Don't forget substrate! Pool filter sand or Play Sand from home Depot are like $5 for 50 lbs, compared to aquarium sand from a pet store that's like $20 for 5lbs or something like that.

Just an FYI, instead of paying for polyester fiberfill, buy a $3.00 cheap bed pillow from Walmart. Same filling inside!!

Good video Dan. Lots of people talk about how Red Eared Sliders get too big, therefore they make terrible pets, and then they end up dumping them. But what if people knew they could buy a tub at TSC for 80 bucks and create their own filter like you suggest? I think we might see less RES’s “returned” to the wild if more people knew they don’t need to buy thousands of dollars to keep their pet.

I've been using a livestock trough from rubber made for about 30 years. Bought it for $150 for a 100 gallon way back in the old days.

So true! I bought a tub for $3 and now I still don’t have to change anything 🐢

Tanks get algae blooms super fast also. Had to build a custom cover for my 150 gallon for high sun days.

#1 save money on enclosure............ I just spent around $800 making a turtle enclosure....... no regrets 😂. It's huge and look really awesome considering it was my first enclosure build. I took an 8x4ft utility trailer and put acrylic glass on the frame for walls, along with some other stuff, but it's basically a turtle house on wheels now 😂

I got a kiddie pool at wallmart for 10$ its perfect for my fairly large RES. If i had more money at the time they had an even bigger and taller kiddie pool for about 15?21? i dont remeber. I think the tank is the biggest price tag.

Hi, I have had a turtle for 5 years now but I have just started to do research. Last year I upgraded to a 350 stock tank outside, I have 3 turtles, a 6 inch, and two 5 inches, it is currently NOT filtered. I was looking at what GPH a new filter should be some places say it should be times 5 but a filter for 1750 gallons seems like a lot. Help I don't know what to do.

I use a 3x filter and so far, so good. Although I only got 1 turtle... 3 turtles are definitely way more messy🤔

Hey Dan will it be safe to add a fully grown male musk turtle with a 9month old female musk
@DanTheTurtleMan_2 жыл бұрын
So long as their sizes are similar and they have plenty of hiding spots. Keep an eye that the male doesn't incessantly bother the female

Hmm..I dont know if its a good idea to heat plastic tubs and dont expect any chemicals to be released into the water. Maybe its cheaper, but ..not better for the health of your turtles. My view on this is ..when you dont have the money to buy proper tanks, just let it be.

Please don't take turtles from the wild. That wasn't the point of this video. Unless they're invasive, native turtles are already on the decline and the species you mentioned are readily available in captivity for fairly cheap
