Janson's color is what leads your eye across the page. The red will enlarge and contract like a beat.

Agree. It's been so enjoyable and enlightening for me to revisit these comics for Janson's color. It's special. - Jim

Miller’s daredevil blew my mind when I was a kid, another great run in the 1980’s was Sal Buscema and Gerry Conway’s Tombstone original arc in Spectacular Spider-Man or Conway’s and Saviuk’s arc on Web of Spider-Man when Chameleon takes over the Bugle. These stories dealt with drugs, cartels even bulimia gritty stuff for a kid to read growing up.

I was reading that Tombstone arc off the spinner racks. That was a standout run!

Years ago when i had just started reading comics (i was 10-12 of age, 44 now) some kid i knew found a stack of comics in his house and just gave them to me. And this single issue was among them. My introduction to frank miller, daredevil, and everything associated. And what a book. Had NO idea what was going on and what the history was but it was so epic and bad ass. I read it to tatters and it influenced my own comics ive made ever since.

One of my favorites issues of all time. Told from Bullseye's point of view. Daredevil only speaks the one time. So great.

Miller's classic DD run happened when I was in high school, and it was the one monthly that absolutely everyone who gave a damn about quality comics storytelling refused to miss. Uncanny X-Men and The New Teen Titans were good for standard superhero entertainment, but the Miller/Janson Daredevil was special.

Just happened to read this a couple of days ago. This is an all time great single issue story. It's the first back issue I can remember saving up for. No regrets!

My favorite line in any fictional story: "Hey, I don't recognize you," "I'm new, I got uhhh McCaffrey's job." "McCaffrey Quit?", "He won't be back." "Too bad, nice guy." Only other line is one I use all the time myself: "That was dumb,...fun....,but dumb."

Really nice video, and great to have Tom’s input as well. I just finally got around to reading the entire complete Miller DD run in order for the first time and it was a real masterpiece. Definitely lived up to all the hype. Bullseye is the coolest Marvel villain ever !

This took me back to being 13 at the comic shop. An art school was right down the street, so the commentary and analysis fueled so many great conversations and really helped me develop my art vocabulary. Listening to you guys break down and appreciate Miller’s Daredevil brought a tear to my eye, and I despair that comics will never be this good again. Subscribed.

I rarely see artists these days do the “action in motion” illustrating acrobatic combat. Kaare Andrews does motion very well, it reminds me of Frank, but also young Jim Lee in his 1st outing a Mockingbird back up story. Of course, its a lot of figures in dynamic action poses so its extra work…

Considering how young Miller started working at Marvel and Daredevil, it is pretty amazing the mark he left behind.

Yes, I can see Miller copping from Eisner on those wharf tableaux. I remember seeing Wyler's 1937 film the Dead End on TV and being struck by how Eisner must've taken from the shots, particularly at the waterfront, which were built on sound stages like theatre sets. (Also, incidentally, the source for many Kid Gang comics.)

Thanks, fellas. I had a lot of fun watching this and thought you all did a brilliant job at this and learned new things from many of your comments and very much agree with the assessment and credit of everything said here. I am still an artist/illustrator and remember being 11,12 years old when these comics came out and how AMAZING it was to turn the pages and see this stuff for the first time. Miller's art changed everything for me and for many years even now his DAREDEVIL work very much set the bar as to how I judge and what I've come to expect from comic art and certainly still influences much of the comic art I like today. I Just Subscribed! Looking forward to more excellent comic content. BEST!

Miller was one of the first mainstream western artists to fuck with manga. In an interview from this period he talks about being influenced by the "samurai comics" that he finds in the Asian import stores of early 80s New York.

I was 9 when this came out. To say it blew my mind would be a massive understatement. There are so many great moments in this issue. I forgot that the scene with Bullseye and the Punisher in the yard was in this issue.

I bought this off the rack when I was about 13 and I don’t understand why this didn’t have a bigger impact on me as a young cartoonist. This really should have been a four color face punch; where was my brain to not be blown away?? And there was a lot of buzz about this comic on publication too.

Cool video, guys. I picked up the recent Daredevil Marvel Masterwork volume, which contains the start of Miller's run on the title. Apparently, the omnibus version is re-colored, while the Masterworks aren't, so I'm looking forward to that. Do you have any thoughts on the Waid run?

Last three minutes: Miller told Shooter he thought he was going to have to kill Elektra. I remember when these issues they came out. After Elektra was pronounced dead Miller revealed he had the entire arc planned out from the beginning EXCEPT his vision was using Black Widow. Marvel said, "You're NOT killing the Black Widow, Frank!" So he had to create Elektra (probably already had her created but didn't want the character to become Marvel's property). I thought that was well known; or is it ancient history, 40 years old?

24:25 that's a little snag from the death wish movies, Bronson always going undercover with the worst excuses. "I'm makin' a sandwich" 😂 but check it out, its almost verbatim the same scene.
