A bit about me,
I am a 27 year old runner from South Australia. I focus on long distance trail running and have completed 10 ultra marathons since I took up running 3 years ago after having a long history of chronic ilness. I wanted to combine my love of running and documenting things and the result is me making these videos/vlogs about my training, races, opinions and experiences as well as some of my everyday life outside of running.

"I still don't feel I deserve it (when you are talking about the support you get on Instagram, KZbin,...)": You deserve Every bit of support you get and should get even more. It's not only the fact That you are a fascinating person talking about a sport I love myself, but on top of That your videos are super high quality. Not just the 1000th Guy on KZbin just filminformatie himself and talking about his races. Keep it up! You were a big inspiration for me when I ran my first ever marathon a week ago!

Reassuring to hear you feel bust up, ok let me qualify that. I am a 46 year old bloke and I tend to have this paranoia about time making its eventual impact on my physical robustness and so focus in probably too much on DOMS and post race aches, but listening to yourself just gave me rational view again, in that no one can run up and down hills / mountains for several hours and feel great the next day and ready to go again. Love your content and your photography is on another level - thanks!

Way to go Dan with the sponsorship!! I almost bought a Krar vest but now will check out the CamelBak before I proceed. Thanks Dan. Fantastic as always. Particularly enjoyed the last part where you kindly shared your reasons for your pacing improvements. We’ve all been that guy who dies a slow death towards the end of races! So to hear your tips on what you’ve changed is very helpful. Hey Dan. I just thought I’d drop you a quick message with the end result of my marathon at the weekend. I’m delighted to say that I ran a brilliant race & came home in 3hrs 35mins. Not a personal best, however, it was the best & most enjoyable run I’ve ever had. And one I learned so much from. Because of what you said last week, I decided to really keep an eye on my pacing with the plan being to start steady & finish quick. Because of this I ran a 10 minute negative split. Something I’ve never even came close to in the past. None of it would’ve been possible had you not posted last weeks video. Thanks mate 👍🏻

Seriously Dan, your material is brilliantly put together and makes for great watching. Great shots, locations, advice, delivered in the chilled and very ‘listenable’ way. Thanks for all the time and work you put into these videos, it’s worth it from this end. Finally, importantly, what’s the best filling for a burrito in your opinion?? Thinking of pre race ideal foods.
@DanWhitehead
@DanWhitehead 6 жыл бұрын
ioanparry no worries at all mate glad your enjoying them... Best burrito filling sheesh that's tough! I love some seasoned roasted cauliflower with some spinach avocado and aioli coriander lime etc. Or black beans rice avocado and hot sauce is always good. Alot of times I like to just have oats with berries for dinner the night before just because I know it always digests well and then I have the same thing for breakfast. Having said that I've eaten all kinds of things before race because im always travelling so its usually a case of the best option that's available
@ioanparry
@ioanparry 6 жыл бұрын
+Dan Whitehead very nice, especially the black bean option, cheers for the tip. Also thinking oats/porridge and fruit is a good option, definitely race morning. Got the peanut butter lined up for afters of course. Really chuffed for you on the call up from Camelbak, rightly deserved. All the hard work is clearly paying off for you Dan, hope it continues and you get more calls! The Alpinamente sunnies I bought recently are brilliant too, cheers for the heads up on those and the code!

Some good advice there on how to check your effort! Coming from a sprinting background I’m so used to pushing out hard from the start. Over this winter, I really focused in on slowing down the earlier parts of a run and moving faster in the second half. Really have been enjoying my training with the switch and looking forward to some races here soon where I can really put it to use. Fresh video per usual💪🏾

Ohh the art of pacing. So many factors that can affect our running, we have to be mentally strong to ignore the rest and do our thing but true is sometimes we are carried out by the emotions, is inevitable. Listening to ourselves, how the body responds with every foot step, every food bite, how is coping the weather and the sense of fatigue or not.. just keep going, I also don't think about the position as long as I accomplish to get to the finishing line :) Great video man! love the family bday celebration, even you had a piñata. Brought me some of my childhood memories.

I so often run with friends, and we've all got a different style. I'd rather start out slow, fuel well and crack on later when I know its in the bag. It's always chasing my mates that does me. Best results have always been when I'm on my own. It's a funny old game of strategy when you're chasing your own times.

Good advice about maintaining effort for an hour. It makes me smile when I hear you talk about sponsorship - you deserve it. Well the hell did you get your recent package from with the pro strider 5s? My size always vanishes from Patagonia
@DanWhitehead
@DanWhitehead 6 жыл бұрын
Matt Graham thanks Matt running warehouse mate I over pay for them because our dollar is weaker then the us and shipping is expensive but it's literally the only place that ever has stock. It's so annoying how the Patagonia site never has stock of anything! I don't know how that works

Dan Whitehead cheers Dan, I thought you were buying overseas. I even go in to the Patagonia store in Sydney and they have no idea why they never get stock of them. They get 4 pairs of each size. I run in mine, then wash them in the shower and hang em out to dry on repeat. Thanks for replying mate

Hi Dan. I'm just wondering where you buy your Patagonia Strider shorts? Patagonia Australia doesn't seem to stock them at the moment. Do you get them from overseas?

Digging your video's Dan, really insightful stuff. I'm about to order my first pair of Altra Lone Peaks, currently running in Salomon Sense Pro and Sense Mantra 3's. Any tips for transitioning to zero drop with the least amount of grief? Keep up the awesome work!!

Phil Wilesmith hey Phil for me I just started running in them with no transition period and I was fine but everyone's different try them see how you feel if your getting sore calfes etc. They include a suggested transition strategy in the shoe box I'd follow thay

Hey quick question Dan, when you capture your running clips (like at 7:00) do you take your DSLR out with you, you have something more compact / lightweight? I am trying to do some running videos on my own channel from the west country of the UK, but I really suck :) Not that it matters too much as its just a hobby, but learning so much from watching your content, it's incredibly crisp and pleasant to watch..Your videos seem to relax me and I look forward to watching them.

Luke Hinds yeh I always shoot on my big camera after I've ran because my loop I run is a short stretch I always come back to the car so I can grab my camera and film something quickly. I need to work out a more compact solution for Europe as my car won't be at the top of the mountains!
@TheLukejitsu
@TheLukejitsu 6 жыл бұрын
Oh cool, you're planning a Europe trip? If you come to the UK check out 'fell running' in the north of the UK - farmer Joss Naylor and the Double Bob Graham. Salomon have a nice short video called 'Of Fells and Hills ' you can search and watch on here. Fell running is basically running over mountains, its been part of the local culture in the peak district for a few hundred years Would love to see you film your experience running up there, its gods own garden mate.

Awesome video as always dan, You inspire me to push my running more and more. Quick question, Im heading to Melbourne on thursday (from nz) for a week before heading to Europe for the summer, do you have any recommendations for places/trails to run there?
@DanWhitehead
@DanWhitehead 6 жыл бұрын
darkfreqnz good to hear mate.. as far as I know your best bet would be getting out to the dandenongs I've never ran there myself so can't really tell you what it's like but that's deff the place to go for trails close to melbourne. Depending on where your staying though it could be a bit of a hike to get there.

Hey Dan, great job as always! What headphones do you have on at about the 7: 00-minute mark in this video? They appear to be bluetooth, but I was just curious. I run with some bluetooth headphones now, but they have a cord that connects them and it's always bouncing around. I hate them. Thanks man!

Andy Prentice thanks Andy I get them from running warehouse so basically I pay an arm and a leg haha Patagonia never have stock on their website which is annoying. It's worth paying a little extra to me though as they work perfectly and last me a long time. Nothing worse then buying expensive running gear only to not like it and never wear it so at least I know I get a heap of use out them

Hi Dan, I do all my training in Timps but was thinking about getting some superiors or lone peaks for race days? Are they drastically different? Would you choose one for longer distance races and one for short? Ta
@DanWhitehead
@DanWhitehead 6 жыл бұрын
Jack Iffla hey Jack you won't notice much difference between timps and lone peaks in terms of cushioning I've found the extra cushion in the timp flattens out pretty quick. Lone peaks are my favorite for sure I use them for training and racing. The superiors are great deff feel more minimal which isn't really my thing lone peaks are good middle ground
