They also get a bit of red Astaxanthin powder when their guts look empty. Thanks for an another interesting video with great production values. The inclusion of your Antarctic footage was fun too. Have you ever considered collecting and cultivating Branchiopoda from Antarctica? NB -- This question should not be construed as conspiracy to break any international treaties! 🙂

I love that you're branching out on to other microfauna! This kit seems well thought-out at first, but if you think about it a bit more, it's not really too well thought-out. The first thing that struck out to me was the fact that the thermometer's range doesn't even fit the daphnia's whole range, so it's useless if you want to use it to tell you if it's cold enough to use the heating pad, so that seems like a weird oversight because it's not like there aren't any sticker thermometers that go down low enough. The next thing that I thought of was food. I guess if you're using them as feeders, it might not be a big deal because you can likely just seed the tank with algae from your main tank, but still. I do like that they included the heating pad, tannins, airline tubing, pipette, and net though. That's more thought to the comfort and longevity of the animals than Sea Monkey kits that don't even accomodate for airline and heaters. As for tank-mates, do you think triops would be a good idea? I'd love to see other similar animals and even more videos with these little guys. Cool vid as always, man!
@pico-cosmos
@pico-cosmos Жыл бұрын
Yeah those are some good point. It kinda feels like that they just threw a bunch of accessories into the box without too much consideration for them. The website doesn’t even say that this kit comes with a heat pad - and when I asked them about it they said it wasn’t supposed to be included in the kit 🤷‍♂️ I dunno lol. I’m not sure about Triops! It’s a good question though. Maybe they’re eat the Daphnia?

@@pico-cosmos it sounds like the customer service team don't know much about the r&d for the products and I'm questioning the company's internal communications lol. also good point about the triops. I am interested in small freshwater animals like daphnia, but I do not think I'd buy a kit because these kinds of animals will just appear for you in water you leave outside. You can also get started on your infusoria by heading out to your local pond and grabbing a little handful of the damp mucky stuff near the edge (you'll likely get some little animals too--yay!). Tannins are an important part of freshwater systems. If you have the time and interest, look up "Blackwater Aquarium". The tannins you poured in that colored the water in a way you didn't quite like does look a little out of place in this tank, but it looks right at home in a blackwater aquarium. If you keep up with your daphnia and other freshwater animals, consider how you might create a setup that doesn't require water changes at all.

This company long been selling eggs of different little creatures, they are a bit high priced for me as I pay about 15cents for a live culture, but one day I will try them out.

I have an interesting story about daphnia,I had gotten some fairy shrimp eggs,once they arrived I set up a tank for them,they hatched and I did everything right,did not even over feed them,but for some reason each one passed,however for some reason tons of daphnia were in the tank,maybe they accidently put some in there,or got some when they harvested the fairy shrimp eggs.
@pico-cosmos

That is interesting! Perhaps they inhabit the same vernal pool that they collected the eggs from. I’ve seen some websites that sell Fairy Shrimp & Triops eggs - it’s not uncommon for them to also have other species mixed in there too

In my Zoology classroom at Gallaudet University, I did dissecting a bull frog under the large microscope then I finally noticed a zigzag pattern of something. Then I discovered that it turned to be an adult daphnia swimming in “ Go- Go” dance in the Petri dish in close-up in careful observation under the large laboratory microscope. I was only one college student who found a daphnia however all of other college students found none. Then I told my woman college professor of Zoology about an adult daphnia in the Petri dish under the large microscope in my careful observation. She wouldn’t believe it!!

I once had a daphnia colony that i got when an aquatics store gave me an algae sample. They thrived for a few months before dying out, likely due to me not knowing how to raise specifically Daphnia
@pico-cosmos

Have you given them names xD? I would definitely be interested in this kit but I'm still debating whether to keep them as pets or to breed them for possible fish food. I do know they sell dried Daphnia as snacks for Betta fish, and would probably be a good food source for Triops too. But these guys are kinda cute and I'd probably feel bad if I were to use them for food for other animals 🥺. Then again, the other animals also need to eat 😅.
@pico-cosmos
@pico-cosmos Жыл бұрын
Haha there are too many to give them names.. plus they all kinda look identical 😅 you could always raise them as pets and then just remove a few to feed to your fish. I’ve heard it’s actually quite healthy for the Daphnia colony too because the population doesn’t get too dense

Hi! I have a question about sea monkeys and lighting, will grow lights for the algae be sufficient for the sea monkeys as well? I am thinking about keeping them in my bathroom which has a stable warm temperature, but weak fluorescent lighting😅 I really enjoy watching your videos, it inspired me to get the mars tank!🤩

No idea how much chlorine is in the spring water - but I assume basically none? Water volume doesn’t really matter. Anything larger than 200ml is adequate

I would get daphnia (but they are too small), I hope they make the bigger species that you talked about before for pets, also, I can’t seem to ever get my sea monkeys to have live birth (and to mate, but they did mate a few times soooo) maybe it’s because I’m in the uk? And the uk is cold like 24/7?
