It’s such a relief to see a priest character depicted in a TV Show nowadays as rational, wise, and calm.

i think Lantom is the type of person every priest or preacher should strive to be, honestly. imagine a religion full of people who not only are this thoughtful, but are willing to treat others with the respect it takes to have an honest conversation with. Lantom isn't even trying to get Matthew to believe something here; he's trying to impart wisdom.

@@workaholickbut what if we the fans can do something about that??? Make some noise! Rattle some Cages! Keep the tone of this show original and faithful without drying out the characters, plot lines and the show itself. Vinnie D was the #1 ADVOCATE to bring back Daredevil. It’s understandable that in this industry it’s 100% about business. Look I’m no economist But there’s no business unless u reeeeally capture the interest of the consumer. THAT is EXACTLY what Netflix did with Drew Goddard for Daredevil!!!! This makes me wonder why Born Again is getting entirely rewritten 👀 Granted; theres always problems: creative differences, actors scheduling conflicts, etc… It’s just… I don’t see the logic of how it’s just “business 🤷‍♂️” when you lose money in making unfaithful plots in shows and movies. Plus Actors aren’t getting any younger.

Wilson Fisk will always be the joker to Matt Murdock's Batman. He can't kill him, no matter how many lives that monster corrupts or kills. A lawyer dresses like a devil yet does will do just, while a man who assumes the appearance of a philanthropist and businessman commits heinous acts in the acquisition of power which never ends. He is the embodiment of the kind of evil that Matt has for him to fight against both in the court and in the street. There are given the points where all daredevil has managed to do was to fight king pin to a standstill, and Wilson willingly walking off the board, as he had just done this past year. These two have similar beginnings and yet diverge with regards to the kind of men their fathers were. Jack Murdoch was a boxer with little education and yet loved his son and did what he could to provide for him. With Fisk, his father was an ambitious politician and also a bully who instilled his son every sadistic instinct. He actually taught his son how to be a bully. And that tutelage came back to haunt him when Fisk murdered his father to save his mother from more abuse. But then of course the corruption continues, as he and his mother covered it up. And I highly doubt that his mother did anything to the suede or deprogram her husband's influence on her son because the results speak for themselves. Wilson Fisk is the devil more so than Matt ever will be. There is no redemption for someone like him, before he would have to have genuine remorse and he has none. He justifies every heinous act he takes. The villain is always the hero of their own story. And the series did a fantastic job in portraying that version of the kingpin.

The ending in this clip is damn good! "What if you could've stopped him?" Matt asks, as if stopping that commander from murdering Gahiji and his family would've changed much... The question shows he didn't understand a damn thing of what Lantom was talking about... He saw that Satan was real, but that he wasn't one single entity, but a "spirit" that comes over otherwise regular humans, like the commander, imbuing them with a capacity for evil that doesn't exist in even the most savage, ruthless, hardened soldiers.

I'm not sure I agree with your conclusion. If stopping the commander wouldn't have mattered then stopping criminals wouldn't matter and Matt wouldn't be a vigilante. I think you're misssing an important point, "Maybe that's what the Devil is, a symbol to be feared." The point wasn't 'the devil can influence anyone so don't bother stopping anyone' the point (that Matt took anyway) was to become the 'Devil', the symbol to be feared, to all these ruthless criminals. The same way the Father says the Devil drives people to church, Matt hopes to drive people away from crime, lest the (dare)Devil come for them. I don't think Father Lantom would be against stopping the commander, he's only wary of who Matt might become in doing such things.

The challenge is that the right thing to do is the harder path to walk. I’m interested in religion while remaining an atheist (catholic atheist) but I suspect if I’m wrong then humans are composed of both the divine and the evil, the Jekyll and Hyde, Batman and the joker. Matt and Fisk. Order and chaos. Earth is the board, Human beings are the game pieces where god and satan play out their eternal contest. There’s not good humans and evil humans……every human is good and evil Or maybe it’s better to say humans are good vs evil.

As an atheist, I love how this show portrayed both faith and those who hold it. They weren't demonized, they weren't held up as absolute paragons. They were shown to be good people, trying their best to be the best that they could. I find that this form of writing is so hard to find in fiction not just these days, but for decades past as well. In DD, faith is core to his character, it informs so many of his actions, and that the show went to great lengths to portray that in character is fantastic. It's also one of the reasons I love Captain America's little quip in Avengers just before he jumps out the helicarrier. Each moment shows significant parts of their character without insulting them for it.

Believe it or not, but I once met a man - I believe he was a journalist - who was in the exact same place at the exact same time as Father Lantom. He told us his experience of Rwanda genocide, and as he was going deeper and deeper into how truely horrific it was, not only physically but humanly speaking (people from the same village, community, neighbourhood, church, even family denouncing each others to the militia who then slaughtered them all with machetes and guns), he burst into tears. I was so moved that I couldn't help but taking him in my arms. If the Devil didn't inspire all these people who had lived and shared so much together to betray each others and give up on their very souls, I don't know who did.

Okay, maybe I'm high, but this scene is not only incredible, but it actually has a lot to say about Matt's character and the struggle he's dealing with. See, when I first saw this scene, I assumed it was about the devil proper, and evil as it related to Fisk and what Matt is fighting against. Like, Matt is trying to understand evil and how to combat it properly. He struggles with violence and his love of it. Like the Father says later in the show, he's looking for a reason NOT to kill Fisk. But it's also about the devil inside Matt specifically. That part of him that wants to hurt bad people, make them pay, even kill them for what they've done. That part of him is no different than the militia commander in the Father's story. Part of Matt would do the same thing to someone who's hurt and killed so many people. Part of Matt would commit evil to satisfy his urge for justice...and likely damn himself in the process. Matt is RELATING to the commander in the story, and realizing he can't do what the commander did, not even to people like Fisk.

To be honest, I like Daredevil's reason for the No-Kill Rule much, much better than Batman's. I say this as an atheist because one of the characters refuses to kill out of hope of redemption and judgement, while the other refuses out of a refusal to turn into those he swears to stop, but still refuses to acknowledge that some men deserve death (Joker, for example) if only to stop the havoc the spread.
@FinalGreymon
@FinalGreymon Жыл бұрын
That's really only part of the reason Batman doesn't kill. The Bigger and more important reason is he knows if he kills even one of his Villains, he'll never stop. Earth 51 is a perfect example. On that Earth, when Joker killed Jason, Batman killed him in response. However, it didn't stop with The Joker. He killed all of his Villains and then moved onto other Heroes Villains. And this happens throughout DC's Multiverse. Whenever Batman kills, he does not stop.
@voidseeker4394

@@FinalGreymon Batman is just as crazy as other villains of the universe. Killing the villains would be pretty much the solution to the problem. But he doesn't want to actually solve it, as it would eliminate the purpose of his life. So he is perfectly comfortable to allow his enemies to break free again and again, causing chaos and suffering of innocents. And what makes it even better is that he is also oftentimes the main motivation for those villains: they wreak havoc specifically to attract him.

"There were people who called themselves Satanists who made Crowley squirm. It wasn't just the things they did, it was the way they blamed it all on Hell. They'd come up with some stomach-churning idea that no demon could have thought of in a thousand years, some dark and mindless unpleasantness that only a fully-functioning human brain could conceive, then shout "The Devil Made Me Do It" and get the sympathy of the court when the whole point was that the Devil hardly ever made anyone do anything. He didn't have to. That was what some humans found hard to understand. Hell wasn't a major reservoir of evil, any more than Heaven, in Crowley's opinion, was a fountain of goodness; they were just sides in the great cosmic chess game. Where you found the real McCoy, the real grace and the real heart-stopping evil, was right inside the human mind." Good Omens

There's a god in each person who believes in a god, just as there is a devil in each person who believes there is a devil. These fictional characters are concepts. When a Christian asks themselves "what would Jesus do?" they are calling upon the god inside them, and seeking to be the best they know how to be. When someone admits, "the Devil made me do it," they are calling upon the worst aspects of themselves. That which can be found inside them willing to commit atrocities be it for greed, glory, or even survival. We can also see these aspects in the actions and intentions of others but make no mistake: there is nothing magical or spiritual about this. The war between good & evil rests on your shoulders, and inside your head.
