The issue you're having with the overworld camera can be _sort of_ remedied by selecting "Field Camera → Type 2" on the settings. It makes the camera rotate faster like it does in dungeons, instead of rotating smoothly like it does by default on the overworld.

I really like the change from Gabo to Ruff myself. The original Gabo in Japanese is a fine onomatopoeia. And the english version of Ruff is a good example of localizing the core meaning of his name and not having just a direct translation. Because sure a direct translation is exactly what the words would be, it doesn't always properly convey the developer's intention in another language. But the good thing is like you said you can rename the characters so everyone can be happy. :)

Excellent video! My only nitpick is that the comments regarding the class System aren't entirely accurate. As described in the game, Basic Class (Thief, Priest, Mage, etc.) skills are usable across all classes once learned, "but that's not always the case when it comes to more specialized lines of work. Some skills will only be available to you while you're following the careers that use them" (quoted directly from the game). I can confirm this with the Basic Classes as I just recently unlocked Alltrades and have switched between classes (and retained use of the skills), though have yet to unlock any of the Advanced Classes. That said, they removed Hybrid skills and "Maturation" (so no need to keep swapping in order to get skills), and reduced battles for class progression substantially, which is FANTASTIC.

Some stuff I want to comment on here even if it's an older video: Gabo vs Ruff is just a case of actually translating his name, same with Hondara vs Pike. "gabo" in Japanese is one of many dog onomatopoeia words, so calling him Ruff might seem dumb, but it's putting some actual effort in. Hondara is just the Japanese name of your uncle, and it feels weird to have that when everyone else has English names. If they stuck with Japanese names we'd have the mess that is.. Borkano? or something like that for your dad in the game, and frankly you could just as fairly translate his name to be Volcano with how Japanese pronunciation and katakana work. Plus one of the best fun references/jokes in the game is only available in the 3ds version: Kiefer's name is the same across both versions, but in Japanese, his dad is simply called King Burns (meaning Kiefer's last name is Burns). In the English version they went for King Donald and removed references to his last name, so if you feel like it, you could say they're Kiefer and Donald Sutherland. Oh yeah, just IMO, but the job system changes are a fantastic improvement. You no longer have grindy stuff or hidden super skills gotten by cross-training basic jobs in a specific order. Basic jobs all teach permanent abilities and spells, advanced jobs have expanded spells to allow them to feel stronger, and if you want to grind out permanent abilities, the monster jobs teach permanent skills. You can grind those out if you really want to spend dozens of hours on it, and as a bonus, you get monster classes that are just straight up more powerful than all but the Hero and Champion classes for the human jobs. If you can't tell, I went from original DQ7 being pretty meh to loving the 3DS remake.

The whole story with present-day Regenstein has changed completely as well, no longer having to keep track of which type of resident are in the town in order to get a specific form. It's all merged into one now, with collecting humanized monsters (sorta similar to Ruff's situation) and unlocking Monster Meadows far earlier than in the original to start the recruitment process.

Biggest question on change, are the monster heart drops easier to get? ;) Sounds like with the new system that the 'linked' skills might be gone, like warrior5+dancer5 gave you sword dance, or mage5+fisherman5 gave you lightning(or something like that). Note, the Monster Classes from the original were updated, and you can keep abilities from the basic human classes. the monster classes have abilities from the advanced and master classes, but fewer of them, the catch being if you get the ability in a monster class, your character gets to KEEP it. It's very much worth it to abuse this later on.

I like the original version better than the remake. The random encounters being gone sucks, and it is awful that some of the puzzles were dumbed down.
@Sythorn108 жыл бұрын
Glad to see I'm not the only one who prefers random encounters. The spawn rate of enemies in this game, their hit box size, and run speed all combine to make them really difficult--and in dungeons, out right impossible--to avoid. So the non-random encounter system of this remake results in a higher encounter rate than actual random encounters. And to be frank, that's how most j-rpgs with non-random encounters play out. Tales of games are the same way, for instance. But for some reason the spawned encounters system is still praised. I don't get it. I fail to see what's so horrible about having an encounter once every several steps; or how seeing a polygon model slam into your character about one-half second before the encounter triggers somehow makes that less horrible. If anything, I think Bravely Default had a much better take on modernizing random encounters. You can modify the encounter rate in the options menu. Simple as that. Turn the meter all the way up and you'll get in a fight with every step; great for grinding. Turn it all the way down and you'll never get into a fight; good for getting somewhere without distraction. Simple. Elegant. Perfect.

I played the original on PSOne a few years back. I was so used to the new translations of the spells they did for the DS remakes of 4, 5 and 6 that this one's translation was very difficult to grasp and eventually, I abandoned it. Having picked it back up with this remastering, I can easily say it's much easier for me to understand and enjoy, even with all the accents and things. I am a huge fan of Dragon Quest now, and will continue to be for as long as the series progresses. Now on to the 3DS remake of 8!!

I've never played the original, so excuse me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't being unable to carry skills over from advanced classes give you an incentive to seek out and master monster vocations? They'll have skill which otherwise wouldn't be carried over and it'll add more variety, rather than spamming 'ultrahit' for the rest of the game.
@carlcael4178 жыл бұрын
It took a TON of time to unlock Ultrahit. It wasn't nearly as easy to unlock classes as the 3DS version. You needed to focus on having two people that knew hustle to heal so that took a lot of time from knowing other classes. Even if you grinded it still took a long time.

@DreamerTrain5 жыл бұрын
Only basic job abilities. If you're a Pirate that's kicking ass with Swords Dance and you need to switch to another class you've now lost your best damage skills if you wanna continue the race to the Advanced Jobs. Your other characters are VERY LIKELY DIVERSIFIED and trying to learn other paths to Druid or Champion THERE'S NO WAY YOU'LL HAVE THE SAME CHARACTERS but people keep spewing that bs. I hate that you don't retain skills on vocation switch.

Nice to hear a more nuanced take on the remake, with some apparent love for what the original game did. I'm curious what you think of the gameplay in the battles, etc, though. I never played the PS1 game, and noticed that the 3DS game was easy, like absurdly easy to the point where no fight ever gave me any remote challenge aside from a couple of bosses exclusively caused by my party at the time being taken up by a lot of intermediate vocations as I was trying to grind towards others. Even the final boss hardly caused any damage to me at all.
@DigiPen928 жыл бұрын
Can you do one for Dragon Quest VIII when they releases on January also? I did seen from Behind the Voice Actors website mentioned that the Japanese version did added the Japanese audio in the 3DS remake since the PS2 version from the Japanese version had it silent while the localized version from the PS2 did added Voice Acting in the game which it's nice and I did seen the new trailer that was uploaded from the official Nintendo KZbin channel that there is no random encounters and speed up battle animations are added in the 3DS Remake. Speaking of which, I wish Dragon Quest VII 3DS Remake along with the recent games like IX and the DS remakes have voice acting added in the game since VIII already has it.
@TheBlackatdz6 жыл бұрын
my only concern with this game is that the dungeons feature tight corridors and with the monsters appearing on the map, you run into waay too much fights, way more than you would have with random encounters, sometimes they even pop up right under you as you run.
@sameash31538 жыл бұрын
Hey, I have a quick correction. Characters may retain skills from monster classes even after switching. monster classes are therefore much more useful in this version.
@DariaPlaysRPGs8 жыл бұрын
That's... that's an excellent point. Thanks.
@sameash31538 жыл бұрын
You're welcome :) I definitely recommend making whoever your primary healer is into a heal slime, that way you can retain skills like multiheal even after switching classes. The rockbomb class also gives you Kabuff, and it's pretty early on, so you can switch to the class, level up to rank 2, and then ditch the thing and go back to whatever human class you're trying to grind. This definitely adds a lot of strategy to deciding which classes are best for which characters.

Don't you retain skills from monster classes though? If so, I may go monster classes almost exclusively. I remember in the PS1 version, monster classes got the vast majority of the really good skills that normal classes got. Would be great if they didn't nerf monster classes, or make them really hard to get in this remake.
@DariaPlaysRPGs8 жыл бұрын
Apparently you do keep monster skills - looks like I was confused and it's just the advanced tiers that go away. Like Godhand and Summoner.

DariaPlaysRPGs Supposedly the intermediate class skills don't carry over either. Like Paladin and Sage. The advanced classes get all of their parent class skills as they level up. I see why they did it, but after playing the original PS1 version it is disappointing.

Heh. No wonder I was confused.

It's all good, the base classes get a lot of the really solid skills you will want for the rest of the game anyway. So mastering them really early will be helpful. Kind of like picking up most of the Squire skills on Final Fantasy Tactics.

Nice to see that someone else actually played the original. Sure its pretty dated even for 2000 standards when it comes to graphics but it was one hell of a fun game. The mini-stories were all varied and interesting. I'm looking forward to playing the 3DS remake.

Off topic: Have you noted the recent rise in price of Shin Megami Tensei games for the 3DS? It's insane. Just discovered your channel, I hope you have some SMT 3DS videos around.

My grandson and I are currently playing the original game on a backwards compatible PS3. He's 9 and very much into it. The reading and need for problem solving skills is good mind exercise. Much better than those shooter games or Pokemon. He was actually the one who asked to play it after wanting a change from Skyrim. Watching him play got me interested in playing it again as well. We are currently in the Dune region. I'm not sure about all the changes in the remake, we probably won't buy it since we don't have a 3DS. I wish they would make an updated version or sequel for the PS3 or PS4 though.

Old video but I wanted to say I've never played this remake of VII and am very, very happy to hear about the shard locator. I think it was just after meeting up with Gabo or an island after that I found that I forgot a shard from 2 islands before, that I did NOT know I had forgotten and it took me a few days just to find it. There was not a lot about VII I did not like if I'm to be honest. I like the random encounters and the grind... And also the puzzles of all the Dragon Warriors and Quests I have played. (Not counting 6, 6 can go sit in the corner and die from being forgotten) Dragon Warrior VII was the very first game I ever bought new and was the most expensive (At the time) game I had purchased after Dragon Warrior 4 for 50 or something dollars from a well-missed game store.

Did you know that there was that one fortune telling woman who can give you hints on where to find the next mandatory shard?

There were two postgame dungeons on the original. Was kind of obscure how to get the shard, is all.

playstation one..man that brings back yhe memories..I'm definitely loving the remake. one of the main reasons i love my 3ds is that it has a good selection of the jrpg style of games i loved back in the 90s. (now if there was only a lunar 3 I'd be in heaven)

I feel the exact same way. I just bought my 3ds last year. and its the best thing i have done as far as gaming goes. So many good oldschool jrpgs on the system. And remakes of classics. Cant waint until Dragon Quest XI :)

Thank you for this. I bought the game on launch, because I loved the original and want to support DQ in the states, but wasn't sure when I'd play because I remember the amount of time I invested into it on the PS1. But these updates (for the most part, RIP class system :( ) definitely make me wanna jump into it. I'll have to pop it in when I'm not playing Monster Hunter, while I await FFXV.

Sounds like they butchered the intro, I'll pass on this version. The slow build up made the island feel truly isolated and alone which improved the overall narrative in my opinion, and the puzzles of the temple were to make it feel like something truly important was being protected/hidden away. It would have been much better if they kept the same intro and tossed in some slime battles. The game looks far better graphically, but sadly that seems to be the extent of the improvements. It's like how Lunar Silver Star Story (PSX) is still better than Silver Star Harmony (PSP) despite having outdated graphics.
@frostare8 жыл бұрын
It's still long and it ACTUALLY gives off that feeling even more than the original. Unless of course if you already know what's going to happen.
@OdaSwifteye8 жыл бұрын
The intro sounded just fine to me not that I consider the intro theme to be even remotely worth fretting over. Overture for 8 is the only good one and they really are all the same. I disagree. The original intro unchanged would have made the game too slow for new players. It's back enough when a game has a 2 hour long tutorial but this is even less than that. Original D7 just had you wandering until you figured it out. They clearly got advised on this to the extent to where there was even a 20 hour playthrough made for newbies so they don't get lost or confused. All of this was very smart and the game actually did well with new players.

I feel bad for people that experience lunar with Harmony lol. They just truly do not understand the kind of magic that came from the classic working Designs title. They streamlined all the dungeons, got rid of the over world map, simplified the dialogue and context of the story. Got rid of alot of witty anime humor jokes and replaced the iconic wind nocturne song with something that makes no sense to the story. Not to mention toned the difficulty down considerably where bosses were just a breeze to win. Need i say more??

names of towns and people. I really don't like them getting rid of the first "dungeon" where you find the saints items. The new way just feels weird and out of place. I don't like not being able to run around the rooms with the pedestals, though having them labeled is a nice touch. ( writen before watching) I agree with your video. Will sub.
@UltimaHolyFlare4 жыл бұрын
My only disappointment is we can't rename the item bag in the 3ds remake. Of course, if it had been included, I would've had to get creative to work around Nintendo's word censorship.
