I feel like anyone who really loves dark academia has read and loved the Secret History. Especially those of us that started with it really know what we look in something that is considered dark academia 📚

I was in Waterstones a few months ago and they had a whole table just for The Secret History and a woman shouted, “excuse me everyone, if I can have your attention for a few seconds. I truly believe everyone needs to read this book, so buy it. Thank you” and then put the book down and walked off 😂 I feel like I might start doing this with my favourite books 📚

I really want to love Dark Academia, it's my kind of vibes, but so many of these were 3-4 stars for me. I'm a If We Were Villains over Secret History person, but They Never Learn was excellent and Truly Devious is one of the rare YA I absolutely loved.

I am so happy to see Catherine House on this list!!! Absolutely an all-time favorite dark academia, I am absolutely feral for it. Read it last October and still dreaming of it every day. Breaks my heart it doesn't get the love it deserves.

Have you ever read A Lesson in Vengeance and The Cloisters? They are both dark academia books and I don't think a lot of people talk about them but I loved them and I think you would too!

highly recommend the society for soulless girls by laura stevens! it's a sapphic supernatural dr jekyll and mr hyde inspired ya dark academia, i've never seen anyone talk about it and it deserves more recognition!!!

I really want to love dark academia, but, so far, I've dnfed everything I've tried. Admittedly, I've only tried three and they were for different reasons. Secret History, couldn't stand any of the characters. Unlikable characters are fine, but I still have to want read about them. Ninth House, the bathroom scene. I read past this point, but realistically only because I'm terrible at dnfing. Babel, I felt like I was in the wrong head space. I do plan to give this another try.

This is me too! There's definitely a dark academia out there for me but I thought Babel was so boring and too long (and I love a long book!) and I hated Plain Bad Heroines with an absolute passion, wish I'd DNFd them both 😂 but I'm determined to find something that works for me 😂😂 good luck in your search!

Apart from Babel, I don't think I've ever had more opposite opinions 😂 From your list I've only not read the Ruth Ware and True Crime Story, but I only agree with Catherine House, Babel and In My Dreams. hahahaha. Though I think Catherine House is pretty tame and Bunny by Mona Awad is the one I'd really recommend there.

I'd say some of the short stories really captured perfectly the vibes and the content we want from dark academia (not perfect, some were quite disappointing but so worth it overall to scratch that itch during this season !)
