The tender height being slightly lower than the locomotive makes sense to me, it's representing a tender weighed down with coal & water, while the one in the NRM is completely empty.

Where was your dad working out of on the Southern Region? Reading? I think that a lot of D Class locos congregated around Reading then. My grandad's best friend was a British expat who worked out of Eastleigh in the 1950s. He operated one of the U Class Moguls on trains until it was withdrawn in 64. Passed away in 2017. I sure do miss the old boy.

@@zerosen1972 my Dad was at Gilligham/New Brompton Shed (Kent) 73D. They had a couple of D class, five or six C class some H class and three or four LCDR/SECR R/R1 (0-4-4t, very similar to the H class), and several visiting locos that were U, U1, Z, N, N1, N15 (King Arthur class) plus the odd E/E1 as well as D1 class as well, the occasional Bulleid WC, MN and Q1. He left to become a Marine Engineer in 1953 by which time the writing was very much on the wall for the Eastern Section as the juice was being pushed through to the coast. In truth he got to play with all the good stuff that the Southern and SECR had apart from the Lord Nelson, he saw them on visits to Stewarts Lane and Nine Elms but never got to handle or fire one. He came into contact with several of the former LBSCR machines but again it was but a fleeting contact at Bricklayers Arms (The Brick) shed. Hope that helps.

Hi sam, loved the video! I think one reason for such a high price may actually be because of the rails partnership. Because of this, rails sold the locomotive at the rrp, rather then 10 or 20 pounds lower as most retailers do with these sort of models. For example, the hattons genesis coaches and the hornby ones have the same rrp, but the hornby ones are cheaper at retailers by about 5 pounds due to the price reduction.
@MrShepardDog3 жыл бұрын
200 GBP for a loco that can barely pull three coaches? Weak plastic hand rails, the cab roof fell off, and the whole thing is made of lightweight plastic? No thanks! A much better deal -- and a loco from this era with stunning good looks -- is Hornby R3544 LNER B12. All METAL die-cast body, pickups on all the gloriously painted wheels, two flywheels -- it's the one that you called "superb", "phenomenal" and "stunning", and gave 8.84 rating score. Very pleased with how thorough and consistent your reviews have become - you definitely deserve recognition for that... and with the number of subscribers you have, I guess you are getting that recognition. I don't really agree with you about traction tires. But then I do much of my modelling in N gauge, where traction tends to be a more major issue... and locos just aren't much use to me if they can't pull a reasonable train up a decent incline. Absolutely agree that good weight is a better option... but I'd rather have traction tires than have a loco that can't pull a few coaches or wagons up a modest incline.

Dapol had clearly put a standard on the tender-locomotive coupling system : now, you've got them and the others. Same for the DCC decoder installation. They can do pretty nice things at Dapol's, but the weight and the discrepancy between then tender and the locomotive footplate height is a silly thing missed in conception. For the finish, the detached parts, the coal load and the chimney top are an insult to anyone who bought it at this Bachmann-like price. Anythying else is top notch, that saves the day. For the performances, the drivetrain is well made, except for the lack of flywheel, inacceptable for GBP 200. And also, the traction tyres installed by default is an unacceptable feature, I'm part of the 88%. But, anyway, replacing the axle with the traction tyres is a real drag, Dapol missed something here. Especially when you see that the pulling power is not really down the drain without traction tyres, even if it's not exceptionnal. 50 grams more weight in the locomotive would not be a luxury... Not a shelf queen, but you won't be able to do more than 2/3 coaches local trains in exploitation without the tyres. Agreed with your rating. As is, GBP 150 is an acceptable RRP. If they correct all the points I have listed, they can ask for GBP 200 in my opinion. Dapol can, and have (43xx Mogul) done excellent things, they ought to be more consistent in their products range. When the brand new Bachmann V2 will be out, I will be highly interested in your review. The price is roughly the same...
@FormallyknownasE1003 жыл бұрын
Agree completely. The height is rather unfortunate. I would have liked to have seen a quick shot without the tyres on just to double check.
@SamsTrains3 жыл бұрын
Yeah it seems so... wonder if the different tenders are interchangeable?! Some say the height discrepancy was intentional... but intentional or not, it's inappropriate for the preserved example represented by my example, so I insist I was right to mention it! xD It is a pity about the price - had it been lower, it would have matched the model far better! Overpriced, overly fragile and a stupid mechanism, I rather have the DCC Socket in the tender than taking up room in the smoke box/boiler. That way you can get more weight over the front drivers, something Hornby got right on their D16/3 4-4-0 - however someone at the factory decided not to fit the fly wheeled motor (same as the K1) which the chassis was tooled to make, which lessened the performance slightly. It's a simple transplant too.
@SamsTrains3 жыл бұрын
It's a tricky thing though - the DCC socket is in the front of the boiler/smokebox... so any extra weight there would make the loco front-heavy and unbalanced. I love the clever DCC fitting solution... but it did work better in the Mogul where there was enough space for a flywheel too. A flywheel in this model would have improved performance and also the weight! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

It is a lovely locomotive. But I had the same issue with bits coming off. The first was a buffer, removed because of a buffer-locking incident. It seems to be an issue with Dapol. My layout is littered with B4 steps that have fallen off.
@conistonoldman3 жыл бұрын
I don't model the SECR, though I have been a fan of Edwardian railways most of my life, particularly the LNWR. But I fell in love with the curves of the Wainwright D class from when I first saw photos of it as a lad (before I fell properly in love with curves of a different kind). So I had to have the Locomotion version. Yes, the price is a bit eye-watering for a DC analogue, British outline loco, but it's a one-off and not much different to the forthcoming LNWR Precedent, which is another "must have" for me personally. I haven't had a chance to test run the model yet, but it won't be required to be a workhorse on my layout. Its mainly for show. And what a show! On appearance it's an absolute stunner. The model perfectly (apart from the slight discrepancy in loco/tender solebar heights, though not as obvious on mine at normal viewing distance) captures the flowing lines and personality of the real thing and the level of finish and detail, particularly the lining ad lettering, is superb. Regarding the chimney cap, a photo of Class D No. 470, in 1906, "resplendent in all the glory of Wainwright brightwork" as Rixon Bucknall says in his book "Our Railway History" first published in 1944, clearly shows the chimney cap in a darker shade than the dome and whistle. The only quibbles I had on unboxing were that the spare crankpins and tool were loose in the packaging and almost got immediately lost and the poorly fitting and not particularly realistic coal load was loose. Everything else is in place and tight on mine. So, from my experience, there's very little to take issue with on quality. I expect the weight/traction tyre issue is part of a complex design trade-off between the need to squeeze gizmos into the small space and cost. Given the amount of hand-finishing that must have been required at the factory to achieve the quality and detail and the relatively small runs of the large number of variants, I don't feel the £199 price is very excessive, although it is high. I was tempted by the DCC sound version but I simply can't justify the additional cost of that. I mainly model Swiss HO and HOm and 200 quid would rarely buy a Swiss electric loco which is basically a plastic box on powered bogies with much less complexity.

Not with bits dropping off before he got it out of the box, and then the cab roof coming off and loose handrails, for £200 give or take, I would rather have a O gauge 08.

A much better deal is Hornby R3544 LNER B12. All METAL die-cast body, pickups on all the gloriously painted wheels, two flywheels -- it's the one Sam called "superb", "phenomenal" and "stunning", and gave 8.84 rating score. And -- the price is only L 145!
@SamsTrains3 жыл бұрын
That's right - had it been all metal, 100% perfect, and packed with features, then it may just about have been worth it... but this just wasn't. Mr ShepardDog's right... Hornby's B12 is a real benchmark engine, and it's far cheaper... yet far larger, and almost entirely metal! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Truely a gorgeous loco Sam. You did an amazing job reviewing it. I was looking of getting one myself but the SECR Wainwright Green and BR Early Versions ran out on Pre Order. £200 from Rails of Sheffield was just a bit too much for my wallet at the time. I'm hoping they will release another wave of these. I already missed out on the SECR P Class so I hope I can grab this up next time.

A couple of points; The 'Westinghouse Pump' on the offside is not a Westinghouse Pump but is the Stirling steam reverser. The prototype had more lining on it than has been depicted but I can understand why it has been left off. Secondly I personally don't like the colour used on the various handrails and smoke box door fittings, it makes them look chromium plated not burnished steel

If a loco is "on the light side, there are ways to make it heavier. Strips (taken from a piece of roofing lead) can ne fitted under the running plate, or hidden anywhere it can help, and not be seen. Brilliant production.👍.

As a person that used to collect diecast cars and trucks, I agree that the amount of diecast should reflect in the price. It's understandable how an excessive amount of weight can hinder the performance of certain models. But it servers no excuse for them to cut broad corners. They should include metal crew figures and cab accessories to act as additional ballast.

Okk, not too related to the video (the loco looks amazing) but... Could you try to fix the bachmann ttte motors whose motors had burnouts? Maybe replacing the old motor with a new one... Sam, you're amazing ;)

I would like to see this on the rolling road with the current draw while running in. Fluctuations or a drift in current upwards or too high a current draw being an indicator of motor problems. I would like this to be a standard test for all your reviews so that your audience will learn a bit more about motors and mechanisms.

Gonna be completely honest. Considering there isn't any Furness Railway K2 locomotives on the market at the moment, this would be a really good model for a custom Edward from TTTE!

Hi Sam i like the Dapol coupel betwwn loco and tender. And the ease to convert to dcc. Maerklin sadly do not have the ease to convert to dcc. When convert to dcc you have to on some models hard wire the dcc. I like Dapol ease to service the model. Keep up the good work.

Excellent review of the Dapol SE&CR D Class Sam 👍👍 But the one thing that I was shocked by was the buffer lose from tender and I’ve just screamed , no seriously, I’ve screamed when the buffer was lose from the model as well the cab roof. I was worried that you will have another bad quality model from Dapol, but unfortunately I don’t like the traction tires on the driving wheels and I personally agree with everyone that it better without them. I also don’t like the fact this model was too light and having more die-cast metal on the running plate will help the model a lot. However one more down point of the model was it price of £200 for a 4-4-0 model as that price would be better on 4-6-2s rather than a small 4-4-0 locomotive.

Hi Sam. Enjoyed your review. Now in receipt of the sound version from Rails. Beautiful little model. Will not be pulling anything, so I am fine with the traction tyres. When I saw the colour of the box, I thought immediately of Hatton’s 66s. What a disaster they were, both what I read and my own personal experience. Bought nine, one arrived without sound and could not be replaced, all sold out. So I received a full refund. Of the remaining eight, six gave me problems. Varying, from wheel wobble, sound failure and complete decoder failure. I hope it was not Dapol that received the commission from Hattons to build the 66s, as I have four 59s on order with Dapol.
