At least in my view currently I'm still trying to beat at least most of the DQ games and while I beaten 1, 2, and 9, I will say currently 5, 3, & 9 are my favorites and maybe 11 will be added in when I continue my Adventure there in the switch version

Not a bad list overall, though I'm surprised 6 is below 7 given 7's length makes it hard to beat. As a composer and at the same time a retrogame-lover/creator, there is also the circumstance i wanted to suck up all the early entries for their greatness overall, but also especially in seeing what they would be able to do with the NES Hardware. it's absolutely mind-blowing. Absolutely pristine pixelart and gorgeous Toriyama artwork, and still greatly represented by those few pixels. What great monster designs! And what Mr. Fugiyama was able to do with the 2a03 sound chip is nothing but breathtaking. Superb compositions and use of those few sound channels the NES had. I think the originals of I-IV are worth playing for that reason alone. I got to play the games in chronological order and you can really feel how everything got more and more polished. Currently i'm playing through Dragon Warrior IV and i'm in awe. Looking forward to V and VI, after which i'm certainly making a break. Great channel by the way! From the games i played yet III is by far my favourite, having great hopes for V which is next. Crafting in XI was one of the best parts of the game for me. It's actually fun and requires some thought once you acquire more of the flourishes. It also gives a reason to explore the world because the recipes and materials are scattered around. Also, the best song in the soundtrack plays when you're at camp!
@davidvinc5 жыл бұрын
I just felt that by the end of the game you would open up a chest and get like 10 recipes at once, then when you got to camp you had to remember what recipes you got, find them in the many lists, hope to God you had the random garbage it called for just to make the weapon that you previously would have just gotten in the chest. And if you didn't have the ingredients you would have to write down exactly what you needed, look up where to find it, warp all over God's green Earth and hope that the spawn points would appear. I really hated it.

DQ5 was not the first game to have players pick a bride and have time truly pass. Phantasy Star 3 on the Sega Genesis did this back in 1990. I mean after playing the DQ11S demo, I didn’t really find crafting to be all that band tbh. If anything I found it fun to meticulously craft my items how I want them to be and make them as pristine as possible, and it’s SUPER convenient since you can not only purchase the materials for the recipe you have, making farming for them unnecessary unless you wanna save cash, but 11S made it so you can craft item ANYWHERE rather than just at campfires. So I personally feel like you were a bit harsh on that front tbh.

IV is the best but I feel like the only person who feels that way. It's not the most grand or epic entry but to me it's easily the most solid and airtight. Every character is likable, the chapter based structure is brilliant and makes all the characters actually feel like... characters rather than just "oh, sure, ill join you I guess" drones of most RPGs. And Psaro is easily the best villain in the franchise due to having actual motivations and being somewhat tragic / sympathetic as well. It feels like a children's book or a fairy tale overall while also being one of the first RPGs that I feel like was truly self-aware / reflecting on the tropes of the genre (see: torneko's chapter). I love 5 and 11 as well but I hope more westerners get around to playing the entire series. Great vid

Your videos are kinda like snacks. I could eat'em constantly. I mean, watch them. My list would be similar, though for me 3 tops over 5, but only for nostalgia's sake and having played 3 with my brothers, naming our team after ourselves. 5 has a much more gripping story and I love the marriage aspect, especially with the last minute proposal in the DS remake... though I still always choose Bianca cause she's blonde like my girlfriend. I like the crafting in 11. It got a lot easier when I realized I could heat the item being crafted multiple times to make strikes do more, allowing my greater control. I enjoyed making +2/+3 weapons and armor fairly consistently. You can ignore it for the early game too, but obviously they intend for you to do it. my one gripe with 11 is I don't like the main character's look. D:

When DQ 6, 7, and 4 landed near the bottom you crushed me 😂 Always loved those games. Haven't played the original 3 or 11. I guess they'll never be moved to DS now so I'll probably have to get a Switch in the future (assuming they remake DQ 1-3 for it)

you could get all of them except 9-11 on your phone and surprisingly they work like really well

Well 6 & 7 I can understand. But yeah. 4 is kinda low. It should be in the top 5 at least. Definitely above 9 IMO.

Another list that is pretty acurate with some differences, biggest with no Dragon Quest 10. Once again, my personal #1 numbered Dragon Quest game is Dragon Quest 8, the 3DS version. At least on this list you mentioned that most including myself believe this is considered the best/most popular of the series. Of course with the 3DS version having new features, cutscenes, quality of life and 2 new endings really make it well worth it. Looking forward to Dragon Quest 3 HD 2D remake, it looks really good. Hope there will be excellent improvements to Dragon Quest 1 and 2 HD 2D remake collection.

I've always liked that Dragon Quest has stuck with swords and sorcery settings and stays closer to pen-and-paper RPGs as opposed to Final Fantasy, which has pretty much gone in a sci-fi direction. My top two favorites DQ games are III and V with IV in a close third place. Growing up, we all played the first game, which was known as Dragon Warrior at the time. It was ubiquitous. I think free versions came with a subscription to Nintendo Power. The second game was a big deal because you had multiple party members and you fought multiple monsters in an encounter. The game had some growing pains for the series, though. It takes forever for your party to become balanced. There's a large world to explore, especially with the ship, but much of it consists of huge landmasses with little else on it but monsters to grind on. Even Alefgard makes an appearance again, but the only places you can visit are the starting town and the Dragon Lord's old castle. But III completely fixed all of those growing pains. The world was expansive and there was so much to do. And it first introduced the day-night mechanic and used it to great effect. Breath of Fire had a day-night mechanic, but it really didn't do anything with it except close the shops at night. But in Dragon Warrior/Quest 3, every town took on a different life when you visited it at night. And there were certain things you could only do at night, like interact with the NPCs in the ghost town or the pirate hideout. The game really revolutionized RPGs.

(I'm emulate it on my Android phone). Love hearing your thoughts on rpg games, it gives me some good ideas on games to play. I tend to have a short attention span and get bored easily unfortunately, this I'm currently playing about 50+ rpg games atm. 😥

I really hope we see some of the remakes for the Dragon Quest series on modern consoles. I'm only able to play the series with rom hacks currently on a retropi. Currently my personal favs are DQ5, DQ8, DQ11 so far. I haven't tried 2, 3, 9 or 10 (obvious reasons) but i hope I'm able to play all of them one day.

Interesting list, surprised how you feel about the crafting in DQ11 (I get it for 9 though). I think it would be the following for me: 1,2,6 ,4,3,9 ,5,7,8 ,11 Surprised how 7 was relatively low, although it’s definitely not the best paced game tbh. (Playing it on 3ds was my first time so that definitely influenced things). And 5,7,8,11 are difficult for me to rank. I think 8 and 11 are equally good and 5 and/ or 7 may rank higher on a good day.

I personally love dragon quest ix. I heard people brought their nintendo ds systems to wonder con in so cal and got tons of maps through tag mode. Sad they didn't have a sequel on the 3ds. They could have so improved on the ideas and the co-op battle mechanics are absolutely fun with a group of friends. I recently repurchased dragon quest ix. ❤

I love 11 so much, yes the weapon making is slow but my God it's amazing and full of good times. My most favorite character is Sylvando cause he's so amazing and has a very interesting storyline of something about him. Also I always wanted to try out Dragon Quest 3 but in the NES version cause it looks fun.

I really loved this list, but probably because it's basically my ranking as well haha. I personally would put DQ3 slightly over V, but a lot of that's personal preference. I'm just glad to see a Western DQ fan that appreciates just how mind-blowingly good DQIII is, even 32 years later.

DQ3 was the very first DQ game I've ever played and even beat. I then went on to DQ1, 2, then beat DQ4 and recently finished DQ 5. Currently, I'm starting out DQ6, and I feel that in my opinion, it's one of the better ones. DQ3 may have been my first DQ game that I've beaten, but I agree that Dragon Quest 5 totally deserves that #1 spot. The story, music, and gameplay are just beautiful! It's my personally favorite DQ game.

I hope I can give a fresh take on why the structure of VI is the way it is and hopefully instill some new appreciation for it. The second half of the game seem random, but all of the events are related to the concept of self-discovery. The purpose of the second half of the game is stated quite clearly right at the beginning when the queen asks you to *find yourself*, both in a literal and metaphorical sense. You do literally find yourself! But the hero also "finds himself" in all the scenarios he completes. They aren't random, they all have a moral and lesson, usually related to dreams and aspirations. The dream metaphors cut deep all throughout the game, it is rather cohesive and internally consistent throughout. To give one example, the town of Aridea contains the moral lesson of knowing "which dreams to chase". The town is distracted by utopian visions of the isle of smiles, to the point where they have forgotten what they actually need to do around the town to survive. The lesson is not to chase unrealistic dreams. "What is to good to be true, is" The scenario with the prince is a pretty straightforward message about conquering your fears to become who you really are. And so on, the scenario of the mermaid has two lessons: 1) follow your dreams even if others don't understand them and 2) know when it can be helpful to give up a dream (where the masked lover has to give up his love in order for her to live a better life). And so on, when the hero solves all these scenarios, he becomes closer to finding himself, and the story culminates in his own self discovery. After finding the statue, he learns who he really is, not just of his ideal self, and yet the journey there to find himself incorporated his ideal self into his real self. Remember, the hero asks himself "are we going to become one or will one of us disappear" - this is the fear of becoming something new, the anxieties changing your old self. I personally think the game is very coherent and very well written, but I think it's the kind of game that because of it's large scope it can be very easy to lose track of the story and thus miss details that make up a larger theme.

God damn another great list. You inspire me to do RPG vids. Anyways, I agree with your list for the most part. DQ5 is not only a great RPG but just one of the best stories ever told. I personally may put DQ4 a little higher but as long as 5 is number 1. Masterfully subverts expectation and I’ve never cared about characters more than in that game.

I love them all, even beat part 2 when I was 12 because the battery in 3 went dead and killed my dark world save and well, I'd beaten part 1 so many times as my parents rented it when I was like 3 or 4 and it's the first game I remember playing anyway Atlus and Hargon can sit and spin... The cave with the tough as nails multi-hit red skeletons, the plateau with the sacrifice monkeys to the shrine as your last safe spot before getting killed and throwing your controller a few times... I would put it above part 6. I just never could like the way 6 played to me and I love DQ7 loads more. Good list my man, that was just my own personal opinion about part 6. Dragon Quest forever, subbed!

11 is my favorite by far. It addresses controversial topics in a tasteful manner like coming out. Ala Sylvando. The ability to change between 2d and 3d is amazing and hearkens back to oldschool DQ. Plus there is so much to do. I love the combat the classes and the progression system. However i disagree with Davids assertion that the crafting is a waste of time. The game offers you an option to buy the needed materials. Its not like its hard to make money in game. In fact its painfully easy. The crafting is rewarding and gives you a sense of achievement when you get your first +3 item. So dont let that dissaude anyone from playing. Try it the characters are fantastic and the voice acting is top notch. Its a must play.

It takes you 150 hours to beat DQ7??? Even the Playstation version the first time I played it didn't take that long for me and I screw around a lot when I play these games so I wasn't trying tp speed through it either. I guess that just depends on the individual but I actually think DQ11 is a longer game than DQ7 when you factor in side content. DQ7 is pretty slim as far as post-game stuff.
