In my sense it is absolutely not an horror movie. It’s fantastic science fiction and a masterpiece of art.

LOVED this show!!! AMAZING! Each episode drew me in a bit more. It was a slow burn in the first half of the season, but then... it all pulled together and the last episode of the season was superb. I didn’t want it to end! Can’t wait for the next season.

I never realized how much of the cast and crew knew English. It's weird, actually. I expected a large language barrier with a majority of the cast, at least lol.
@phangirlable7 жыл бұрын
Unlike Americans and Brits most people in the rest of the world are fluent in at least two languages, their own and English, sometimes even French or Spanish.
@barbaro2677 жыл бұрын
You mean in developed countries with government-funded public education? In America, you have to have at least 2 years of foreign language in high school (the same language), and 2 semesters/quarters of foreign language in college. We at least mandate students to be exposed to these languages and learn them to a certain extent. My only problem is that there isn't one language that could be designated as America's secondary language because the country is so big, with different areas influenced by different languages and cultures (French, German, Spanish (Mexico), etc). If there was such a language, then I would love it if children were taught that secondary language as early as preschool (due to the critical language learning period, which is 2-5 years of age). But alas, foreign languages are simply not as prioritized in the American public school system.

English can't be a language barrier since it's super easy compared to other languages ..here in my country Tunisia we are fluent at two foreign languages french and english ( obligatorly taught in schools) besides our native language arabic which is the hardest even for us .. and we have also a fourth optional language at high school for 2 years ( I personally chose German)

The funny thing is that everyone absolutely loves this show expect maybe half of the German critics. This is an interesting phenomena. Every time Germany produces a good show or movie, even worse, an exceptional or brilliant one, and even more worse, a successful and internationally acclaimed one, some German critics will hate on it out of reflex because they absolutely cannot stand anything German to be successful or better than mediocre. If it's really good then they are almost eaten up from the inside with self-loathing and if it's a show that is not about WWII, the holocaust or the DDR they will lose their fricking mind.
@redtoffey7 жыл бұрын
I think that's a bit of an exaggeration but there's certainly an element of truth, though I don't think this is confined to Germany alone. It's generally a trait for a lot of cultures, within Europe too, to be more self-critical than they are critical of something foreign. It's a bit like when you criticise your kids more than outsiders will, for their betterment usually. Also, a German film or TV series breaking national boundaries and going global is not a very frequent case so usually it gets a lot of praise and encouragement form US/UK critics who dominate the global film/tv landscape, partly because some variety is always nice. So it's a combination of two effects, highly critical German critics and a bit more lenient US/UK critics. And never forget that critics always love to be controversial. It's kinda their "thing".

Interesting observation. If you look through IMDB user reviews for Dark you'll often see a negative review with a 'by the way I'm German' qualifier inserted in it.

Similar thing happened to Netflix's The Witcher from the Polish side. I'm not sure about Polish critics as I don't live there anymore, nor do I care about them, but from what I've heard: a) critics talk shit about the show and normal viewers' reviews are much better and b) there's quite a handful of comments by Polish people that the show is really bad, that they made horrible changes to it, that it sucks in general because it's "not Slavic enough" (even though the original books had lots of Germanic/Norse kind of vibe), that it was made in English and it's an American show and so on. With the "btw I'm Polish so I know mah shit" kind of part. Again, it's a typically Polish behavior that many of my countrymen display even in their daily lives - everybody should have at least a little bit worse life situation than they do. And if they kept talking about how shitty The Witcher was gonna be, based on stuff like casting (OmG FRinGiLLa iS bLaCk WhaT A DiSgRacE), they won't be able to admit that it's not that bad after all. Thus being said, Dark is my favorite show of all time and I can't really imagine another show taking its place in my heart any time soon. I'm also so happy that it got well deserved international attention. And it's always nice to see comments like "I don't know where all the 'German is a terrible, harsh language' are coming from, haven't seen the whole first season of Dark, I really love it, it's beautiful"

@Norman Bates idk if it’s the same for everyone but when I’ve been listening to someone with a very distinct accent for some time I kind of “absorb” their accent. it’s a subconscious thing, it happens in our native languages too but I think it’s more common when speaking a language we learnt later in life

Sun That’s cause English is just lazy German ;)
@rattletop7 жыл бұрын
really? or just joking?
@michaelcullen53087 жыл бұрын
Sun Sort of really. English is descended from German. It used to be called Anglo-Saxon, named after two Germanic tribes. There are almost no sounds in English that German speakers can't make. There are fewer rules in English, the grammar is easier, and no genders. Basically, lazy German.

@jeffreykey33167 жыл бұрын
Well Debbie is correct. Horrifying situation yes but for this show to fit into the symbolic, American definition of horror that is not an accurate category for this show. Maybe more of a thriller / drama and labeling this as a horror could turn a lot of people away so I really hope more channels do not label this show as such because that's not what this show is.
@Sheyvanrocks7 жыл бұрын
It has Horror Elements. Its a Character Driven Drama with Horror and Sci-Fi Elements. Its just that the Horror is truly subtle, psychological and deep, instead of cheap gory jumpscare crap.

@honigkuchenpferd12375 жыл бұрын
Everyone has an accent, you can't have no accent. So for example in German: “Hochdeutsch” is considered as no accent, but in fact, it is a accent since it’s a certain type of pronouncing something.:) and I’m as a German think that you can guess from listening to him that he his a German, so he has an accent, a German one. but that's just my opinion (but I have to say, I’m a bit jealous of his accent)
@HannahNguyen19954 жыл бұрын
In all honesty, even though the British accent is taught in English classes in Germany, students just naturally gravitate towards the American accent more. It's easier to pick up because of the media influence that is primarily from the US.
