Love how Jim was impressed with the negative space on page two. Lol. I hope he’s kidding.

I kinda dug those big weird exhaust pipes on Iron Man's armor. Portacio's art got me super intrigued at that time and I liked the vibe, but it was tough to care about much of what was going on. Cap and Avengers had the better first issues, but FF was the one I stuck with for the whole ride. First issue didn't have the action & colour of the other two, but it felt like a more stable, blockbuster take on things. A coat of gloss on an old favourite that gets better as the issues go on.

Man, this was a goofy time. IIRC, Marvel wanted to pull Hulk fully over to the Heroes Reborn stories, but Peter David was still running his series. The compromise ended up being Banner split from Hulk and going away while Peter David's Hulk kept going.

I think David got the better end of the deal there. Savage Hulk may have been limited in some regard, but he wasn't Stoner Hulk who was haphazardly placed into being Iron Man's main nemesis.

It'd be super funny if this issue got the Kayfabe effect. Heck I'm tempted to buy a copy myself based on the absurdity alone 😄

I literally tried to lick my finger to turn the page while watching your video on my phone. I’m new to this channel but collected comics heavily in the 90’s. Looks like you’re doing something right! Cheers,

There's something so bizarre about these old liefeld covers. I wasn't even around when these books were released, but call it nostalgia - I think there's something romantic and beautiful about them. The posing / physiques are so stretched and absurd, they almost read as a send up or a pastiche of the superhero genre. But at the same time they're so sincere so it almost seems like a reaffirmation of the tropes of the superhero genre, could there be anything that is *more* superhero than what was distilled here in the late 80's and early 90's? At my local comic shop you often used to find back issues like these stuck in the 99c bin ( or even going for 10c sometimes during sales!) and I used to buy all that I could and I'd just go home and flip thru looking at the art. I don't think I've ever read one or grasped a plot but looking through the visuals there's a kind of magic to it!

I really enjoyed this episode! Great points with the added humor was a bonus. Because I’m a FF and Jim Lee fan, I only picked up that FF back in the day. I do remember that I didn’t stick with it after issue #2. Looking back at these comics, What a cash grab!

Please do a video about Bacchus, by Eddie Campbell. I found the writing to be particularly great, and the art is rough shot and fun, with cool lines and some minimalist maximalist shenanigans. Bacchus!

I don't think it's the worst Iron Man comic of all time (blue Iron Man takes that), but this is close. The negative space really comes off as saving time on the art that was attempted to be stylized. The design of the suit is new and interesting but you get maybe two looks at it which is a waste. Plus, I think Naked Hulk is a bad choice due to 1) his head being tiny and 2) the innate flaw of having to censor him which limits what you can do with him.

First time I was out of art school and shopping my portfolio around, this nonsense was happening. Which made it frustrating when portfolio reviews would nitpick over the same shit they were actually publishing: bad anatomy, bad or nonexistent backgrounds, shit storytelling. Couldn’t crack the code so I went the indie route. I never bought any of these. I do remember tearing them apart with a couple of comic shop guys who also went to art school.

This was such a hard era for me as a comic book fan. Every single book either went down the toilet writing-wise or art-wise. All of them looked HORRIBLE. I still find them awful. The artistic shift as digital came to the fore was just brutal. Every book looked and still looks gross. That frame right at the front with Captain America, Iron Man, Avengers, and Fantastic Four books; it gives me post-traumatic stress almost. It’s just so disappointing in comparison to what was coming out even 1-2 years prior. I didn’t recover from this until the 2010’s. It can still be tough finding good books now but at least there are some every once in a while.

LOL. Man the 90's were wild! I LOVE Heroes Reborn. Especially that Iron Man suit. If not for this event, I would have probably never read any of these titles. Avengers I might have finally read when I picked it up again-The Ultimates and New Avengers. Same for FF. But I would never have read any Iron Man or Captain America as I didn't before and haven't since. Iron Man. FF, Avengers, Captain America for me.

I remember feeling disappointed after checking out this issue. I was so looking forward to seeing Whilce's artwork since he left Wetworks. His women in this issue looked like men in drag and his men looked like they all went 12 rounds with Rocky Balboa. And it has been like that ever since. I dont know, it's like he lost it and never got it back. His X-Factor and Uncanny X-Men work was so amazing. His women looked cute and guys looked like fashion models.

By good fortune, I came in late at issue #2 as my first exposure... and quit at issue #3. Some of the most butt-ugly faces ever seen in comics: hollowed-out cheeks on zombie nutcracker dolls with bloated necks; ubiquitous micro-pinprick eyes catatonically rolling up into darkened, ventriloquist dummy eye sockets... Was Whilce using corpses as reference? 'Be sure to always leave yards of excess white space beneath the iris' 🙄 -- I must have missed that chapter of "How To Draw Comics the Marvel Way."

All of those Heroes Reborn books are dog-awful but if I had to rank - I'd say FF is #1 for actually having solid visual storytelling, Cap is #2 because it's so awful it becomes good again, then Avengers, then Whilce and Scott's steaming pile

It's a visually striking book. Portacio had a Jim Lee/Silvestri style that worked. The story was some weak ass shit but by today's standards would be very good.

So much terrible art in this era: tiny heads, big thighs, useless detailing, scribbly lines everywhere adding up to nothing. There's been bad comics art in all generations but the '90s were really smashed with an ugly stick.
