Thanks for the review. I've been looking around for a 270° awnings for the past 2 months to replace my square pull out awning and I keep coming back to the Darche Eclipse 270° Awning as being the best awning for my needs. It's coverage, covering the back and stretching all the way around and up too the bullbar . . . provides the best coverage from the the rear and the side of My Canopy, and the canopy area I used as My living area. But as you have shown . . . the walls are bulky and take up a heap of storage room, and as I sleep in a swag under my awning . . . I'll probably just continue to use a couple Gazebo Walls to provide privacy in lue of the Darche walls . . . if I need a tent . . . I have a OzTent to fit in with the 270° awning lol.

I have the same awning, I never put the extra poles I don't even know where they are anymore lol. So, only 3 poles 3 guy ropes! I'm looking to get one of the walls tho, so that might add to the setup but I don't know yet. Thanks for the video and for the review!

I have one of these on my square drop camper and it is amazing. The reason for the separate poles is the fact that the beams have to mesh together when its packed up, if you have the poles on the beams you will need to have a bigger space between the top and bottom beam to allow for the pole to be stored up. another reason is the fact that if they were permantly attached the whole package when packed up will be substantially larger. i have one of these awnings and i find it amazing, until i have to pack it up on my own, its still fairly simple though (i just have medical issues that make it slightly more difficult for me).

Great review. Is it possible to partially set it up, say 180 or even just the traditional side awning, if that's all that was needed for that occasion?

It would be so cool if you were able to do this but unfortunately the awning wouldnt be able to support itself as the darche is designed to be in two sections (the front and the rear) to make it a 270. This means that unless it is set up completely it will just sag as it is unable to pull tight. Hope that helps 👍 Thanks heaps for watching!

Totally agree with you, the more crap fixed to your vehicle means the more time it takes to set up and pack up

Great footage, what anchor point did you use to put on the Hilux to make it tough and secure. WE have just bought one and haven't put it up yet and we are getting roof racks and cages for the canopy and the car roof and we need to have a sturdy cage to hold the weight of the awning. Thank you

Our awning is attched to the alloy ARB roof rack. Using the 3 sturdy darche brackets mate

Just a thought, can you store the additional poles with the awning in the cover? Just place them under the velcro straps.

Great idea, we thought the exact same thing. Although there is velcro there for you do this, unfortunately the awning bag is just way to tight to allow them to fit when packed up. This is why they do come seperately. If the bag was made a little bit bigger then i have no doubt they would fit 👍

Spend the extra an go an Ostrich awening, a fair bot more but no poles and set up in minutes. No guy ropes and you can do chin ups on the awening bars so really strong👍

You can also use this awrning free standing wouldn’t in strong wind but normal conditions you can

I would not recommend it personally. Prolonged weight on the rivets and hinges will reuin this awning. Like you said but, you can do it but it's not great

So I bought some orange / white waterproof hardcore light strip and want to mount it like you did. It seems like the arms when stowed away might be to toght and put pressure on the lights. Have you had any issues. Trying to find the exact spot you mounted yours. It’s hard to pause the video in the right place to see the location. Any chance to send me a pic? Close up of the lights with the awning closed but with out the case on?

Good question mate, placed a weather proof led strip at the base of the aluminium back plate the arms with lay straight on top of it. Does your hardcore strip have a bulky outer sleeve? If so you may not be able to leave it inside

We are glad this video helped mate, that's why we made it honest because if you leave out any information people like yourself will be dissapointed with the gear. Some people opt to only use the 3 fixed pole without ropes. But to us that's asking for trouble. Way to much pressure on the aluminium joints. :)

Cheers for the review! I’m about to pull the trigger on this awning for all the reasons you emphasised. Free standing awnings are a cool party trick but poles and guy ropes are what survive bad weather. Have you had much experience with your awning in bad weather? How has it held up when fully secured (guy ropes and poles)

Thanks for watching Matt, sounds like you know what your after. If you happen to get caught out in high winds and rain this unit can be pegged out really well. Alot of poles means short spans between ally tube. We had it set up one night and the wind was near gale force. Made alot of noice but never damaged it.

Great review. Thank you. But it seems like this has as much stuffing around as just getting out my three room tent? Actually I think my tent has less guy ropes. I thought awnings were about simplicity, speed, mobility etc??

90% of the time we only set up the legs and don't worry about the guy ropes. Takes about 2mins to set up.

Theres not alot that differs between the two, Darche just has a slightly thicker canvas and a extra pole. Brackets seem ever so slightly smaller on the 23zero.

The 23Zero 270 awning has one less arm at the back. The Darche has 6 arms

Can I ask what roof rack you use on your arb canopy? Did it need extra support inside?

Its a ARB aluminium roof rack. And the canopy has the 100kgs roof top support bars inside it to allow all the weight up top

That was our Oztent RV-3 it's free standing but slots in very nicely to the gap of the 270!

Yeah its very similar, practically the same thing. Its a shame the darche extender tents dont attach to the 270. Just the standard awnings!

In your opinion, what 270 awning is free standing with light wind? I have heard the Buch 270xt max awning is as well as the Alu Cab, how do you feel about these 2? The Darche Eclipse looks great IMO thanks to your review I see that the poles and some guidelines are needed in minimum. There is always some wind here in South Florida USA

The darche really is awsome because it even packs away so slim and short on your roof rack. I know the alu cab would handle free standing better than the darche. But if there a light wind around would you even risk not guy roping. 1 strong gust could cost the owner $1200AUD. thanks for the question mate 👍

I have one on my Prado. The main issue I have with this awning is the bag. It's way too tight a fit, gee we struggle to get it in the bag. The worst problem is that the bag takes in water and the awning gets wet when you're not using it causing mould. Very annoying

Any awning that isn’t free standing without poles is not worth it IMHO. Spend the extra $$ and get one, like The Bush Company 270 XT, where you don’t need to use poles and guy ropes unless you are in very high winds. Everyday use with any 270 should be simply opening it, enjoying it, and closing it back up……no poles or guy ropes needed 90% of time.

Way too complicated. Separate bag with poles is not what you want in your car. All these poles, lines take too much setup time for overlanding.
