as a working professional interior designer who is currently in the process of getting a masters in interior architecture, i was curious to see how u wud explain the difference. I feel the difference between interior architecture & interior design is getting less with time given the ever increasing requirements & accreditations for interior design (I'm based in USA), but you really explained it so well! *side note I just realized I typed a whole essay, but for anyone who is confused about the work of an interior designer, because I sure was when I started my undergrad program, hope this helps. I have a commercial interior design background & I'm just starting out really - there are so many different career paths you can take with an interior design degree, I took a pretty commercial/corporate route but there are plenty of other options, residential, or working at smaller firms that specialize in a particular industry like food & service, hospitality, etc. There's also the option of shifting your career into a different design profession. The basis of any Design degree is the same 1st year core classes of basic design principles. Interior designers, industrial designers, graphic designers, fashion designers all take these same basic courses. interior design is probably the hardest to transition to just because of all the additional accreditation requirements & information relating to the built environment that is critical to being a good interior designer, but it's doable & much easier than transitioning into a completely different field. Now, in regards to the difference between interior architecture & interior design, in my firm I definitely see the architects being the ones who do programming/circulation/ca/coordinating structural details with structural engineers, etc, but there is also so much overlap. for example, the senior interior designer in my office can do all of this as well. I also know personally I learned programming/zoning & circulation planning in my undergrad accredited interior design program. as a junior interior designer at my current firm I've been working in BIM software (revit) & working on detail drawings for interiors (millwork/finish details & coordinating inconsistencies of design in the interior) along with other things like furniture plans, finish selections, hardware, etc. I've also done material boards & also I remember in my 1st week they had me work on a test fit/space program for an office but i did it so bad they never asked me again T_T I was NERVOUS ok... & like I said, just starting my career. But I can expect that I'll probably do that at some point in the future again. One major difference I really feel though is when you are working with architects, they themselves have no idea what interior designers actually learn (or many of them dont), so you will find a lot of push and shove between interior designers & architects who's skills overlap but where architects seem to see Interior designers as closer to decoration at times... The senior interior designer in my office said that when she's discussed distribution of work with the architects in the firm, she has had to describe the interior's team capabilities as the work of interior architecture for them to understand what interior designers can do. So in conclusion, with the title of interior architect, you will be able to better represent yourself as capable of things that you may already know how to do as an interior designer. whether you need the title of interior architect or not is honestly up for debate. I'm getting my master's degree because I know I plan on working in different regions and I want to make sure my skills are understood no matter where I work, basically make my resume universal. If you plan on building your roots in a particular market/area, you probably wouldn't need that as the industry is small in different cities & if you are a good interior designer who has high skills, people will know. There is 1 thing though, with interior design, there are still many interior designers who prefer to stay completely out of the technical side, so I think that doesn't help much with the confusion on the skill range of interior designers because there's inconsistency within the profession. Because of that, I think that's where the interior design certifications come in to play. the more certifications/accreditations you have, the more that will say about your own interests and which areas you excel in or prefer to work in. different firms need different levels of technical skill so it's possible to build your career how you want, whether that's leaning closer or further from architecture. That may change as the accreditation requirements for the interior design profession increase, but for the moment, there is some freedom with that. also side note - I went to a CIDA accredited interior design program (which makes a difference for those of you looking at schools - you will find that CIDA accredited programs lean much closer to that fine line between interior design & interior architecture vs non-accredited schools which take an approach that is probably the line between interior decoration & interior design. That's not a bad thing, it really just depends on where you want your career to go. **1 clarification though, if you want to be titled an interior architect with the same skill level as an architect but specialized in interior, that is a different hurdle from interior design. at least in the US, you would need to take the architectural exams (ARE exams) which are practically like the bar exam for law. architects need to do like 5 exams & that involves way more technical knowledge & will give you the power to approve your own drawings, something that is not possible for interior designers at any level. the NCIDQ exams interior designers take will not give you that power, and are more about certifying that you have the full knowledge of an interior designer. that consists of 3 exams.

I found this video informative and interesting so thanks. With regards to job titles. I studied the subject of Interior Architecture and Design at uni. However, my understanding is that I can't call myself an "Interior Architect" but I can legally call myself an "Interior Designer". This is what the BIID says about it: Whilst the term Interior Architect is commonly used in some countries, under the 1997 Architects Act it is illegal in the UK to refer to yourself as an Interior Architect unless you have had the education, training and experience needed to become an architect and are registered with the Architects Registration Board which is the UK's statutory regulator of architects.

We were also trained to decorate Commercial structures as well, your retail structures, hospitals etc. We were also trained in 15% of architecture. Also, the wonderful thing about the training we got is that, we were trained to manufacture the furniture we designed, as opposed to interior designers who would outsource the manufacturing of the furniture piece they designed. Yes yes yes FINALLY!😍 Someone explaining for the public online on KZbin the difference between interior decoration, interior design and interior architecture!👏🏻😍🌟 This is such a reliever for me!😅 Because I’m an interior architecture student myself and in family gatherings or in gatherings with my friends from other majors like medicine or law or even my high school friends group I tend to take a little bit longer to explain to them why I’m more than an interior designer\decorator and why I’m also different than an architect!😂 And now I can just also share the link of this video with them and bob’s your uncle!😂 Also one thing I’d like to add is that one of the most prevalent features that can distinguish an interior architect from an interior designer or an architect, is the bond between architecture philosophy\ideation and interior spacial design as 3D not just 2D, something an interior architect would consider throughout his or her design process to connect the outside with the inside and also we as interior architects can work on landscape projects because we have the spacial and outdoor building material knowledge that an architect has but with the eye for extra detail that an interior designer would have.👍🏻😁 All in all solid channel and solid content y’all! Well done!👏🏻And good luck with this amazing channel of yours guys!😍 I hope in the future you get the recognition and following that you deserve!👏🏻🥰 Lots of love from Saudi Arabia😄💚🇸🇦 Edit: Also I just subscribed right now! @Erica Wong Can i get more details about interior architecture?
@melissamybubbles61393 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I kept wondering why the decorators on tv shows hardly talk about how a room effects the lives of people living in it. Home owners could be complaining about a noise problem and they'll suggest knocking down walls, which I would think would add to the noise problem. I've been drawing alternative floor plans occasionally since childhood. I'd like to know more about how things like floor plans, sound absorption and transfer, and other aspects of interiors make homes easier or harder to live in. Do interior architects take sensory processing differences into account?
@dantierandbalogh3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! We have to take into consideration many different aspects. Of course there are also people who go off and specialise in certain areas such as lighting, sound proofing etc. Those are the real experts😁
@melissamybubbles61393 жыл бұрын
@@dantierandbalogh Nice. Thank you. I haven't found much information on floor plans and other details from a sensory sensitivity perspective. Most of what I have found about interior design and autism, ADHD, and other disorders concerns schools and home sensory stimulation rooms for children. Most soundproofing videos are for music rooms, although there are some general advice videos. Are there interior architecture materials about designing homes for sensitive adults and families? I have ideas from my own life experience but home shows would think they are blasphemous.

It feels like the difference between a decorator and designer is well laid out, but I am having problems with the distinction between an interior designer and an interior architect as you described it. Here in the US, or at least in the markets I've worked in there has been a hard line between Architect and Interior Designer both will do some space planning, but structural is in the domain of the architect, and materials tend to be the scope of the interior designer. In the UK, who controls certifications for Interior Architects, is it RIBA or is it someone else? Here in the US, we have NCIDQ for interiors and the AIA for architects.
@dantierandbalogh3 жыл бұрын
Hi yes in the USA it is very different to here in Europe. I've even heard that there is no such thing as an interior architect over there?! I talk about this and clear it up in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aoPGqHZ-lKd1eas

Good Explination dividing the different careers. It is, however, really important to state that you cannot call yourself an interior architect in the UK by law without being a fully qualified and licensed architect who's completed their RIBA part 3 (a minimum of 7 years of education). If you have studied interior architecture which is not accredited or you are not a fully qualified architect you are, in essence, an "interior designer" or an "interior architectural designer" not an interior architect here in the uk.

Whilst the term Interior Architect is commonly used in some countries, under the 1997 Architects Act it is illegal in the UK to refer to yourself as an Interior Architect unless you have had the education, training and experience needed to become an architect and are registered with the Architects Registration Board which is the UK's statutory regulator of architects.

This was so well explained! Thank you! Just a question: With Interior Architecture degree I can work "only" as an Interior Designer, can´t I?
@RebelleFleur53 жыл бұрын
Hi, I started questioning myself a lot as an interior architect, as I felt a crisis of not knowing what our purpose is in the architecture industry. As I've been browsing through job ads, they are mainly for architects or 3d modelers or interior designers, and I feel more like solving problems of movement and perception of space, creating mood and atmosphere in the interior rather than drawing furniture, although I wouldn't object creating a furniture solution , but I would also like to think bigger, as in how that exterior influences the interior. I really like working on a figuratively speaking a "shell" that architect prepared and then developing a functional environment depending on the use required by the client.
@RebelleFleur53 жыл бұрын
By the way, in my country to become an Interior Architect, you have to first study 3 years to become Bachelor of Architecture, and then 2 years to become Master of Interior Architecture. I hope this makes some positive difference in our credibility when getting hired to work on projects.
@dantierandbalogh3 жыл бұрын
@@RebelleFleur5 yes it can be confusing for sure! I would look at larger architectural firms as they would have the kind of interior architect projects you are looking for☺️🙏✨

Yes you can be an interior architect with an architecture degree, with the knowledge of architecture you can do that with no problem because interior architecture is a fraction of architecture that you learn on a bachelors of architecture, actually an architect has to design the interior in order to design the exterior of a building, interior architecture is for those we don’t like a lot of the aspects of architecture and prefer to study the amazing world of interior design mixed with architecture but not everything about architecture (mee I think is more funnyy)

Is there alot of difficult math in the studies? My head does not love math unfortunately, but its kinda my dream to be an interior architect! Great video! :D
@dantierandbalogh3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much Fanny!😊 I started A level Maths (but later dropped it due to a crap maths teacher!) thinking that I needed maths for the degree. But here in the UK, you need maths a level to study architecture not interior design/ interior architecture. So hopefully, where you are in the world is ok with no maths :) Also I would say that, in the job/ real-life, the majority of what we do is only geometry and basic maths- certainly not the amount of random crap I was learning at A level (I have never used kinematics, integers or statistical sampling etc EVER AGAIN! So please do not worry. Jacqueline😊✌
