It is very enjoyable watching you cut (or tear) your collage pieces to match the sketch, pulling the edge up to check it against the drawing.

Dan Tirels IS a great artist but maybe you're laying it on a bit thick here? Seriously, I half expect you to ask for his autograph and maybe a lock of his hair. A magician? Hardly. An interesting and cool dude? Absolutely.

These are wonderful Dan. John Piper has been a favourite of Anne and myself for many years. I've just skipped through one of our books on him. If these were in a book of Piper's work, I think they could be taken for his. I've not done any collage for 30 years. I'm making a series of collographs at the moment. It's looking as if I'll have to try some collage work next. Finding my dipping pens will be a challenge!
@DrummerGrrrl2 жыл бұрын
The great thing about dipping pens is that, at least here in the United States they're very inexpensive. The video Dan made with the Andy Warhol technique had me searching through MY art supplies too! LOL. I'm going to go to the local art store near my home and buy several bottles of ink and...a FEW pens! I lose things...😂😀
@gordonjackson26552 жыл бұрын
@@DrummerGrrrl It isn't just me then, good! Actually, I don't tend to loose things as a rule. We simply have so much kit in the house; about 100 musical instuments , including 6 sysnths, 3 drum machines, mics and the outboard processing gear that comes with it, plus a harmonium. Then, 6 cameras and all the gear related to them. Also a small art studio and a 16 channel digital, computer controlled, recording studio. That's without my wife's amazing amount of sewing, textile art materials, painting, crafting etc. Aladin's cave does not come near it! 48 years of marriage gives one plenty of time to collect things. I did mention my collections of minerals, gems, scientific equipment and roughly 2000 books, didn't I? If one of us moves something to a new place because, "It's bettert that way", it becomes lost for many months. Tidyness is not always a good idea.Hehehe.

Thanks very much, it's so good to be able to introduce the work of John Piper, he's always been a favorite and a little underrated. When I was at art school my tutor told me that my work was of a similar style (I'd never heard of him) I soon began to study his work and have always appreciated his work. I know what you mean about losing things especially dipping pens and nibs, I lost my pen halfway through this demo. Hope you get good results if you find your pen.

Do you put something over the collages to keep the pieces from falling off (over time)...or is the glue sufficient? I enjoyed the video and love both pieces!!! Wish I had taken art -- rather than French and archery -- in school!!!
@DanTirels2 жыл бұрын
The glue I use is very strong so there is no need to seal the work once finished. Any good PVA glue would work but the glue stick I use keeps the paper flat and dries very quick, it's also more convenient to use. Glad you enjoyed the demo, I think a lot of people give up on art, but it is such a rewarding activity, although archery lessons at school would have been welcome.
@dhandley88932 жыл бұрын
I have a technical question. How do you seal these works. Is glass adequate enough or did you preserve them in some other way? What type of adhesive are you using? Thanks again for your gift.
@DanTirels2 жыл бұрын
There is no need to spray with a fixative, use a good strong glue. I used a solid glue stick here, it's made from biodegradable cornstarch and is fast setting and strong (brand name : Pritt stick. If you are framing any work on paper it is always necessary to frame behind glass, a bevel card mount helps to lift the glass from the surface of the artwork. Hope this helps.

I wish your pencil marks were a bit darker. I can never actually tell what you're sketching! Why do you do that? I'm not being a jerk. I really want to know. Thanks for another great video.
@DanTirels2 жыл бұрын
Sorry about that, I normally draw the lines even lighter but I was trying to darken them for the camera. I think what I will have to do in future is work on 2 drawings, one for filming with darker visible lines and another with sketched lighter pencil marks. I use the pencil this way because I don't want the marks visible on the finished work, I could use a rubber but this would damage the collage.
