One small thing that made me look at the hero of time in a whole other light was the hug he got from cremia. ‘You feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Sigh…you could get used to this.’ I love how much this humanised link as he grew up an orphan and the closest thing he had to a parental figure was a tree that died in front of him. This was his first time experiencing motherly affection and it’s so bittersweet.

I interpreted it as something much less wholesome. Now that Link is more mature, he started to develop an interest in women, so he enjoyed getting a face full of cleavage. I gotta be honest, that 4th day glitch is absolutely disturbing. It feels like a perverse, broken reality where the moon did actually fall and wiped society out and shattered reality itself. I struggle to put it into words. It is just...wrong. Even for a glitch.
@LilacMonarch2 жыл бұрын
The glitch makes sense when you know how the game works; it was originally intended to be a full 7 days long and this glitch is an artifact of that. The moon is extremely far away, presumably where it would have been on the original first day and left in the code as there was no real reason to remove it. But all the characters operate on strict schedules that determine where they are and what they're doing, so loading up an empty day makes an empty world. Even knowing all that though, it still feels creepy. It's not just a beta level bare of anything beyond the terrain, this puts you in fully fleshed out locations that are simply robbed of their life.

Ocarina & Majora are phenomenal games, but man if Romani & Cremia’s dynamic isn’t just the most heartbreaking thing. You’ve got 2 sisters in their own after the deaths of both their parents, with Cremia doing her best to make ends meet. Just like Link in Ocarina, she has to force herself to mature quicker to take on all the responsibilities of Romani Ranch. The context of the Chateau Romani beverage and letting Romani drink it is so dark. Anyone with a younger sibling knows how frustrating it can be to worry about your siblings at times. You’ll bicker with them, and some times you want nothing to do with them, but you still want the best for them. Cremia’s frustration with Romani-especially prior to “them” coming down to the ranch and kidnapping her-is pretty realistic; the uptight elder sibling who had to mature quicker than they’d have liked to, just out of the desire to protect the younger sibling. There’s the aspect of her saying “when you’re older,” denying giving the younger sibling what they want just for their safety that really makes Cremia feel more realistic. When I first played Majora’s Mask and saw the sisters in the bar after learning about the alcoholic properties of the milk, it made me tear up a bit understanding why Cremia let Romania have the drink. As stated in the video, in the final hours of a 3 day cycle in the game, we see how all the characters process their impending demise, and whether or not they can accept death and how they even will. Cremia letting her sister drink the Chateau Romani in the hopes that it’ll dull her senses enough or cause her to pass out JUST so she won’t be aware of the world’s end is bittersweet. By that point, she’s resigned herself to that fate, but even in the end she wants to keep her sister naive to their fate. It’d be a mercy if she had her sister drink her fill just so she dies in her sleep from alcohol poisoning, before they’re engulfed by the inferno from the Moon’s descent and the world’s collapse. The writing of Majora’s Mask is just fascinating to me!

Honestly, I'd argue it is THE most tragic story about an individual in all of gaming. While the standard rules of time travel would mean that nothing done in a previous loop would count as having happened, there's something weird about Majora's Mask's time travel - for example, while you apparently do need to rescue each of the four giants by completing their respective temples, and the four regions remain blighted until and unless you refight the temple's boss in the current loop, you can still summon all the giants you've ever rescued, regardless of which loop they were rescued in. And then the ending includes little epilogues showing the happy endings for the various quests that you completed to get masks, but not the ones you didn't get the corresponding masks for, and they appear regardless of which loop you got their mask in. This means that some things carry over from other loops, and that the post-victory timeline isn't simply the continuation of the final loop, but some sort of hybrid of multiple loops. It also suggests that you can't conclude that anyone actually died in any loop where Link hid under a bed somewhere and did nothing - whatever's happening is more confusing than simply jumping to a different timeline each time.

1:07:54 You can save in 3 days the characters that will not be directly saved by ending Majora and leave alone the characters that will be saved incidentally by ending Majora For example: Anju and Kafei, Monkey, Lulu´s egg´s, THAT invisible man, Pamela father, the seahorse, Cremia Ranch, trade all the Deku flowers, win the lottery!, and some others

This video really helped me understand a lot more aspects about these two games that I missed as an 8 year old when I first played them. It's just crazy to think that a Zelda game would contain such mature and intricate themes. What's more impressive is that this whole game was made in the span of a single year. The passion the developers must have had for this game is incredible. Now I have an unexpected urge to go back and replay both games. Great video btw. I didn't even realize it was an hour and 24 minutes, it was that immersive.

Every time I listen or play this game, the side quests always squeeze the life out of my heart. The 3 dead, the mummy father, the zoras stolen babies, the children running below the moon, Romani being given alcohol because it’s her last day alive, the couple getting married as their last action before death, etc. Majoras Mask is a solid, powerful 11/10

Even after like the 200 years or so this game is out, there is still so much to learn and so many details in the townsfolk behaviour. It is truly impressive how much story and worldbuilding fit inside that tiny data storage of the cardridge.

Great video! One detail that should’ve been in the honorable mentions is the monkey at wood fall temple. IIRC if you show up to the deku palace on the third day you see a cutscene of the monkey being dipped in a vat and removed with dead eyes.

This was masterful! One of the most thoughtful analysis of these two amazing games, specially Majora's Mask. It's one of my favorite artworks of all time and it left quite a persistent mark on my imagination ever since my childhood, in subtle ways that still reflect upon my visual imagination and art to this day. I think no other game or interactive media ever came close to capturing such a peculiar dream-like state or quasi-reality such as Majora's. It's definitely something unique. I think the Banjo Kazooie series from the N64 would provide a nice next installment for you on these videos as well! Subscribed! Best regards

@@ThaneGaming I'm pretty sure u know but Majora's Mask only had 9-12 month deadline. The only way to create a worthy sequel to a game that's almost always rated a top 10 greatest games of all time even now in such a short time is to use unused assets, I prefer Majora's Mask. If I remember correctly at the end of the game the Happy Mask Salesman has 2 masks: one of Mario and one of Leonardo from the Ninja Turtles
@RavenRedwood2 жыл бұрын
The Mask's power ultimately consuming those who yearn to possess it feels inspired by Tolkien's One Ring... the happy mask salesman still seemed to be driven by it, despite not actually putting it on. Or maybe... he did. 🔥

I'm very happy to read this, and that this video helped get you through a dark time! Honestly, you can't really go wrong as far as which Zelda you want to play as your first. These stories stand on their own, and most of the time it's a different incarnation of Link between games, anyway. Play whichever one looks most appealing to you! Which game console(s) do you have?
@nman551 Жыл бұрын
@@ThaneGaming hmm I have a Nintendo switch, and a 3DS. So I could probably play those ds games, and of course ocarina of time and Majora’s mask on 3DS. Then on the switch I definitely should play breath of the wild, with how anticipated the sequel to that game is.
@ThaneGaming Жыл бұрын
@@nman551 Those are three of the best choices you could go with, in my opinion! You may hear criticisms of the 3DS remaster of Majora's Mask specifically online, but I'd honestly suggest playing it anyway. This version was made to be much easier (you can save at any moment, rather than ONLY being able to save after resetting time), and some fans were annoyed that many of the sidequests now spell out what you're supposed to do for example. That's all fair, but it's largely the same game, and I'm personally glad it exists as a way for newcomers to experience the story without having to deal with some of the original's crypticness. Let me know what you wind up going with--most would recommend starting with either Breath of the Wild or Ocarina, but you can also play Majora as your first if you want, like me!

I'm pretty sure that, to borrow a term from the Elder Scrolls, a "Dragon Break" or timeline merging occurs. Certain masks add extra cut scenes to the ending including the Postman's hat, Couple's Mask and the Blast Mask. If you save the bomb shop lady on the night of the first day you cannot complete Kafei and Anju's Side quest as Sakon never appears a the Curiosity Shop on the second night.
