I read a comment regarding someone who poured nettle tea on a hornet sting on their palm. It took away the pain almost instantly!

@@vapoureyes it works so fast, wonderful. I take a leaf, chew it up and put that on the sting right away. Just put something on it to hold it there. I got a hornet sting and ran to the plantain, and immediately put it on there. Within minutes the pain is gone. We use it for tick bites to stop the itching. I also make a salve with it.

It was really interesting to hear you talk about plantain Terri - years ago, my lovely mare Nelly used to eat big patches of plantain - it was her favourite area of the paddock! Now I realise that she ate it when she had a dry cough from dusty hay, or when she had a digestive problem (she could be very 'windy' bless her!). Who knows, maybe the plantain even saved her from developing a colic! Animals are so clever at self-selecting what's good for them aren't they!

I live Hawai’i also Sandra and recently have been noticing all of the plantain growing here. I have sinus issues from the vog so am grateful she mentioned using it medicinally for this. It’s nice to hear someone talking about plantain. I first heard about this plant many years ago and what we have here in Canada is something called broadleaf plantain. Looks completely different from the one you have, but does the same thing. It grows in all kinds of areas and is easily overlooked as a weed.

Proof that our machines are listening to us? I was asking the missus a couple of days ago (on the phone) to keep an eye out for plantago major while she was out an about in the countryside. We have ample narrow leaf close by, but there are some moist shady patches where having broad leaf plantain growing alongside of our viola sororia would be nice. This was the first medicinal herb that I ever became acquainted with, when at the age of seven or so, I nearly lost a couple of fingers. We were deep in the woods, constructing a meeting hall for outdoorsmen - just a pole barn with a sheet metal roof, really - when one of the scrap pieces slid off of the roof, and chopped into my hand. One of the gentlemen in attendance quickly produced yarrow, horsemint (monarda punctata grows wild in the Ozarks), and plantago. He stopped the bleeding, cleaned the wound, and had it patched up in no time .. and by the time we managed to get to a 'doctor', the wound had already knitted. I guess yarrow was the first herb, technically .. but it was the plantain that accelerated the healing to near miraculous levels.

In Firenze there is a statue of a wild boar( it brings you good fortune to stroke it) and underneath its feet there is a plantago lanciolata( lanciolata means with the shape of a spear) because people used to eat it with the roasted wild boar. In north of Italy it's used to make a syrup to smooth a bad coughing. I love this plant as much as dandelion and nettle. They are alway welcome in my pitch.

What an interesting story - and I too would use it for bad coughs - among other things. Many people may not have noticed the Plantain at the feet of the boar. Would people still eat it with roasted boar meat I wonder? xx

I recently found your channel and love the Irish wisdom of the herbs and plants in your garden.I love Plantain, I make a wonderful salve with it with yarrow flowers.I also just caught the before and after video of your lovely garden. I follow Collette and her amazing garden and was thrilled to hear that you visited her and she advised you to just start, all that time ago. I live in Australia and recently came upon the Hawthorn at my daughters place, so we asked permission and harvested some flowers for a flower essence as there were no berries yet, though she assured me they are prolific and the birds disperse them along the waterways and her garden. So seeing it on the very first video I found of yours and its full of fairy magic and is beneficial for the heart and courage, really made me enthused to make the tincture next time I go back to visit her when the berries are out. I'm in NC, USA and have both Lanceolata and Major in my yard. I've used both successfully for wound healing - amazing! I immediately pop a leaf in my mouth and chew it to a pulp, quickly apply it to the slash on my finger from my pruners,, and within a minute the bleeding and pain subside. I reapply several times off and on the first day and overnight under a bandaid and the healing is 3x faster than usual with none of the soreness or thick scabbing.

We used to also see a broad leafed plantain growing around old home sites in rural Tennessee. Colloquially it was called "grenadier's boot" and also "Devil's Shoe string." The younger leaves we used in salads, but the bigger the leaves, the more bitter..for sure. We have the broad leaf variety here in Ontario where I live. It is actually a beautiful plant. Very lush. I have made a salve and should make some more. I’m sure it would be good for any kind of first aid and certainly sunburn, which I do try harder not to get than I did when I was younger. I know the native Canadians have used it as a poultice for wounds. I love my weeds. I have a good sized property and try to keep things fairly tidy, but not extreme. I love when mullein just pops up somewhere. I’ve used that to make a tincture though I haven’t had to use it yet. I have thistles growing tall in a few spots and I can’t being myself to destroy them in a nod to my Scottish grandpa. I no longer yank up my beloved dandelions. I meant to infuse some petals in coconut oil but forgot. Next year. My dad eats purslane and lamb’s quarters and my grandma talked about how they did that during the war.

This has been my goto herb for many years. It is great for insect bites, fevers, and tooth infections! Tried & tested with so many ailments or wounds. It goes into my shingles lotion along with lemon balm and chamomile. Added bonus is that the leaves are fabulous in salads or on sandwiches. Perhaps a little bitter but my adjective is green. It just tastes green. 💚

I make a salve from plantain. I am a caregiver in home health, one of my clients underwent some radiation, she has colon cancer. When her week treatment was done her bum was raw, beet red and peeling...she was so sore and could hardly sit. I gave her some of my salve to use...within s half hour, she looked at me and said, " what a releif!" I left it with her to use and when I was there the next week I checked her and she was completely well.

​@Jessica Emmel In West Virginia, the locals pronounce it 'Plantun'....with the T being softly pronounced. It was actually while staying in WV, that I learned about this amazing herb. Some of the older folks there cook up a big pot of the leaves and eat them like turnip greens. While I was there my cat was stung by a yellow jacket....thankfully I had just boiled down some of the leaves. I quickly mixed a tablespoon with some goat milk powder.....she lapped it down and the bee venom didn't give her one bit of a problem!!

Yesterday I mistakenly grabbed a stinging nettle -- I didn't know what it was. What a strange sting! A few feet away was some plaintain. I chewed a few leaves and applied it to my hand. They say that the plants growing around you are the plants you need; we have tones of herb roberts and horse tail! We also have plantain and lots of more many wonderful herbs; this year I did 3 weeks of dandelion stems (about 10) that you chew, I really felt my liver and gallbladder working. Love and light

This video has just come to me at the right time. I wanted to make a balm using plantain, but could not find the particular plant with the long narrow leaves anywhere round where I live. The council and the housing association are both very thorough when it comes to anything weed-like. So I have ordered some seeds and will grow these wonders myself and plant them out to enrichen the area and my garden, and my health. Thank you for this great and informative video.

This is such valuable information! I love that you are educating people to rethink the wild plants in gardens as a resource for healing. In my garden, I keep that mindset and am always happy to learn more about the plants I have growing here. One of the things I would like to know is, would the broadleaf variety of plantain have similar properties? While I do have a few of the narrow leaf plantain here and there, I have mostly the broadleaf variety.

Wow.. what a fantastic video. I am a gardener and l think the longer you spend in nature the more you become sensitive to plants and their healing properties. I obviously have to weed in the gardens I tend but I just feel that there are no weeds only herbs and each one is precious. I definitely learned watching this and your husband's experience is proof of the efficacy of plantain. I will definitely be using plantain in the future and it was kind of you to share this knowledge . Thank you

Sounds like you have Plantago major, the broad leaf Plantain but they are interchangeable.
