Not necessarily. Most people need to plug their electric bass into an amp, but some acoustic basses exist that function like an acoustic guitar

I see people shredding on bass, guess they are going through modes as their fingers never seem to hit a wrong note?

I believe so. And they are using all kinds of intervals and grooves within those modes of the key the song is in. And, sometimes playing a mode that doesn’t line up with the root note of the chord that the guitar player or keyboard player is playing at a particular moment.
