Interesting question. Well in my case I wish i spoke only one language. My parents made me learn too many of them because each of my parents and grandparents are from a different country, and now i have no idea what my main language is, i have no idea from what country i am because i grew up in too many and i have no idea what my culture is. Speaking many languages is not such a blessing i can assure you of that. I speak 13 languages fluently and more often than not, it is actually a huge problem. The biggest problem is that languages are the reflection of cultures and cultures are sometimes (often) antagonistic). When you learn the languages on your own YOU are still at the core of those languages with one culture and your acquired language, barely affect your culture (although it does affect it to some extend) but when you were immersed for a long period of time in the cultures of the languages you learned, then eventually you become the product of antagonistic cultures and this can literally create a dichotomy in your personality (medically speaking it can create split personalities and render you borderline or fully schizophrenic). I speak languages from Europe (western and eastern) , Africa (northern), the Middle East, Scandinavia and Asia, i was raised by people with origins as diverse as Arabic, Icelandic, Norwegian, Japanese, Amazigh, Chinese, Russian, Scottish, Jewish, Persian, Indian, Greek etc,... so i was immersed in christianism, buddhist, shintoism, hinduism, jainism, islam, judaism, orthodoxy, coptic, norse , greek cultures among others, and many of those cultures are completely antagonistic so i was con stantly forced to revisit my beliefs, because for instance the Jain and zen buddhist and hinduist beliefs of veganism were against the other belief of islam, judaism and christianism. one of my great grand parents had never eaten anything of animal origin in her life and nobody in her family while my other great grandfather hunted for fun, and i was raised by either during a long period of time and was expected to get inspired by their cultures. One of my bcousins in scandinavia is LGBT and i was raised by my mother in the belief that this is the most natural thing in the world,. while on the arabic and russian sides of my family LGBT people were only deemed worth prison or death and i was expected to pick a team. Same with animals rights, women rights, foreigners rights, what it means to be a man in one culture as opposed to another, what faith or lack of faith to adhere to, what culture to call my own, what language to consider the reflection of my true self as opposed to something acquired and just peripherical, like orbiting around my true self. None of this was possible until i became an adult and worked on it for over 15 years of living on my own, completely cut off from my family to avoid any "cultural or linguistic contamination". I would give anything to have been taught just one language and one culture. The problem remains that i still can't figure out the one i would have liked it to be. And don't even get me started on dating and being in a relationship, when you are a patchwork of so many things, it is almost impossible to find a match. No wonder i work in nature with animals and picked up a profession which requires zero language skills. n or death and i was expected to pick a team. A little suggestion, it might be good to reword the question you ask about what they think about the city in their language (6:22) because similar to a girl in the Paris episode, I think sometimes they think you mean "repeat this question to me but in your language". Might be better to phrase it as: "If you can answer this question in [your language], what do you think of life in [the city]?" Amazing video as always!

It is truly wonderful how you get people to open up to you. And always interesting to hear their responses. I haven't looked through the previous comments but I wondered if the Italian women were speaking Mandarin with an Italian accent - nearly all of us retain our native accent when speaking a new language. And great respect to the guy learning ASL. Every once in a while I will surprise someone by speaking in Spanish or French when they least anticipate it. I went to a high-school reunion in northern North Dakota a few days ago and we all went to a Mexican restaurant for dinner. I said something to one of the servers in Spanish; she responded in Spanish. It was only a few words but a classmate was taken aback that I had simply switched.
