Danyiba kaka, 1974

I am posting this video from 1974 just to highlight bɔbɔbɔ as it was played at the time. The last few seconds of the clip show the indefatigable Nuatrɔ, perhaps the godfather of bɔbɔbɔ, in his best elements, directing his group. Even though he sang and danced himself, he could always be seen in front of the group, conducting it as an orchestra. He was simply great!
Note that his type of bɔbɔbɔ was very fast and certain sounds dominated. The aɖonɖo was prominent in a way it no longer is. You could hear it distinctly. Anyway the bass drum was not as varied as they play it today.
They don't play bɔbɔbɔ like that anymore. But that is how popular music is - it changes and our beloved bɔbɔbɔ has also changed over time. I don't know what the great impressario himself will say about today's bɔbɔbɔ.
Personally, I like the new bɔbɔbɔ too especially what was done by the late Efo Senyo. The old one is nostalgic for us too but the new sounds are nice. Fortunately for us bɔbɔbɔ lives on and on and on...
