Most historians agree on the fact that any half-decent leader could've easily stopped Alexander before he could even enter the Persian territories. Darius III was greatly incompetent and a giant coward! During the last stand where he fled the country and left a competent general Ariobarzanes in charge, they nearly defeated Alexander's army at the peak of their power! Alas by that point it was too late and the defending Persian army was simply too weak compared to Alexander's

@skywindow67644 жыл бұрын
You must mean the Scythians, in both cases. The Thracians -like the ones who killed Aristagoras- were Scythians too. In ancient greek art on pots the Persians wear the pointy Phrygian knit-cap (a beanie) which must be the same as the Scythians'. By big-hat (correctly meaning sun-hat) Greeks, the Persians meant the Macedonians...

You make an excellent point about Darius's rise, which is how he tried to make himself related to Cyrus the Great. Cyrus left such an effect on not only the Empire he created, but also on Persia itself. For 2,500 years all the way up to the last Shah of Persia, the many various rulers of Persia enforced their legitimacy by claiming to be descended from Cyrus the Great, and that they were continuing his legacy. And as we learn in this video, Darius was the first to do that. As for another detail about his rise, the good news is that the Persians had soap back then so after fondling Darius's horse, at least Oebares could wash his hands.
