I never knew Turkish was considered a "Middle Eastern" airline (I always thought it was more European). No wonder I was surprised by their quality of service! There are two another aspects why these airliners are attractive: the first one is that you can actually have long layovers (if you wanted) which means you have the ability to leave the airport and see something of the city. Cities like Dubai and Abu-Dhabi are added destinations in their own right in your itinerary. You can leave in Europe in the late evening, sleep on your way to there, arrive in the morning, spend the day there, and continue in the evening to your destination in Asia (like Bangkok f.e.). The other thing is that especially from the European perspective, two flights of 6 hours might actually be more attractive than a non-stop flight. Simply because it enables you to leave the airplane, walk around a bit, sit down somewhere for coffee or whatever, and continue.

Stop fucking saying "Asia" only for east Asia when middle Eastern countries shown here are also in Asia.
@morceen
@morceen 3 жыл бұрын
@@samadpathiyil3493 Middle East/West Asia is related to north Africa, the northern Mediterranean countries and the African horn more than it's related to South, East, Central, Southeast or Northern Asia. Most of the times when you search for studies or for tourism and put "middle east" you will get studies about all Arab countries, and Tunis or Marrakech as tourism destinations alongside Dubai, Beirut, Amman and Istanbul. West Asia, North Africa + Turkey, Iran, Cyprus and sometimes Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan. Besides that both Egypt and Sudan aren't in Asia while are part of the region called Middle East. Middle East as a geographical identity is transcontinental, voth Asia and Africa, also Cyprus which is Levantine Asian territory is a member of the EU, and as a political identity it refer to the Arab countries + Turkey, Iran and Cyprus as nearby countries that aren't Arab. Sometimes they differ by calling the region "greater middle east" or "MENA" and those names only refer to the Arab countries without Turkey, Iran and Cyprus as part of it. Middle East isn't Asia, and the inhabitants of the Arab world are not related to any other Asian nation/ethnicity, while spread on a landscape from Zagrous mountains to the Atlantic ocean and from Suqatra island to southern Anatolia, you can't call Arabs as Asians, and you can't call them Africans, therefore you can't call the middle east Asian, especially when 1.5/4 of its population are in the African part of it, qnd we are not discussing the origin of Arabs, and they had a big population in modern day Egypt in the countrysides and the Eastern coasts since at least 300BCE, and Arabs of North Africa live there since ten centuries so you can't call thrm Asians because their ancestors moved from Asia ro Africa long ago. The Middle East is a transcontinental identity and Arabs are their own regional population, sometimes called the Arab subcontinent, and all of them are members of the 1946 founded Arab league, despite that some majority none Arab countries are members of it such as Somalia, Comoros and Djibouti, as they are not part of this "Arab subcontinent" anyway.

Unless your flight is red-eye, then you'll be forced to deplane in the middle of the night & your sleep, like 3a.m. to stopover in 1 of the ME3 hubs. When I went to the UK from Singapore my parents didn't want to stopover, so we flew SIA, but since that's more expensive we looked for their promotional fares, which a bit ironically is for the morning flight only, as that's a flight you'll more likely to want to have a stopover in-between

Yes the advertised cabins and planes of Emirates are great but I find you get alot of older planes with outdated interiors and not very good meals which obviously aren't advertised. I find Turkish Airlines very consistent, every time i've flown with them in the last 7 years always I find good cabins (All have ICU's) and in my opinion the best plane food in the skies. I know it's far from the Middle East, but I think this is also why Singapore Airport has also become the best airport in the world. Them and Singapore Airlines are also competing with passengers looking for cheaper flights with layovers (or those that have to take one anyway, like those going from Australia to Europe). If you know you have to have a layover somewhere for a few hours, why not pick an airport with a butterfly garden, swimming pool, movie theater, and the Jewel (though that's technically landside)? Obviously, they still have a large number of O&D passengers (maybe more than Dubai, Doha, and others), but I'm sure that has also played a big role in their development.
@Arbyfig
@Arbyfig 3 жыл бұрын
As a person from SG and that studied aviation, if you want to know the answer, its because of their business model, most airports in the US are the traditional kind where airport's profit is from airlines, Changi airport makes it really cheap for airlines to fly there, usually just barely covering the cost of what it takes to operate an airport, where they get their money is from the shops inside the airport, thus they have to make the airport appealing to travellers so they will spend their money there, combined with the relatively central location in South East Asia, it makes Singapore extremely competitive

It's a huge contrast in passenger experience if you arrive in Singapore via air (usually by Changi Airport) vs via coach, with many coaches heading to Golden Mile Tower/Complex shopping centre (as many coach companies have their offices there), 2 rather decrepit buildings with choked toilets & yellowed i.e. heavily oxidixed false ceilings (which collapsed over the taxi stand a few days ago).They're also relatively more sleazy with a significant number of nightclubs there, some of which were raided several weeks ago for violating CoViD-19 laws (which ban nightclub & bars from operating unless they're doing restaurant business instead). A possible reason for such disrepair is that the buildings' ownership are split across multiple landlords (so as to be able to attract more investment. These are legally known as "strata titled" properties), whose individual interests are less likely to align with that of the entire property (unlike for buildings owned by a single landlord) e.g. landlords are more willing to rent out to more sleazy businesses e.g. nightclubs, massage parlours, and are less willing to fork out more funds for large-scale property renovations

I love flying turkish all mid east airlines have great cabins but Turkish concentrates on one really important airline issue: food. Food is remembered,makes you feel more satisfied when you eat good during your experience. Plus they sell you in flying to turkey in the future no matter why your flying turkish at the time they know they handle a lot of connecting passengers from a lot of coach share flights with passe hers never considering turkish till their chosen airline puts them in a Turkish airlines plane the airline makes money and adds another destination without actually flying there but Turkish gets more they get a piece of the cash they get to sell you on visiting turkey they get to sell you on their cabin products basically you get to try their cabin products without buying the Turkish airlines ticket and they want to take that opportunity to show you how good it is to fly on Turkish I'll get the food how good the entertainment how good the service so that next time you're looking to fly that same router a different one you might just go through Turkish airlines

My mother used to live in Dubai. As such, I’ve flown emirates a few times, to visit her. The thing that surprised me wasn’t how good it was to fly emirates, but how normal it was. There’s no doubt that business and first class in an emirates plane are amazing, but I only ever flew economy. And I gotta say, it seemed to me a pretty normal and average experience. Sure, it’s comfortable, but it’s also a long distance flight, and it offers about the same amount of comfort as any other airline that flies long distance.

This is so true! I was booking my flight from the UK to Japan, and originally I wanted to do a direct flight to Japan. But then I realised that Qatar were the number 1 airline, with supposedly the best leg space in economy, decent food, their stopover in Doha would shave off nearly 60% from a direct flight, and it's basically a free chance to experience a glimpse of another fascinating country, eat some real food, stretch legs, maybe even have a shower if that's possible before getting on the night flight. Not just that, the timing is just so well thought out, with the option to leave in the UK afternoon, arrive in DOHA and board the second flight near midnight, sleep, then wake up with minimal jet-lag around Japan afternoon time, and arrive in Japan near the evening time.

In Africa, Turkish and Emirates use in some destinations direct flights, involving usually two airports. Usually, they put the last destination as the final destination, but in practice fly to it via the first stop. Take the route with Turkish to Libreville, Gabon. The first stop is Kinshasa, DRC, and after the layover, the flight goes to Libreville before turning back to Istanbul. It is quite an efficient way on filling up the seats.

Great video! I'm a very frequent traveller from Europe living in Asia and couldn't agree more to all that has been said in the video. I used to travel between Asia and Europe at least once a month and used Emirates whenever possible. Back then I had to fly in Economy, but still got to Emirates Gold status. I think @Dan, that this is another advantage of the Middle Eastern carriers: you need less miles to get to a status and they are more generous with time frames etc. then e.g. Star Alliance. I got upgraded to Business Class very frequenzly back then because of my status and was always happy about the break in between the two flights (to sip some champagne in the lounge for free ;-) ). Now I'm usually flying Business Class and for me it is all about the ticket price. If the direct flight is cheaper I definitely take it. I think Business Class is pretty much manageable on all airlines, so prefer to save the buck ;-)

The only point missing is: the current situation. Passengers would pay to fly non stop than connect, especially due to safety reasons. Eg: People would fly Newark to Mimbai over New York to Mumbai via Dubai. If they go non stop, they only need to wait in queue for immigration once. DXB is a mess with no social distancing. This is a way ME carriers are non profitable. Keep up the good work Dan!! I enjoy your aviation analysis videos alot. Live from Bahrain!

Congratulation Dan, what a nice video. But I feel like you missed one of the main airline behind this hub strategy nowadays, Ethiopian Airlines. Because most of these middle eastern airlines have at least a pretty attractive hub on its own, particularly Emirates and Turkish with Istanbul and Dubai being popular destinations. On the other side Ethiopian’s hub, Addis Ababa is absolutely not famous. With the hub strategy they are now able to fly more than 120 aircrafts to literally all the continents. Who would have ever thought of a flight connecting Sao Paulo to Addis Ababa or Jakarta Addis Ababa, all of that is now possible. Like the middle eastern airlines, I think they were also forced to offer a better product cause at the end they won where Kenya Airways failed...

Interesting. I would like to add that the connecting airport plays an important role in these airlines. I have to say this: When I took Emirates for the first time, I couldn’t stop blabbing abt it and then all my friends were like OMG imma take it too. It’s so magnificent and incomparable to other European or US carriers. On top of that, the central hubs of these airlines give so much importance to passengers taking their national carrier that it’s almost creating some sort of jealousy because of the lounges and perks that those passengers get. And thats not all, the importance they give to their passengers is unimaginable. It creates a sort of home feel in the sky. The airport to the hospitality and the aircraft and catering just makes you want to take it whenever you can.

@@ChineduOpara ofc they do. Myself I am black and I usually fly with Emirates from Nairobi or Addis Ababa so yes they definitely do regardless of your race. And on top of that, most people that fly with them from those destinations are African and a pretty large portion of them are Muslim. It all depends which class you choose to fly in but Emirates offers movies on every seat on their head planes, they even have some of the latest releases… and the catering is really good according to me, the food is always fresh also in every class. Overall, they are a really good airline and offer a good experience both in the air and in their airport… so I suggest you try it out!
