3:42 I sometimes think that M3 was designed to make people's stomachs turn in sorrow and disgust. Hinawa dying in the first chapter, Claus going missing (then you having to endure the relentless onslaught of Claus, brainwashed by the Pigmask Army), and having to just sit there as he chooses to "Game Over" himself right in front of you. Honestly, I do wonder what other messed up stuff Itoi had planned before it was scrapped.
@ThaneGaming2 жыл бұрын
For sure! I think he succeeded in that design goal with the GBA version, even if his original scope wasn't fully realized. Fassad & Salsa's uncomfortable relationship is another great example of this twisted feeling he wanted to convey; M3 is so effective at evoking complicated emotional responses with storytelling techniques unique to video games.

I recalled a Mother/Earthbound youtuber theorizing about this "destroyed onett" screenshot (@15:20) possibly being a early version of New Pork City (along with being from Mother 3's ending and NOT the escape spaceships from Leder's speech.) I remember him explaining how there are small callbacks to Mother 2 in the final GBA version of New Porky City which shows Porky being obessed with his past, the N64 version originally had this idea being pushed more further with New Pork City being a recreation of the towns and cities from Eagleland. There is also other screenshots of the early N64 version of New Porky City which supports this theory. Also, even if this was supposed to be a "destroyed onett" then how in the heck would the Monotoli building be there---?

What I love about Mother 3 is that the game's world is rich in detail. Every villager has a story and a personality and all of them change over time! However, I feel like there still room for improvement in a sequel.
@ThaneGaming2 жыл бұрын
That's my absolute favorite thing about MOTHER 3 as well, the attention to detail is unmatched! The sheer amount of missable dialogue still blows me away, most everyone has something new to say even after the most subtle plot developments. I would love to see Itoi's detective idea fully fleshed out for a sequel/spiritual successor!

@Thane Gaming I prefer EarthBound’s more grounded world, but I also really liked the nuance in the character writing in Mother 3! I just need a sequel that blends both together well. I don’t know much about Oddity, but maybe that game could do it!
@tempest60272 жыл бұрын
the ironic thing about them saying they were afraid to make mother 4 because of mother 3's difficulties is that oddity, previously called mother 4, was in development hell for about 10 years before being cancelled
@ThaneGaming2 жыл бұрын
It's very fitting, that's for sure. Anything that calls itself a MOTHER game has to be doomed to some development Hell, and each sequel spends a little longer in it 😅 With that said, I'm personally pretending Oddity doesn't exist until another major update comes out, and even then I'll be skeptical until a playable demo is released because I have been following the project for all these years...

The cameraman also exaggerating it's size to 40cm would be in-line with this gag. Like a more complicated version of an innocent creature casting a big scary looking shadow.

The N64 Claymen remind me of those living puppets from THAT Unico movie.

Over the years most ppl have claimed that Itoi himself said Mother 64 and Mother 3 are the same, or that Mother 3 did more than Mother 64 ever could, etc. But from the more we get leaked of Mother 64, it seems more and more like they're different games.
@ThaneGaming2 жыл бұрын
That's a great point! While the two games fundamentally explore very similar themes & concepts, it's all the side stories and details that differentiate them (and it's MOTHER 3's little details that make the game so special). Itoi had a different mindset at the time he initially wrote the script too, so while the core experience likely remained intact, we know it would've been filled with new and different ideas not present in the MOTHER 3 we know now.
@aortaplatinum2 жыл бұрын
Based on what we've seen in trailers and interviews, I think the N64/DD game would have had largely the exact same story as the GBA version, just with more content and an expanded narrative. Like for instance, that famous scene of Claus and Lucas in the minecart was very likely between Hinawa's death and the boys being discovered in the river, with Hinawa having sent the boys off in the minecart to get them away from the Drago chimera that would kill her. Since GBA is both far more limited in it's capabilities and GBA carts can hold much less data than an N64 cart and *WAY* less than a DD disc, it would make sense to cut some of the superlative stuff. The "betraying the player" idea is interesting, because depending on who you ask, that goal was perfectly achieved by the ending of the GBA version, and the original console version of the game likely had the same story beat, but with more intense presentation and maybe lacking the epilogue where you walk around as the END text and learn the world was successfully recreated.

While I love learning about this kind of stuff, and would be interested in seeing more beta things and/or a fan recreation, Mother 64 seems like it really would not have been my cup of tea, and that would be basically it for any interest I have in the Mother series. It's precisely Mother 3's specific brand of angst and storytelling that got my attention, and while that's certainly not entirely gone (the chimeras, mainly), it seems like it sure would have hit different, in a way I wouldn't find as compelling, personally... This is a great example of why RPG Maker type games are so important. Itoi had multiple ideas that went through a lot of iterations for Mother 3, and yet the corporation stars never lined up for most of those ideas. Instead of wasting time with Nintendo, a person like him should just make their own games and release them on Steam. Can you imagine if we had half a dozen Mother games rather than what we got?
@Birdsflight447 ай бұрын
Do you understand how important Itoi and the Mother team are to Nintendo though? Imagining them going off and making RPG Maker games instead means that gaming as a whole is way worse. They had their fingers in all the pies in the 90s, so in some roundabout way, if you like anything Nintendo (and kinda by extension PlayStation because of that failed deal lol) you do NOT want to butterfly effuck around with it

@@Birdsflight44 Artists make deals with megacorporations because of the promise of reach. But when the corporation's promises turn into endless red tape and excuses, it's time to cut the cord. Nintendo wouldn't have even release Mother 3 in the States if not for the herculean efforts of people totally unaffiliated with Nintendo. You're mistaking the corporation itself for the creative power of the handful of employees in the game dev division. I would argue that RPG Maker games are having more of a creative cultural impact than Nintendo churning out tired franchises to aging soyboys. In fact those old Nintendo games more closely resemble modern RPG Maker games than the shiny and safe corporate products they're making now. Sorry if I'm rambling.

I can understand that. Since the MOTHER 3 we got is one of my favorite games ever I wouldn't want another version of it to have existed instead, but the 64 version is endlessly fascinating to me and I really hope the demo somehow surfaces

@@ThaneGaming I concur for Donkey Kong 64! Some of the areas in the game actually scared me quite a bit more than the Nintendo 64 Zelda games did.

It's refreshing to hear from those who see the potential in the 64 version! I personally wouldn't say I'd rather it have been released for that console as I love it on GBA, but I think it could've easily been a contender for best N64 game, and I really really want to see the demo surface one day

@@SuperStar-ss1pn Itoi, Miyamoto, and Iwata themselves estimated the game being around 30-60% complete, but then they agreed the actual number didn't really matter. The scenario was finished, all that remained was "finding the overall balance, finishing the directing, and polish". They did have some kind of playable version of MOTHER 64 for reference during the GBA game's development too! I believe it still exists somewhere--whether we ever see it or not is a different story 😬

I will say as dark as this game looks, idk about it's graphics like most n64 games I don't think it would've aged well. So in a funny kind of way the troubled development and then shifting to gba actually kinda helped mother 3 be more memorable imo

@@AnAverageGoblin M3 on the GBA is basically the abridged version, I get it. But that still doesn't mean it isn't a good game in it's own right.
