ABOUT SAVE FILES: You can't downpatch saves since that's not how the save patching mechanic works. When developers release an update for the game, they have to ensure your save of your current version supports it, hence your save gets upgraded as you launch the game with the update applied. But there is no support for the other way around. If you want to ensure your saves work through downpatched versions, downpatch the game, make a new save, then back up that save on that version before your uppatch again. That way you'll retain your save on that downpatched version.

Great tutorial, thank you. But unfortunately he's right, it won't work with a current save file. However I thought, what if I just used the current base game files, and an older version of the DLC files? So I copied the current patch base game files into my directory, along with the previous DLC patch files and booted up the game. And, no error! I was able to load my save! I walked into the boss arena and he started walking towards me slowly. And then, he just stood there. And that's all he did. If I walked away he would walk slowly towards me. And then just stand there. I tried rebooting the game a few times to see if anything would change, but no luck. And just to make sure I wasn't crazy, I booted the live game, and he started attacking me. So guys who had not yet beaten the DLC before this patch, it appears we're boned. We will never really beat the game.

i've got the game downpatched now to 1.12.2, the game boots up but it's refusing to acknowledge the DLC, even with the all the DLC files included. i own the game and DLC on steam, any fix for this? EDIT: managed to fix this, turns out the downpatched version won't acknowledge you own the DLC unless you have the up-to-date version installed through steam elsewhere on your computer

I wonder if this is an error with the steam_appid file because that file simply points your downpatched directory to the actual Elden Ring game on Steam, which if you purchased legitimately should work properly.

not sure if youre still checking the comments here, but i needed to downpatch to run the dark moon mod, I've downloaded the downpatched version, moved it to a seperate ssd, and put the mod in there, however when i launch the modded version it still uses the most recent version of elden ring and i cant figure out how to change it

You probably didn't apply the steam_appid textfile. If you did and it doesnt work, ensure its named "steam_appid" and that its a textfile (so not "steam_appid.txt" since it might end up being named "steamapp_id.txt.txt" otherwise which doesn't work (if you are showing file extensions in Windows explorer).

I updated the pastebin with the repo's for 1.13.2, but you are better off using the mod to unnerf Radahn on ver1.14 since if you already upgraded your save, there's no downpatching your save so downpatching is a bit pointless then unless you wanna replay the game.

If this only happens on a downpatch, then this sounds like data corruption due to perhaps improper combination of the downloaded depots. For the DLC, you need to download 3 depots. The main game files, the executable and the DLC files, then combine them into one directory as demonstrated into the video. It could also be your save file, try backing up your save and deleting it, then trying from a new fresh save to see if it still happens. If it still happens, you may have to re-downpatch.

Can't do this on console sadly. If you have a disc version of the game on console, the only version to go back to is v1.00 (Disc release) whichever version is written on your disc out of the factory by removing your Elden Ring updates, but yeah that isn't very useful in your case.

You probably didn't do something right. Verify all the files are in place and combined properly from the downloaded depots. If it doesn't work, check if your current patch copy of Elden Ring does in fact launch so you can rule out other causes than the downpatched version. I'd say if the Current Patch version of the game launches, it's likely something went wrong in the downpatching process.

You either didn't put in the steam_appid text file properly, or you didn't delete your save file. Your save file holds data on the calibration version the game should use. I'd suggest checking your steam_appid text file (it should be a text file called "steam_appid". If you already had file extensions enabled, it might have been named "steam_appid.txt.txt" which doesn't work) or try deleting your save file.

This video doesn't assume compatibility for newer saves on older versions. It's per design that saves on newer versions don't work on old ones because that's not how save upgrading when a new version is released works.

The depots you posted are the same depot versions I used and did not work, I got it from SteamDB. Where you probably also get them(I don't know where else you can get them). Somewhere in the process of downpatching, an error occurs. I have no idea where and why, I followed your guid step by step and tried several times and it did not work. I want to patch down because of mod. After now 9 unsuccessful tries, following your video guide 4 times, written guide 2 times and three times of others I found, I gave up. I currently try to pdate the mod regulation bin to 1.16. Maybe I will succeed or maybe I will fail, but I will not do this down patching stuff again. @daravae do you have any insight to on how to do this for PS5 My game auto-updated from patch 1.12.2 to 1.13 while I was downloading another game I thought I turned of auto updating however that was just for system I fix this after the fact. I never loaded the game because I seen the saved files are still showing the 1.12.2 patch attached to them. I believe that if I just update the game to the previous patch it will be as if nothing ever happen. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Btw I play with the internet disconnected

If you have sufficient storage → on the same drive as Steam is installed ← then you should check if you are performing one depot download at a time and if that's finishing or not. You can only make so many requests to Steam. Otherwise google for "error writing chunk" error in Steam Console for more assistance.
