One factor that also allowed Daredevil to be so cohesive as character was all the great writers who worked on his titles (ex: Brian Michael Bendis, Ed Brubaker, Mark Waid, Chip Zsdarsky and, my personal favorite Frank Miller) with each one working with what the previous ones build rather than just ignoring it and doing their own stuff. The best exemple is Mark Waid's run and how he brought back the light-hearted swashbuckling tone of the 60's comics. Waid could just ignored the previous dark runs and have Matt already acting in this more fun upbeat attitude, but instead he made this change be part of Matt's development, with Matt reflecting about how much of mess his life became and trying to be more optimistic.

Great video! One note about the Catholic side of things - Daredevil killing someone like Kingpin wouldn't necessarily damn his soul. If he feels true remorse for his actions and confesses them during the Sacrament of Confession he may be forgiven. The difficulty for Daredevil (and what makes him interesting) is whether or not he'll feel any remorse for that sin, and thus why it's such an important struggle for him.
@AuthorsAnvil4 ай бұрын
A very good - and important - distinction that I should have made. Thanks for the input!
@UNITDW4 ай бұрын
Imperfect contrition is a term used for being sorry for sin because of the fear of hell, perfect contrition is a term used for being sorry for sin because you love God and are remorseful for offending Him. The latter is obviously better morally, but both are sufficient for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Even if he didn’t feel true remorse for killing the Kingpin, he could confess out of fear of the just punishment of Hell.

@@UNITDW but does the MAN WITHOUT FEAR really fear punishment?
@UNITDW4 ай бұрын
@@shuvodipbarua6001 I would say, on the basis of the way Daredevil behaves and reverences God and his teachings, that offending God (and suffering His punishment, which is eternal separation from Him) is the only thing that Daredevil truly fears. It’s also possible that through his relationship with God (in Marvel the One Above All) and his asking for graces to overcome fear (which he will be asking for as a Catholic) that he is able to be allowed to avoid fear in such situations (but that’s kind of a headcannon). Additionally, rational fear is also sufficient, rather than simple emotional fear (imagine a psychopath without immediate emotional fear, they could rationalise that Hell and eternal separation from God is a terrible fate and want to seek reconciliation to avoid it - this would be acceptable for Confession).

His conflict is what makes him so interesting. He’s constantly at odds with the laws of man, the laws of his faith, and the laws of his own vigilante code. Also by virtue of his religion, his stories thematically are typically much more mature and philosophically interesting than most superheroes, as his struggles with faith are a very relatable and realistic topic that can be explored and applies pretty universally unless you’re just a staunch atheist.

One thing I've always appreciated about DD is his consistent faith throughout the years. There are countless villains, both in film and in comics, who are motivated by religion. It's good to have a character that uses faith as an impetus for good, rather than fanatical evil. Modern America is heavily biased against religion noawadays, so his kind of positive example is nice to still have.
@mohamamdyahyaasadahmad31656 ай бұрын
I agree with this. But I do take issue with the fact that it dumbs down religion as faith of choice and personal, romantic interpretation, rather than something they hold true because of convincing power, and at least to some degree dictated by some consistent interpretation of the source material. In fact the former is often the reason the smarter among the anti-religion folk try to beat down on religion.

Agreed, and I see people asking for LESS religion in Daredevil and Nightcrawler comics. We have 2 Christian characters to about 10,000 characters that are religiously ambiguous or of a different religion. And on top of that, the characters often sacrifice their faith in terms of things like lust, in the name of “sex sells”. If that’s not under representation, idk what is.

My most cohesive character vote goes to my favorite character, Nightwing. Nightwing, as a character, represents a better Batman, and this is reflected in a few ways. One, in origin, Nightwing and Batman are almost identical. They both had their parents taken away at a young age by sheer fate and organized crime. The difference, however, is that Bruce didn't have anyone to guide him out of that dark place. Dick had Bruce, who was broken, but was still able to help Dick find his way out of the dark. Then, unlike Bruce, Dick is able to move past his trauma and becomes a pure symbol of hope who fights for (generally) less traumatic and self deprecating reasons. Even his name is part of his character, albiet a retroactive one. In more recent depictions, Nightwing gets his name from Superman (specifically a Kryptonian Legend), which shows how he gets the more positive aspects from the DC universe. Also contrasting Bruce, is the fact that he started the Teen Titans because he likes people and teamwork, which is opposed to Bruce who is usually a part time member. Wrapping this all together in a nice bow is his (post mulletwing era) costume. It's all black, with a blue eagle piercing through, showing how out of the darkness shines the brightest lights.

@VidoeGamesForEver19 күн бұрын
He strikes me as one of the most nuanced, captivating, and well-developed fictional characters. First of all, he is blind, and because of this, he has the ability to see, comprehend, and assist others as well as the environment around him. He feels that God has given him this talent so that he might assist others. He’s a Catholic. Matt Murdock believes in and worships the Christian god in a universe where there are Norse gods of thunder and Egyptian deity avatars. His approach to trying to rehabilitate himself and others is influenced by his Catholic faith, but he also feels a great deal of guilt for posing as the devil and severely punishing people. He doesn't stop, though. As Daredevil, he sins every night, but in his eyes, he is also doing what God wants. And lastly, he's an attorney. He has faith in the rule of law and fairness. He devotes his time to defending the defenseless and locking up the guilty so that they can: 1. prevent harm to others; and 2. have an opportunity to repent and find atonement for their sins. I don't think any character has as much depth, opposing desires and anxieties, and a wonderful balance between being a vigilante by night and helping others by day as Dareveil. Despite never knowing his mother, losing his sight at a young age, and losing his father to crime, the Man Without Fear defends Hells Kitchen. No matter what life throws at him, Matt Murdock will always get back up as long as people need aid. He is an inspiration to those with disabilities and to people with and without faith. In my opinion, no character has as much complexity, opposing desires and anxieties, and an amazing balance of personality. A hero who uses billy clubs and a variety of other martial arts in addition to boxing deserves special recognition for having such a great and distinctive superhero fighting style.

I’m a devout Catholic, and one time while studying my religion I came across a story about gargoyles. Gargoyles are interesting, because why would the Catholic church use demonic-looking figures to decorate their places of worship. I found the reason was to ward off demons. The demons would look at the gargoyles as mirrors, or reminders of their appearance, which would remind them of their eternal damnation, thus cause them so much pain and anguish that they would flee, not being able to bear their reality. I believe Daredevil dresses as a devil for the same reason. He makes himself appear as a demon to scare demons(criminals).

I mostly agree with everything you said but I think that Batman shares the trait you mentioned. Like Daredevil his morals are extremely specific, I’d say even more so. Batman as a character (when he’s written well and faithfully) doesn’t just not kill people, he also refuses to permanently injure them. He’s very specific in how he’ll torture or interrogate someone. He has so many lines he won’t cross not out of faith but because of his belief that Gotham needs a symbol of hope and he knows that something like that takes very specific and complex morals to keep intact. He’s a symbol of fear to those who need to be afraid but the symbol of the Batman is also a symbol of hope to others. The light in the dark.

Personally I think Magik is the most cohesive character Marvel has. She dies for 20 years, comes back and her character arc doesn't miss a beat. I've never seen that happen with any other character in comics, and I doubt we will ever see it from any character to come. She gets her full character arc from beginning to end before they start to take her in different directions. You also don't have to go all over the place to follow her story. There aren't any retcons you have to worry about. Her timeline is also very straightforward.

@drineman95176 ай бұрын
Another character that you just mentioned in video is Hawkeye. Both Hawkeye's are very consistent from run to run, but most writers drastically one, both, or their world changing, either drastically or subtly. Despite the writers changing the personality, motive, or even themes of these two characters, they transition from one theme, whether one writer finishes it in their run or it's left for the next person to complete the theme and to create a transition or new theme for the character to follow. On the other side, Moon Knight is so inconsistent from run to run because his history and themes, like daredevil, are so complicated and in depth, with the difference being that moon knight's theme aren't related to each other. With talented writers examing the character; they can write cosmic horror, religious themes, family and friends dealing with DID, accepting DID, religious interaction, to international crime. So if ya want to write more about Marvel's Consintent characters, I recommend analysing these two; one with drastic arcs, but the line between being solid allows for a smooth transition, while the other doesn't need consistent cohesiveness, because his themes don't interact with each other, allowing for the writers to jump around.

I really like this video: it reveals a lot of depth on the Matt Murdock/Daredevil character. I especially like the reasoning behind why he chooses to dress as the devil: Is it to scare criminals like Batman? Is it because he feels he's acting like the Devil with his violent lifestyle? Is it meant to be a joke to himself? A devoutly religious man runs around dressed like the devil? Maybe a combo of the above? He feels he's letting out his inner demonic side when he fights and terrorizes criminals, and he considers it one of the scariest things he can dress up as
@Scytale3214 ай бұрын
This video was great, one more point of cohesion for his character is that his super-hearing allows him to sometimes hear the under-their-breath prayers of victims or their screams to God in final moments. And so he considers his affliction a gift from God so that he may carry out his will on Earth. In that he can answer their prayers immediately with direct action. This is kind of similar to "with great power comes great responsibility" but elevated to "with a powers from God you must carry out his will", so while Spider-Man feels he must fight crime because "it's the right thing to do" Daredevil must never quit because it is a command from heaven.

I think Daredevil needs more recognition and respect. When I ask people I know who at least have a passing interest in Marvel if they’ve seen the Daredevil show they all say no. Matt is Marvels most compelling character who explores many interesting themes such as a Christians relationship with violence. His father was a boxer so naturally he had an interest in violence but this clashes with the morals he was brought up on. Even though he runs around in a devil costume paralysing and brutally injuring drug dealers and mobsters he has a strict moral code believing anyone can be redeemed just like he says when talking to Punisher on a rooftop in season 2. Daredevils relationship with Elektra is extremely toxic. She brings out the darkest elements of Matts personality and she serves as a temptation for him. My favourite love interest for Matt both in the comics and in the show is Claire Temple for the show and Kirsten McDuffie in the comics. In the Mark Waid run Matt tries his best to remain optimistic but he doesn’t have that optimism in his heart it’s just a superficial way of hoping bad things will stop happening to him. Matt is defined by tragedy and contradictions. He’s a lawyer and values the judicial system yet he runs around as a vigilante. This is what makes Matt so interesting and he is always paired up with brilliant writers that can explore a complex and multi dimensional character such as the Man Without Fear. Matt may be blind but he sees the world better than most people. He even manages to help Elektra fight her killer instincts with her even becoming Daredevil while Matt was in prison.

There's another quality of Daredevil that fits in with this cohesive hypothesis, which is IMO Daredevil just might be one of the more believable characters. No superhero is realistic, but sometimes believable. Sometimes I think a Batman or Ironman character is even more unbelievable than characters with limitless powersets just because we know how fragile the human body is. Daredevil as a Character with Superhuman Senses is not so campy and unbelievable as limitless powers. I do believe if there is one set of abilities that we could leverage science to develop in humans right now is Superhuman Senses. MK Ultra is arguably proof of this. Daredevil is just Super enough to suspend our constructs of human fragility while maintaining a possibility of it happening. I don't know how, but it meshes with the cohesive principle you speak about.

In my honest opinion, Matt is like a more solid Batman, everything about him is a lot more concrete, his logic behind the no kill rule for example, Bruce doesn’t kill because he doesn’t want to become the person who killed his parents, while allowing a crazed clown to murder hundreds if not thousands, so it just ends up being a stupid scapegoat, but with Matt, he doesn’t kill because he’s a genuinely good person, because he doesn’t want to kill a killer because the amount would stay the same, Matt uses daredevil to express his evil side, to alleviate it, while Bruce EMBRACES his evil side, that being Batman
@datguy39076 ай бұрын
While that opinion is common, I wholeheartedly disagree. Batman doesn't kill because if he can justify the first kill, he can then justify the second, and the third, and then he becomes a monster. Batman is not Bruce's "evil side", Batman is the person Bruce wishes existed to save his parents from Joe Chill. Bruce literally became his childhood hero. Though I do agree that Daredavil is much more solid than Batman, however that might simply be due to Batman's popularity causing a disruption in his storylines

I like this video but I actually can’t believe you missed this detail: You were looking for a superhero whose namesake represents their domain. …My boy you missed the guy literally named “Captain America”

This is a really fair point, I suppose for me Captain America while very "cohesive" with his theming doesn't have as many layers as Daredevil. When you get past the American iconography and the fact that he's called "Captain America" I don't think he has as much depth as Matt Murdock in terms of his actual character. I should (and will someday) address this point more thoroughly, but thanks for the view and comment :)

@@AuthorsAnvil can totally agree with you there. I’ve always felt like the characterization of Steve Rogers as an upstanding and moral soldier is rich for “Winter Soldier” and “Civil War” type stories where his loyalty is what actually drives him as an opposing force to the government when he doesn’t want to blindly follow orders. It’s a shame all that potential for depth just kind of panned out and drowned in the shallow end of the pool lmao.

The devil of Hell’s Kitchen is a sweet fit, but surely The Black Panther of Wakanda would also be sorta close. P.s went searching comments for DD story recommendations, please drop any here if you have some, I’d really appreciate it.

Daredevil's coherent story : Matt Murdock is a gloomy blind man who fights crime but would like to live a peaceful life. Unfortunately for him every writer puts him in darker and darker situations trying to ruin his life more than the previous writers. End of the story.

Always found “Man Without Fear” to be a weird name. If he had no fear he would take on Kingpin Day 1 and get smushed.

What I find baffling despite reading plenty of his comics (nowhere near all) is how he believes in the justice system and his religion despite both being challenged and factually proven uncertain or outright a scam… he sees Thor and Mephisto but believes in Jesus and sees Wilson Fisk manipulate the system to gain more power upon incarceration… yet he works within the system. Very interesting dilemma for a character but one that perplexes me

"I watched the Netflix show and read the origin issue": The Video Essay. A lot of rambling for someone who doesn't actually read the comics he's talking about. If anyone was impressed by this shallow description, then they somehow didn't know the character.

i hated daredevil as a kid and found him boring, as an adult i love him for exactly the same reasons i didn't like him: he's comic's most mature, well written character, as opposed to spider-man whos is marvel's most shallow character once you grow up and realise what hes for.
