I found it very telling that both Dante and Vergil have deep regrets and emotional wounds from the death of Eva. Dante strives to protect mankind from demons because he accidentally killed his Mom with his Devil Trigger. Vergil seeks power, not to rule, but to be strong enough to protect what he cares about, because he couldn't save his Mom while she hid him in the closet.
