Been watching wendi for years and i love his stuff, I'm excited to have his be the version I'm getting it introduced in.

I honestly love the fact that Inferno was all Dante gloating about how the people he didn't like were suffering in Hell because they took life for granted, and the ending of Purgatorio is Beatrice going "Dude, you're doing the exact same thing they were." As much as people rag on Inferno for being "Biblical fanfiction," the fact Dante wasn't afraid to cast himself off as a coward and a hypocrite says a lot about his integrity as an artist.

Yes, Dante's writing does "improve" as he ascends to heaven. It is on purpose. Hell is characterized by unelegant, simple, unrefined expressions. Purgatory's language is more curated, more elaborated. Heaven's language is the closest it gets to pure poetry. It is more elevated and beautiful. When studying this is high school, hell was reserved for 1st year, purgatory for 2nd year, heaven for 3rd year students. That's because it gets harder and harder to analyze and understand. Specially heaven, you really need to have some sort of translation next to it. We have multiple versions of the comedy, from less "adulterated" to almost completely translated. I remember our version had the original script on the left and a modern italian translation on the right. So you're not imagining that Dante's writing gets better:D Actually glad you noticed. Hopefully the english translation was accurate enough~

great vid, as always. As an italian in his 20s i will give you a bit of context about the relevance of the divine comedy in modern day italy. in every school in italy, in middle school you are introduced to Dante, then in every high school (no matter if scientific, classical, techincal, ecc) you will study every canto of the Inferno, and it takes years, and in some schools you even study the Purgatorio and the Paradiso. Also, Dante published the divine comedy in Florence in episodes, every canto was a different episode, and it got people in florence hooked, he was the original netflix! also think of it not in a litteral way, the Inferno was basically a diss track against his political enemies. Also, his version of italian (because at the time italian was not a universal language for the italian peninsula) became the foundation of modern standard italian. This stuff is the litteral backbone of italian litterature to this day. ah, also, my elementary school was called Dante Aligheri, i just remembered now while writing this, lol.

A couple of cool facts about the Divine Comedy: - Dante wrote it in 15 years, that is why you see a style change - The comedy is written so it rhymes in a way to recall sacred numbers multiple times, for example you have 3 sections (inferno, purgatorio and paradiso) and each of this section is described in 33 canti. - The idea behind the shape of Hell, Purgatory and Heaven is that when Satan fell he created a "Heaven" in his image, doing that all the dirt he moved went to form the Mountain of Purgatory at the other side of the world. - When Dante and Virgilio get from Hell to Purgatory they use a narrow passage (which is where all the dirt from Hell came to form Purgatory) and all that is meant to resemble the act of birth from the fetus perspective.

Huh, I think this is the first time I've ever truly understood the appeal of faith and religion. Like, obviously I've always understood, on a more abstract level, that it brings comfort and direction and a sense of purpose to many people, but seeing this guy getting emotional about the end of Purgatory finally made it really "click" for me. This was an incredibly moving and enlightening video even for somebody who's never been religious at all.

It really does give some sort of solace. It's nice to believe that maybe, just maybe, there is a force of unending mercy and love. If I'm wrong I'm wrong but with all the bad in the world, it's nice to think that there is a love greater than what I can humanly conceive when I die. I hope that everyone can find that solace.

Jesus Christ is God incarnate who came to earth to be born and live a perfect life, a sinless life. (He is one person of the Trinity, consisting of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; one God in three persons not three Gods.) Jesus then gave Himself up to be crucified and died to pay for the sins of the whole world. My sin, your sin, the sins of everybody. 3 days later He was resurrected. He now offers salvation to all who will turn from their sin and trust Him to save them from eternity in hell. He paid our debts because we couldn't, but we have to trust Him to do it. I cannot add anything to what He has done (not even baptism). I cannot do enough good to take even a year off of my death sentence in hell. The sentence is a never ending one, because I have sinned against an eternal God. But Jesus took my punishment, He saved me, and offers that same salvation to you. I am praying for you.

30:30 you are in fact correct to say that his writing "improved": as a matter of fact, he planned to "upgrade" his writing style throughout the whole book, as he "traveled" up to heaven. you see, in medieval times, there used to be two versions of "italian" as we know it now, caused by the fact that not everyone was able to study-and Italy wasn't unified yet, so the languange would divide itself: they used to speak either "volgare" and latin, the first one being the "language of the poors" (for example, what a poor medieval farmer would know, so kind of the basic and more simple speech) and the second well..it's latin (if you were a priest or high up in the social ranking-or just rich enough to be able to study, you would know latin). Dante obliviously knew latin as well and so he planned to have a writing style/write the dialogues in three different ways: inferno would have the most basic speech (with lots of swears and cursing too), meanwhile purgatorio would have had a more high up level of speech, not latin yet but sort of a midway, something that a well taught person would know but still be able to be understood even by some of the "lower socially ranked" people. then up to paradise, it gets to straight up latin and just has reeeally complicated words/expressions. ideally, the closer you get to God, the harder it gets to comprehend. hope this was useful :)

This video tripped me out. Towards the end where you mention Beatrice stating in the future someone known as "515" would come to defeat the vixen and the giant. I had no knowledge whatsoever regarding this before watching this series on the divine comedy. But I had a vision in a dream involving the number 515 that sent chills down my spine back when it happened, and was instantly reminded of it as soon as you mentioned it. In the dream I was inside the foyer of a church I went to as a child. I hadn't been inside the church for at least a decade at this point. It seemed to take place in the future as this church was somewhat outdated in terms of decor, but it was all updated and renovated. I was speaking to who I presume was the pastor in this foyer (was dressed like a pastor for sure) he wasn't someone I know or recognized. I don't recall the conversation at all but what I do remember is noticing a fancy wooden plaque over the doors that lead into the sanctuary that just had the number "515" written on it. I asked the pastor dude about it and he simply replied with "WE ARE THE 515" and I awoke immediately knowing I just experienced something important but not knowing what it meant at all. The best thing I could come up with was that he was referencing psalm 51:5. That seemed relevant at the time as I was deeply in sin at that point in my life. Hearing this symbolism from Dante just added a whole new layer of confusion to it Anyone with ears to hear have any ideas?

You could take that a step further and say Alduin is the serpent returning to drag him down, and the Dovahkiin is the angel sent down (By Akatosh in this case) to fight him off. The relationship between them even has the same consequences. Just as in Purgatorio, the day the "angel" can't fight anymore and the "serpent" wins, that marks the beginning of "Judgment day", or the end of the Kalpa cycle in the context of Skyrim. I don't know if the writers intended all of that necessarily, but it's fun to think about all the parallels you can draw.

It feels as if, and this is my interpretation, Dante wrote the trilogy in memory of Beatrice. He loved her so much it was a way to relieve his grief and to overcome it. To write the stages of his loss and acceptance. He represents her as Jesus because in life she was his saviour and he felt like she saved him from a life of sin, and that he cannot live without her, at least not a good life. Without her he faltered, and is ashamed of himself for falling from grace so easily. He comes to learn in a reflection tthrough religious beliefs, she doesn't need to be there for him to love her and to do good with her. That he can do good and live right in respect of her, just as he was doing while she was alive. This is a love story, a story of a man who would walk through hell for the woman he loved. But instead of coming home with her, he learned to overcome his grief and that one day they may be together again.

I first read Inferno in college nearly 20 years ago and I’ve been obsessed with it ever since. Not long after reading it I was lucky enough to take a 2 week trip to Italy and was actually able to see Dante’s tomb. It was really sad to see, knowing of his exile and how he couldn’t even be interred in the place he loved most. I’ve actually never read the entire Divine Comedy despite wanting to and owning a copy (that was written in Italian with the English translations on the opposite pages; I was seriously obsessed with Italy back then and hope to return someday), so I really enjoyed listening to you summarize it. I actually started crying with you! I’m not religious, if anything I’m a pantheist, but even that little bit of faith has been tested lately. Last summer I was hospitalized with sepsis and put on a ventilator. I was close to death for a couple of days, both my lungs so full of fluid they were completely white on x-rays. There were a few times I was semi-conscious, and my clearest memory is feeling *intensely* alone. I didn’t know where my parents were, I actually thought I had been moved from ICU to a private room far away from everyone else, left alone with no loved ones to support me. I found out later that I hadn’t been moved, of course, and my mother had spent every single day in my room, and I’d been visited by aunts, cousins, friends. My older cousin who I haven’t seen in years, he’s a preacher, and he saw me on two separate occasions to pray over me. I was so moved. My psychiatrist has since told me I have PTSD from this incident and I definitely agree with the assessment. It’s been over 6 months and I relive that loneliness everyday. I used to hope that when you die you would at least know, feel it somehow, or be reassured by loved ones at your side. But now I think it’s lonely and no matter who’s there nothing will comfort you. It’s terrifying. But listening to you get emotional over faith and the idea of a guide walking with you so you don’t have to be alone… it’s really beautiful and hopeful and actually the one thing that got me through my experience. I’m not religious, but I believe in those who’ve gone before me, they’re the ones I call angels. I just turned 40, my life is far from done, and the love of the people who have already passed will protect me. That’s what I thought when I would get scared. And it comforted me, every time. I have faith in the bonds we make in life. Sorry for the huge emotion vomit but this video seriously hit me in the feels, too. Thanks, Wendi. - a fellow Appalachian

if it's any small comfort, 99% of every single story from someone who has been dead and resuscitated stated that they felt warm, at comfort, and completely protected, like a giant hug. Even cases where people killed themselves after being brought back because of how good and comforting death felt. So in reality, it's very likely that ACTUALLY being dead is just a very pleasant and comfortable state of sleep, just floating contently.

57:45 I think that’s why Dante is justified in saying he’s the greatest poet. He’s the greatest because he has taken the works of philosophers, and Virgil, and used it to write his poems. He was able to run because they walked before him, and he is a better poet because he had the foundation that Virgil, St Thomas Aquinas, etc established. He’s acknowledging all the works before him and saying that they were what made his work possible. He doesn’t say he’s the greatest poet in competition with them, but in cooperation with them, that they were his teachers, and he took what they taught him and built upon it.

But I kinda get what you mean with all this love and forgiveness stuff making you feel things. Back in high school, nothing made me more sure in my faith than talking about it with my atheist friend. She never expressed any interest in converting (and I wasn’t about to try to force her to), but she always seemed so fascinated with what I had to say about my practices and some of the stories from our tradition, and…I don’t even know how to describe how it made me feel. Lighter I guess? But we both got so much out of just talking about what I’ve been taught and what I believed in that, when I got Confirmed, she was the first person I wanted to tell. As an atheist, I gotta say that the christian mythos and iconography are the most beautifull out there. An unique trait of christianity is the notion that beauty is a form of devotion. Other religions out there certainly created beautiful things in their own way, but they don't compare. For other religions, beauty is just comfort for their mortal bodies, while in christianity beauty has a divine purpose. A form of immortality in itself, because the body of the artisan decays while the work lives on. And as a fan of Roger Scruton, I gotta say that secular society lost a lot by forgetting it's christian roots. Faith in God gave way to faith in the State, with it's ugly, utilitarian, brutalist architecture designed to make the individual feel small.

As someone who isn't superstitious, I always found death to be quite alright, having been around it a fair bit. What seems to be problematic as I've seen it is that people left behind tend to focus on nostalgia and the potential time lost as opposed to focusing on the time that was had with whoever died. It's like being given an ice-cream, then half way through it, an earthquake makes you drop it in mud. Instead of being sad about the half you didn't get to eat, consider how cool it was that you got to eat any ice-cream at all.

I know this video is months old now but I want to share what I've been taught in school in Italy about the 515 (here they make us study the whole thing). 515 in roman numbers is DXV, which if we re-arrange it spells DVX, which is the latin word for "the one who leads", so basically referring to an emperor 515 also indicates a date, as the prophecy says that in that time someone will free society (or something like that) and lead it to salvation. To find this date that Dante's referring to we can add 515 to 800 (date of the creation of the Holy Roman Empire), which makes 1315, which the prophecy says it's going to be the date of the redeption of the Church. So, by connecting the dots, we can come to the conclusion that the 515 prophecy refers to Henry VII of Luxemburg, who was on the Pope's side instead of the French King's side in the whole Italian politics thing that caused conflict everywhere and also is the thing Dante costantly talks about when referring to the Florence politics and blah blah blah. Basically, Henry VII started an expedition in Italy in 1310 to help with the Pope's side cause, so, Dante, who was also on the Pope's side, was a huge fan of that and through this prophecy he expressed his hope for the redemption of the Church through this "DVX" (emperor) Henry VII in 1315. How did it go? Henry VII died in 1313 of whatever disease Lol Idk if someone will read this comment, but hope it helps Great video btw :)

I’m seeing a lot of comments like this. It’s really cool you’re tolerant and even sympathetic towards the religious. We need more of that if ether side wants to try change the others minds. However, The divine comedy is fiction. There’s not much that’s biblically accurate in what Dante wrote. Honestly, Dante made it sound way more fantastical then it actually is.
@TheBandDemigoddess2 жыл бұрын
@@Steph-sk3xb I think the fact that it IS fiction is what gives it so much more power to atheists. As one myself, the fantastical nature of the Bible and other canon stories just seem too outlandish. But knowing it was written as fiction gives the values portrayed and the lessons it teaches that much more meaningful, because we aren't forced to believe all of these things actually happened, we're just expected to learn and grow from the lessons and values!

If you read and study many stories of the Bible, you’ll be shocked to find that many of its lessons are deeply rooted in human nature. it is pretty clear that you are confusing christianity with american /western lifestyle and politics from the way you describe it and this is common with americans (they cannot grasp that they are only a small part of the world's population) and it is true that things are very messed up there which is also why the west is declining so rapidly both in population and in everything else (they are being replaced by muslim immigrants), however there is nothing more widespread and diverse than christianity (and islam in that sense), it is impossible to stereotype something that is part of all cultures, you have to remember that western countries make up less than 6% of the world's population, the overwhelming majority of christians are from africa, asia and latin south

Sorry about all that happened with the church. I hate when people are like that and they give Christians a bad look which is not how we are. As a person of Baptist faith, I'm so sorry again. No one should have that happen to them in the body of Christ. Jesus was the one who told us to love everyone sort of like He unconditionally loved us. That's what I'm trying to work towards more in my life. And it's hard to love all like Jesus does! And hopefully we can change the outlook of others who think we are all bad by just being good people. Like wishing someone that God gives them a nice day or telling someone God loves them! I heard a great analogy about this recently I will pass on. 2000 years ago a boat builder built a magnificent ship (Church) and entrusted it to a flawed but worthy Captain (Peter, first Bishop) and it set sail around the world. Over the centuries, the crew has changed and the Captains have been replaced, the boat has been refurbished and restored at times, and many copies/replicas have been made as well. Sometimes there is a good Captain and sometimes there is a bad one, sometimes the crew are amazing, and sometimes crooks and thieves, but the ship remains to this day, and it is a splendid and beautiful thing, sanctified by Jesus himself. I used to hate religion, I looked at it as the bringer of many an evil to this world. But it's not the ship that is the wrong on this analogy, it isn't the boat that is flawed, it is the crew and Captain's. I have now returned to my faith, and theology and find it a truly beautiful and splendid thing. Hope this gives you something worthy of musing on as I did. 😊
