You are right. I play guitar. I play FAR more complicated tunes. Diminished chords, IV, VI, II progressions across multiple scales and modes. This one sounds basically the best...and it's 4 simple chords in one key. Sometimes simple is good.

i grew up in California. Didn't know a thing about this song. Then I went to college at the University of North Carolina and every frat party I wasn't cool enough to get into would blare this song as I walked by on Friday or during the last week of classes. Didn't think about it. Then I went to a party at a bar with my friends and they all loved this song. I asked this cute girl to dance to it and I finally got it. Nothing ever happened with the girl. But the song stuck with me. Just around this time, Darius's version came out and I played it on repeat. Now, anytime I am at any thing in the Carolinas, block parties, weddings, karaoke, I see folks gather in a circle and sing this song. And it brings me back to my college days, dancing with that girl, watching games with my friends. It's in my bloodstream now. It's part of my musical DNA. i first heard this song some years ago when I was working in a factory. They pump music into the factory to help you work and amiss the grinding of the machinery I heard it and it jump out of the noise and landed right in my heart. It's been one of my favorite life songs ever since and I listen for it on our local Country station. Folks used to laugh at me because I'm old lady, Black and like Country music.
