These violent delights is one of my favorite books this year. I just adored the writing and find this type of unhealthy/obsessive dynamic fascinating. I'm on the hunt to find other books with a similar character dynamic
@PlantBasedBride
@PlantBasedBride 10 ай бұрын
It was really well done! I’m wracking my brain for similar books. Monstrilio has that dark literary vibe with a significant theme of grief but is more about the parent child relationship than romantic relationships. It’s fantastic, though! I also feel like Luster could fit in with those though less extreme in its violence and it’s more about Edie’s toxic relationship with herself.

I didn't like The Silent Patient (writing, flat/red herring characters, non-surprising twist), but I wanted to give the author another try, so I put this book on hold at the library. Thanks for your review-it confirmed that The Maidens probably won't work any better for me.

I feel like everyone was so intrigued by Ordinary Monsters as a concept last year and then no one on booktube really talked about it after release. I just remember a couple mediocre reviews. So I’m so glad to see your positive review for it and feel excited to read it again!!

That’s true. I forgot I bought it because everyone’s talking about it as an anticipated release, but I agree. I’m not sure I’ve seen any reviews from people who have actually read it. Maybe everyone else was in the same boat as me, with it on their TBR pile languishing because of its length, lol

I am someone who loves reading but doesn't have the time, especially now that I am working again. So I love listening to you book reviews and spoilers. Making a mental list of what would be fun to read because I know by the time I get to it, I would have forgotten the spoilers you shared. I enjoy fiction and fantasy, so when you talked about Ordinary Monsters and shared you thoughts and didn't give spoilers, I toldy husband that this is a book I needed for my upcoming birthday (oct) or for a Christmas present. Who will know when I could read (or finish) it, but I got very excited with your description and after reading a horror during the summer, I would like to try dark academia. Thank you for these type of videos and sharing your thoughts.

Oh god. It’s fall, so TVD is popping up again. I hated that book so much. It’s so pretentious. I DNF’d it around 20%. Can’t stand the characters also. I love beautiful language also, but not this type.

Hi. I read These Violent Delights a while back. Parts were confusing to me, parts were very very good, some parts dragged. I'd like to know why other people feel it is pretentious because I have heard this book described as such. Was it the writing style (long winding sentences) or did u feel the author was too heavy handed getting his themes across?

@@strawberrylime33 it’s trying to be this deep intellectual book with it’s philosophical (or attempt to be philosophical) passages. But it all felt flat to me and empty. The Secret History did this correctly. The thing that frustrated me the most is, fine, I can accept this wordy heady passages in the classroom setups, but they are also EVERYWEHERE, even when just changing clothes or lounging on the bed, where there is little reason to be philosophical (or at least little relevance to be). It’s just so pretentious. I just personally hate these types of books.
