Yes was specially inspired by The Beatles. Anderson and Squire were huge fans of baroque music and The Beatles. Yes is probably the big prog band more directly influenced by The Beatles.

@@astraltimewarrior5129 Yeah, you can say that. I think, if memory serves, they did “Every Little Thing” live fairly recently (well, MY recent “near”, so sometime since 1985! 😆). Maybe the 35th Anniversary. It was a great arrangement and that new guitarist, Steve Howe(again 😆), did cool work on it. I had seen the list from previous shows, so I knew it was coming. It, as usual, was great!

When I realized what you said- “half century” - it really was a lot to take. I remember the day I got the record. A sunny Saturday… late in 1972, the green cover… The logo. The night before I had walked into my buddy’s house. They had CTTE on his massive stereo. Suddenly, I GOT Yes. Third eye opened!! Thanks for the explanation of that…Awakening. I had been an Allman Bros/Derek/Dominos fan even a blues-fusion purist & still love it, even though I played jazz in school when I heard ‘Lizard’, ‘Trilogy’, ‘Aqualung’… I liked the idea of complicated classical fusion, then, 1972 came. ‘Thick as Brick’ unlocked the door. ‘Close to the Edge, the album, knocked down the wall. The following summer, “A Passion Play” sealed the deal. My five favorite records then, as now, are CttE, APP, TAAB, The Yes Album, Allman’s Live at Fillmore East. Those, I’d take along to exile on the desert isle, and “…Topographic Oceans” so I would have something dense to figure out. Oh, and “Dark Side of the Moon”- everyone needs some easy listening. Then, there is “Relayer”. Next an obscure little 1969 release called “The Cheerful Insanity of Giles, Giles and Fripp, Little Feat’s “Last Record Album” and “Time Loves a Hero”. Kind of eclectic, with the common thread that they were all recorded before 1976. I tell myself, as soon as I can play those records keyboard parts, I’ll move on.

One of my top 10 bands. These guys and Gentle Giant just went so far beyond what anyone thought could be done sonically. That's not to mention the endless bands they inspired (rush, spock's beard, dream theater, transatlantic, etc...). Absolute magic.

I LOVE seeing people talk about Yes and progressive rock in general! Close to the Edge is an incredibly special work of art. The lyrics tell a very universal story if you pay attention and read the book the song was based off of. I wish their aesthetic would come back around into style... IMO, it is a perfect album Also that Close to the Edge billboard is pretty cool

Perhaps the peak of progressive rock. Every second is perfectly crafted. I also love how they sometimes opened their concerts with the ending of Stravinsky's Firebird Suite, which then transitioned into Siberian Khatru. Yessongs is a 10/10 live album for those who want to listen to more YES. Stellar video!

I really love Relayer, as far as classic Yes albums go, and I really loathe the '80's Yes stuff (but it was nice that they get back together and toured, since I got to see them a few times), but I gave to agree with you - Yessongs is a must have. Yes performing most of their best songs live, which required a double album, of course. It's a journey going from start to finish with that release. Just * muah * chef's kiss all the way.

The album 'Yessongs' is the only album(s) that I have had in all formats, 8-track, vinyl, cassette, and CD. I still listen to it occasionally, and at 50 years on, I'm still blown away by its overarching virtuosity! No music coming out today even approaches what Yes, Genesis, ELP, King Crimson, Camel, or Renaissance put out on a regular basis. Prog rock till I die!

That's always been easy for me. The Yes Album has great songs they kept in their live sets for decades. Perpetual Change and Starship Trooper are the highlights on an album containing six great songs. Vocal harmonies are incredible on Disillusion, the middle section of Starship Trooper. Howe's acoustic guitar picking and Anderson's lead vocal, along with Squires harmonies, are just perfect. I often rewind and play that section again, sometimes just to hear Anderson sing, "Folloooooooow." It's obvious Steve Howe was bursting with ideas, and his solos are things of beauty, especially during the fadeout of Starship Trooper and Perpetual Change. Chet Atkins influences Howe throughout the album with his melodic playing and it's something I really miss after the band's cover of Paul Simons America. Rick Wakeman was obviously a great addition to Yes, but Tony Kaye kept the music grounded with his solid Hammond B3 playing while Howe soloed throughout each song and Squire added contrapunctual elements to songs as effectively as a second lead guitarist. When you add Brufords drumming to the mix, you get a sound that Anderson compared to five radios tuned to different music stations.

I had just gotten a vintage record played for Christmas and only had a handful of my moms old albums at that point. I was also knee deep into my time of discovering older music. Right after discovering this album, I went through a breakup. I had been moving away from toxic friends, and had a lot of emotional baggage and stress, and I had closed myself off a bit. My girlfriend at the time had enough and left, and it was fair. I had too many issues, and a relationship shouldn’t feel like you have to carry someone else’s emotional baggage. But anyways, I found this album, at a point where I was probably at my lowest. It felt like the entire world was falling apart around me, and I was standing terrified and alone. This music would fill my ears, and at times it would bring me to tears. I found the lyrics in Close to the Edge to be somewhat uplifting in my time of need, and it was one of the few things that got me out of my slump. For that, I will forever remember this album fondly. Thanks for the good memories, Yes.

To add on to 5:40: I think what makes YES so special is that they have their own baseline sound that itself is - atleast superficially - recreatable (Starcastle and unfortunetly some of YES' terrible Albums like Tormato and most of the recent ones come to mind), but they (almost) always find a way to add some kind of special sauce to the (good) Albums to make them a unique and rewarding experience. This was obviously helped by the constantly revolving doors that their lineups were, so I think to say that they just dont sound the same when you change just a single band member needs to be understood in the most positive way possible.

Excellent job! My only "complaint" is the notion that Bill Bruford fit better in King Crimson than he did in Yes. Chances are, Bill himself would agree, admittedly, but I hold that his work in YES was absolutely perfect FOR Yes. His drumming on the first 5 albums is superb in every conceivable way. He is my favorite drummer, hands down, and his work with Yes was the starting point for me as to WHY he is my favorite. But again, great, great job with this video. Prog Rock is my favorite musical genre, Yes is my favorite Prog group, and CTTE is my favorite Yes album!

The LYRICS make total sense! except Siberian which is one of most slickest dynamic funky grooving Masterpieces of all time by YES. It is the quintessential PROG ALBUM EVER.

I saw Yes live for every new Album release. Great shows. Fragile, Close to the Edge, Tales from Topographic oceans, Relayer and Going for the One. To me that was their golden age. Awaken, imo, is their masterpiece. Go check out "Awaken" - Jon Anderson & Todmobile 2013. When that video dropped on youtube....... 0:40 You can thank Jojo's Bizarre Adventure for introducing and entire new generation to Yes. To be continued.......... 1:33 I spoke too soon you brought it up.

TFTO is more ambitious, but a bit too ambitious imo. It is a solid album with many brilliant moments, but CTTE, Relayer, Fragile, The Yes Album and GFTO I consider to be more balanced.

Nothing wrong with that. All of their albums from The Yes Album through Relayer are tremendous. After that...not even Babe Ruth hit a home run every time he batted.

Fully agree. I don't have the musical knowledge that you do, so I can't articulate all the things that make it great, but I can say that Close to the Edge is my favorite album of all time and has been since I was 17. II'm 62 now. Loved it then, love it now. I still listen to it occasionally, and the grooves in my brain have been worn so deep, I remember it all, even if it's been years since I last heard it. And the Steven Wilson remaster is great.

Interesting. KZbin is taking me down a rabbit hole of Close to the Edge album reviews. Yours is the second in a row that suggests Siberian Khatru is somehow not up to the rest of the album. It's a bit of a surprise! I was 12 when this album came out and I and my friends loved/still love this track as much as the other two.

i saw them at the long beach arena,ca (auditorium was smaller). “tales” had just been released. wakeman was “ailing” so we only got 3 sides. close to the edge, opened the show with the birds and forest sound and the lsd just kicking in. brilliant show! the first quad pa i’d ever experienced.

Prog rock is such a beautiful genre of music, and Yes, and by extension, Close to the Edge are an extension of that. Music that demands to be listened to with full attention to appreciate as opposed to putting it on in the background or dancing to it. It seems weird to say this, but ever since discovering Prog through Pink Floyd halfway through High School, my outlook has significantly changed on how I viewed life and myself, I gained more of an appreciation for the finer details so to speak. To this day Siberian Khatru remains one of, if not my most favorite song of all time.

I had the fortune to go see Yes last Thursday with my dad. The majority of the people there were in their 60's and 70s. I locked eyes with Geoff quite a few times, he looked like he was enjoying himself. And seeing Steve perform the intro riffs for Close to the Edge was beautiful.
