You've nailed what I enjoyed about DKC3: it was more whimsical and wondrous in its intro, because you'd played two games already, it was time for something new. You then uncover what's going on and things get as dark as the previous games, but they don't start there.

@ThaneGaming2 жыл бұрын
Whether you watched these back in 2017 or are here for the first time, thank you and welcome! I put a lot of work into revamping these episodes by replacing low-quality clips with better footage, fixing mistakes in the narration, and adding more detail when necessary (as an example, I’ve now pointed out the mounted Kremling head/Taxidermied Winky the Frog in Cranky’s Monkey Museum, and the idea that Diddy & Dixie’s prison in the DKC 2 game over screen could be an oven. Mr. X and Kerozene make brief cameos too, hinting at their roles in the game. See if you can spot them)! I adjusted the audio as best as I could without re-recording, by cutting away clicks & pops in the voiceover (I used to edit without headphones, so I wasn’t aware of these annoyances at the time lol). I corrected as many of these as I could individually, then ran the entire MP3 through Audacity’s Spitfish & normalized the track. The end result is OK and much better than the original uploads, though I know it isn't perfect. Sorry to audiophiles listening to this! Despite that, I am still happy with the overall script and a lot of the original editing from these episodes, so I hope many DKC fans can experience the Dark Aspects of Rare’s trilogy for the first time.

Still a good game but not a great game.

I wished Nintendo would double down on producing Donkey Kong Country titles like they use to do years ago. It's baffling how a series has more care and better fluid/dynamic platforming than New Super Mario, but too many people sleep on the games just because they treat it like a Mario clone. Also the various DK side games; Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, King of Swings, Diddy Kong Racing, etc Those were great as well.

FINALLY Someone else acknowledged how good Water World is! It’s been my favorite track in the series for how well it suits the tone of the game. If I’m being honest that song kind of summarizes my feelings toward DKC3. The muted color scheme and oddly cartoony but menacing designs of the enemies mixed with what is strangely the most atmospheric music of the trilogy, come together to create a presentation that I found to be… uncanny valley. The third boss, squirt, was also really creepy. A slugs mug hidden behind a waterfall is just… no thanks. The game does not really creep me out anymore but It can still sometimes be a bit off feeling.
@bubbythebear68912 жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly. DKC 2 has a more threatening theme, and is arguably darker, but the third is creepier. It's kinda like how people are creeped out more by things that are meant to be friendly rather than scary. Like a ventriloquist dummy vs a Jason Voorhees Spirit Halloween animatronic.

Fun fact, David Wise composed the music for "Pirates!" on NES. He then reused/remixed that theme song for the final boss K. Rool battle at the end of DKC. When I was a kid, I had both those games and was wondering what that catchy pirate song was that all these games were using. I spent years trying to find out (no internet) before I later discovered it was unique to the games.

I've been fighting the good fight and trying to convince people that DKC3 is good for the past few years now. Your comment on the theme of exploration helps me clarify it even further! I've been arguing that DKC3 is "a DKC platformer....pushed as far as it can into being an adventure game" - think about how sprawling some of the maps are. How often you'll criss-cross around the maps in later levels, or just find cool things in hidden corners for no other reason than to encourage exploration. Plus with the map, overworld secrets, the brothers bear, there's just so much....adventuring to do! And you point out that the music and themes encourage it too - this is a new land to explore and there's a story of industrial encroachment unfolding throughout. I know it's not as technical of a platformer as DKC2, but I love 3 so damn much for being so weird. It absolutely made my christmas day haul in 1996 and it still brings a smile to my face to this day.

With error screens, the second game uses the castle music, which makes it feel like the police are gonna march in and arrest you for potentially pirating your game. The third game using the *boss battle theme* makes it feel like something is going to go SERIOUSLY wrong with your game and possibly your entire console if you don’t turn the power off quickly. (Before the police storm into your house and arrest you for allegedly pirating your game). Also dark is the original theme that the creators came up with for the mine levels in the first game … type in ‘Misty Menace 1994 E3’ and see what I mean … think the Skyward Sword Guardian theme slowed down, and with a creeping sense of dark terror . . .

DK, Diddy, Dixie, Tiny, Kiddy, Lanky, and Chunky are all playable, while the other Kongs lend their services like in the DKC trilogy. One of the users thought it was a good idea to have, but wasn't sure wether Kiddy should come back since lots of fans hate him for, almost no reason. Nice work, looking forward to more vids.Minor correction early on, the story being in the strategy guide may be true (i have no idea on that) but i'm certain it was included in the Instruction manual too. You sound relatively young but you may already know all of this, please ignore if thats the case.If not i'll give you a pointer on retro games. It was very common for most, if not all story to be included in the instruction manuals. I can understand why you'd think some of the images for DKC were exclusively in a guide or magazine as promotional material but it was all in the instruction book too. With DKC 1 i remember it even had Cranky Kong on a bunch of pages, doing his usual thing of mocking either the devs or the player but i think he gave a few hints too, as a sort of reward for reading it. Sometimes in retro games , very rarely you'd get a cutscene if you left it on the title screen, for example LTTP did, which is fascinating to watch btw but LTTP also had some expanded story, which basically tells the beginning portion of the game but in detail, complete with hand drawn art to immerse yourself in it's instruction book. As you might have guessed the reason it was common to have story in booklets was that data space was often extremely limited plus many games simply didn't suit a cutscene not warrant the time or effort. Another game, one we all likely know, Super Mario Bros ,includes info such as "the mushroom people were turned into blocks by King Koopa (Bowser)" which would technically mean Mario killed lots of Toads lol One of the best Instruction Manuals on SNES would be F-Zero.In that one, it was basically a comic book following Captain Falcon and his bounty hunting attempts and his reason for entering the deadly race. As you can imagine by this essay (sorry! Lol) i grew up back then and reading instruction manuals was a big part of my gaming experience. I'd buy a game from my local town which was a hours journey away by bus and in that time i'd slowly, deliberately and carefully examine each page, look at it's art, reading it's story, learning the controls......it was like an appetiser. Of course, these days most games have tutorials built in and the need for manuals means they are all but obsolete. As you dig into other games for review purposes, remember to check the manuals, as most have been scanned online for preservation purposes.
@ThaneGaming2 жыл бұрын
Ah thank you, I misspoke! I meant to say instruction booklet--that is a scan of the one you're talking about with Cranky popping in with sarcastic comments & hints. I also used to read instructions manuals on the way home, and even at night before I slept just to take in more of the game worlds, I loved them. Though I'm 26, so I don't remember actually reading the inserts until N64 & GameCube. Wario World was a fun one, it had a two-page spread detailing the anatomy of Wario with commentary by Wario lol I'm really happy they're archived online too, even Nintendo has PDFs to download for a lot of NES and SNES games on their site. Did not know F-Zero had an especially cool manual, I'll have to check it out!

I was hoping that your videos on the first 2 games would mention the subtle hints of the Kremlings and Kongs being a parallel to the Europeans arriving in America and their effects on the Natives. The low number of Kongs, the empty tree top villages, the old Kremling temples, etc. One can theorize that the Kremlings' ancestors had invaded before and wiped out the majority of Kongs. The Kremling temples may have been built (willingly or unwillingly) by the inhabitants who believed the more advanced invaders were gods (like how some Native Americans saw the gun-wielding Europeans). By DKC1, K.Rool steals the banana hoard to potentially wipe out the last few remaining Kongs so he can start properly colonizing the Island and take all its resources. Truly a dark aspect hidden underneath the first 2 DKC games.

DK Country trilogy are games I can genuinely call beautiful and life changing. It's not dark.. I would not agree with hat comment whatsoever.. I'd call it realistic. The villain is like a dictator and he's truly evil. Which that's a good thing, cause it helps children distinguish what is good and what is evil. You wanna teach your child how to be and how to not be. These video games are made for kids in the end, so I'm glad they always kept responsible in teaching kids simple "be good, and don't be evil" stories. Today's stuff is seriously dark, you see kids stuff being about worshipping evil very regularly, or at least about giving evil a chance. There's this show called Descendents that's seriously f'd up if you read their lyrics to their songs. Stuff that brings confusion to kids, raising them in a unsure grey area of what is good and what is evil.. instead of good/evil being crystal clear to children. I feel like these older games like dkc and others teach kids what is good and what is evil so much better than modern.

Hey I appreciate your comment, it's clear you care a lot about this topic! I don't want you to think that by talking about these games' darker elements I'm trying to suggest they shouldn't be played by children, or that they're immoral in any way. I love this trilogy and think it's perfectly fine to experience at any age! I just enjoy talking about family-oriented media that isn't afraid to take on a heavier tone. I use "dark" in reference to the scarier & melancholic themes of these games (which are beautiful, as you mentioned), not in the sense that they're blasphemous

SM64 has a lot of dark stuff as well. Maybe you could do a video about that.

Mario Odyssey is dark. Mario's new power in this game isn't a cape, it isn't a cool dinosaur.. it's mind control, where he puts a hat on their heads and then you can control them, it's like you brainwash them, and when they return they're all puzzled and confused. That's Mario's new power, that's kinda weird bro. There is more details but it's a lot to type. The game also has this weird air about it, that it wants me to feel for Bowser in a way.. without making it obvious clearly. And in the end sure enough you play AS Bowser, they designed it to feel and be awesome. Bowser is not a anti hero, he is a villain, like King k rool. These modern games are pushing nothing but darkness and confusion. There's so much more, but it's way to much to type. People aren't being paid to expose the games of modern. Games of the past are the competition of games of modern, and people are being paid to give negative narratives to games of the past. Some even attempt to change history by making up or adding details that aren't true. Lots of real life dark stuff going on currently.

DK3 was too underrated, but it might be because the Nintendo 64 was around the corner.

Donkey Kong games on the SNES were just the absolute best donkey Kong games. Dk64 was pretty good too but I don't know how or why it fell off?? I never played any of the Wii or further on DK games. I even watched the donkey Kong tv show as a kid.

I couldn't play Donkey Kong Country Returns on Wii 😬 I was fine with waggle in pretty much every other game but that one. I enjoyed it on 3DS though! Tropical Freeze on the other hand is a must play modern DK, I'd recommend it for sure! I've actually never played DK64 myself, besides an hour or so. I'll have to pick it up on Wii U Virtual Console--I've heard mixed things about it but that generally it's good?

@@ThaneGaming I have only the switch now, I'll have to give It a chance if you're saying it's good, I've seen tropical freeze but never went out of my way. I personally thought dk64 was quite good, though I did play it as a child, so perhaps I was quite forgiving of any flaws. I thought there was a lot to explore. I thought it was cool everyone had banana guns and could do different things and I found it to be really challenging. I hope you do give it a shot, perhaps give a review of it aswell!

Actually, both DKC2 _and_ DKC3 use their respective GAME OVER screens as anti-piracy measures. Strangely, though, not DKC1.

Best games ever made and I mean all 3 not just the first 2.. Returns and tropical freeze are great games to But they don't capture the magic the original 3 give

I agree with TGC, there was an essence in DKC3 that could've went into a scary science fiction direction. The more you go in, the more concerning things are. But since it's played like a Saturday morning cartoon and with the anticlimax that follows, it feels like the game just couldn't stick the landing.

I'd love to run through dkc3 2 players some time soon. That game is too good, and it has that happy Saturday morning feel like you say lol
