Nice work 👍 If anyone wants to use this paint scheme, I highly recommend you mix a paint pot of this mixture. It'll make your paint job consistent and mean you won't have to do any more mixing thereafter.

I'm relatively new to the whole Warhammer 40k hobby, I love painting figures, and my next army will be a Bad Moons Orks army. So my question, maybe I'm just a bit inexperienced, but how would you mix a paint pot to get the color exactly like in the video? I mean, sure, I could try experimenting until it works, but I'm not sure if I trust myself to potentially ruin two colors completely if I do it wrong because the color scheme looks really amazing.

Learning this was one of those HUGE jumps in my painting career. I'd get so frustrated when blending for highlights and until I realized I was mixing like a cooler highlight with a warmer midtone or something like that I kept getting disappointed considering my blending had gotten pretty smooth. Just mixing the right shade of a highlight color (I.e. a warm skin tone with a warm green) makes ALL the difference!!! Warm. Cold. Saturated and Unsaturated. Getting those down is a game changer!

I've learned a lot of this by myself recently, but that first nearly 4 minutes of the video was an *excellent* tutorial on how to drybrush well. Really like the "you're doing this /because/" method+reason explanation for folks who don't currently use the methods in their technique 👍
@DarcyBonoCreations9 ай бұрын
Awesome, glad you found it useful! Honestly, and this is gonna sound counter intuitive to a KZbin channel, but I definitely prefer the "learn by myself method" unless I have not clue where to begin. You develope your own style, discover techniques that work to that style as well as ways to correct your mistakes. I think it makes for a more adaptive painter. Of course tutorials are great and we all learn in different ways, but as an impulsive tactile learner, the DIY experimentation strategy is severely underrated 😄.
@mirage80910 ай бұрын
That technique of putting some medium on the model and then putting the colour on top of that is essentially wet blending. With a little practice you can very easily get awesome gradients going on capes and the like. And once you get a feel for that you can do NMM effects very easily. It's a very clever little trick and I'll find a bunch of uses for it. Also, I love makeup brushes for drybrushing. They're awesome at getting that smooth, faux airbrushed zenital look.

Quick question if i may Darcy. As a general rule do you thin all of your contrast paints with medium before applying or are you a "straight from the pot" kinda gal? I'm asking because ive noticed a pretty significant difference in the saturation levels between the different colors. Thanks.@@DarcyBonoCreations
@DarcyBonoCreations9 ай бұрын
It depends on the color and the surface that I'm painting. Really thin colors like Skeleton Horde and Aethermatic Blue I tend to use straight from the pot because they're not very saturated. For more heavily pigmented colors like Cygor Brown, I use thinner as it helps the pigment spread more evenly and not over saturated one area. For textured surfaced I generally use straight from the pot since I don't have to worry about the pigment pooling in one spot since it sinks into the recesses of textured surfaces.

2:44 Using a texture palette should make it possible to skip this step and allow you to start drybrushing wherever you wanted.

You CAN use Grey Seer instead of a midtone like Mechanicus, but like you said it will make the recesses much brighter so your shadows won't be as dark meaning you'll lose contrast (the visual effect not the paint type 😄). It won't look bad just won't look quite the same as the video.

@DarcyBonoCreations18 күн бұрын
Yep they still make Loren Forest, it's one of my favorite greens. Anytime you want to desaturate green without darkening it, mix in some grey. So if you're doing a desaturated skin with Contrast Paint I'd apply Militarum Green over a somewhat light grey (a barely lightened Mechanics Grey), or even mix Basilicanum Grey into Creed Camo (dark semi desaturated green).
@chrisbeau7610 ай бұрын
I accidentally came across mantis Warrior green when GW released their second wave of contrast paints. I figured it would just be some sort of variation of plague bearer flesh. However when I painted it over white scar it became this toxic irradiated yellow green saturated color that had also left deep and dark green contrast whenever I went over any recesses. I was using it as a test replacement for Tesseract glow, and I was pleasantly surprised with how bold and contrasty mantis warrior green came out. I never thought of adding another contrast paint, such as your black Templar example, which honestly would be the opposite of what I’m looking to do, but I liked your Elysian Green idea which is a GW paint that I usually pass at the store because in the bottle it comes off as a desaturated earthy green. But what strange is in your video, it appeared more of a yellow green but with a little bit more yellow? Not sure what I could do to enhance the color to push it a little bit more so it pops. I could certainly experiment with Elysian Green, however I’ve been recently experimenting with colors like AK interactive pistachio or the new Vallejo game color bio green which I think might do the trick if I sent it down although it’s already very thin. Perhaps I could add some fluorescent yellow? I’ve also been playing around with scale 75 and I came across a neat color called toxic waste, green or maybe even pro acryl Dark yellow, green, thin down with their glaze and wash medium… Definitely have some ideas that I’m gonna go home and play around with . I appreciate our videos grabbed a few recipes because they worked out really well on a few projects of mine, such as the antique gold with the Garaghak’s Sewer mixed with skeleton horde over silver. I’ve also been using undercoats for my metallics such as XV 88 for gold and mechanicus standard gray as a base color before I paint silver.
@DarcyBonoCreations10 ай бұрын
Well thank you, glad you found them useful! And have you tried Striking Scorpion Green. It's not quite as yellow as Tesseract Glow, but it's more saturated. Here's an example over white: instagram.com/p/C0Ec14kOnk9/?igsh=bW40YnM5bXA0ODA4 I'm not sure if you're in the US, but this fluorescent as a highlight color to it, makes it eye-searingly bright yellow green if that's what you're looking for: hugeminis.com/product/quantum-green/

I'm personally not a fan of it. It's one of the much more transparent Contrast paints so it results in a really pale yellow green. I think it would look better as the underbelly for a monster rather than an entire skin color. That being said, I have used it as a glaze before to blend the transitions in yellow greens before, but not as the foundation for a skin tone.

It's a cool black, so it's go blue in it. But If you thin it and spread it over white it dries almost like a dark teal. Either way, it's good for mixing with greens.
