that matter) is that they all break down to Pride in one way or another... Greed (I deserve it, you can't have it), Lust (I deserve it, I will take it), Envy (I deserve it, I want it), Gluttony (I deserve it, I'll ingest it), Wrath(I'm better, I'm right, you're wrong, and I'll prove it by breaking your face), Sloth (I'm better and I don't have to do anything that you can't do for me). In every case, the underlying sin is "it's all about me" in one way or the other.
@M.S.G.95
@M.S.G.95 3 жыл бұрын
This is actually a really good perspective on it.
@silasfrisenette9226
@silasfrisenette9226 3 жыл бұрын
I think that's because the greatest sin of all is being a leech on society; the "worst" human, especially in older, smaller societies, would be the one who didn't contribute, but only took. I don't agree that Pride is necessarily the root motivation for the rest of the sins (sometimes you just want to munch food for example, not because you think you're better than everyone else, but just because .. Well food!!!), but I see why pride may seem connected; what I think all of these share is the focus on one's self. None of them make humans that contribute to society (a sloth won't work in the field), but rather humans that break down society or takes more than they give 🤔
@silasfrisenette9226
@silasfrisenette9226 3 жыл бұрын
Wrath and Envy are the two emotions (well possible Lust as well) that are a bit separated from the concept of a "productive human being" versus af "draining member of society", but both are emotions that can somehow interrupt society - Envy can make you stuck in an unproductive loop, and wrath will obviously also create issues .. I like to draw back principles in religion to the earliest societies, and I definitely see the sins as symptomatic of what you WOULDN'T want in your tribe; dispute and draining of ressources
@tomkerruish2982
@tomkerruish2982 3 жыл бұрын
This is quite possibly why Pride is the first terrace, supporting the other six. (I'm pretty sure this is mentioned by John Ciardi in his translation of the Comedy, which is wonderfully, wonderfully footnoted.) Similarly, Sloth is placed centrally, representing knowing the right thing to do and not doing it.

Fun Fact: The color black and blue mentioned around 14:56 is akin to the color of a bruise. It is believe that envy bruises one's own soul. Edit 1: The smog at 18:10 represents how wrath can blind one's own self. Hence, the term, blinded by rage. Edit 2: The ones on the terrace of sloth run in circles. Given that their spirits are slothful in life, they have to make it active here.

I find it more of a relief than terrifying because it is a story of a chance at redemption. If Heaven, Purgatory, Hell exist the way Dante describes them, I would be relieved if I landed in Purgatory. It just means it's a matter of time before I get into Heaven. I haven't lived a perfect life, but I've done what I can to help others. If I landed in Hell... Well.... Game Over.

@@345635356 I'm sorry to let you know that unbaptized people are put in the limbo (before inferno). Virgilio for example is one of them, he lived far before the believing of God as we know it I don't know if it's something unique but Dante's Divina Commedia it's an actual subject that is teached at school in the course of 3 years (inferno, purgatorio, paradiso)

@@345635356In the limbo they will forever fell a sense of emptyness because they want to meet God, but this hope won't ever realize The only exception Dante does in this regard is putting Cantone da Utica as the guardian of the anti purgatorio (the beach before the purgatory) wich died in 44 DC by suicide. It sound like a controsense but Dante interpret his life in a more Christian way. Anyway don't just belive me, search something and you will probably find it interesting Sadly the fact that is teached in school to us makes it a lot less interesting and I can't appreciate it properly

Virgil was truly a good friend. I'm actually sad that he's gone. I wonder where he went after he left Dante because he promised to not go back to the first circle of hell. 💔

i think Virgil actually stayed in purgatory, because he had lived before christ was born. but since he died prior to christ's birth, he cannot be allowed in heaven.

Thanks for the effort on this one. It was awesome, I hope the amount of likes can be pumped up over the next several months to get the ultimate finale to the series. Also, if I may toss out a recommendation for the future, I think a version of Milton's Paradise Lost would be out of this world cool. Keep up the outstanding work!!!!

Virgil - Guides Dante through hell and purgatory while interacting with angels, all to lead Dante to Heaven. Also Virgil - I don't believe in God, so I'm handing you off to this chick so she can take you to God.
